North Texas Football Highlights vs Rice October 31 2013
DENTON, TX - North Texas found out Thursday night just how difficult and demanding is the path to bowl eligibility. But the Mean Green repeatedly proved themselves up to the task with a gritty, extremely-hard earned 28-16 victory over Rice at Apogee Stadium to achieve bowl eligibility for the first time since 2004. The Mean Green, struggling to find its game on Halloween night, out-gained two to one and trailing 16-7, got a 42-yard touchdown run from Antoinne Jimmerson and a 65-yard punt return for a TD from Brelan Chancellor in a dramatic 1:35 span late in the second quarter to take the lead. But it was the defense that made it hold up with one of the most stirring goal-line stands in program history. After a tipped-pass interception, Rice drove to a first and goal at the NT one-yard line. The Mean Green stopped the Owls four times, only to see Rice get an extra set of downs, by way of penalty, at the two. But North Texas stone-walled the Owls four more times, smashing the Owls for an 11-yard loss on the final fourth-down play. The stand turned back eight plays inside the North Texas six-yard line, seven of them snapped inside the Mean Green three. "I was just blown away by that goal-line stand," said North Texas coach Dan McCarney, whose team is now 6-3 overall and 4-1 in Conference USA play after knocking off the C-USA West Division co-leaders. "It was really representative of this team's toughness, it's never-say-die attitude." "Everyone was just doing their job," said defensive back Kenny Buyers, who had a team-high 10 tackles. "It's just the best feeling." Rice's last hope was extinguished by an interception by Marcus Trice, his second of the game, late in the fourth quarter. "We're not in a bowl yet, we're just bowl eligible," McCarney added. "We've got a lot of work to do. But this is a major milestone. "That was a great example of character out there." North Texas opened the game on offense for the first time this year, but the experience didn't sit well. The Mean Green was unable to establish its run game, and the Rice secondary blanketed Chancellor while getting pressure on quarterback Derek Thompson, holding North Texas to just 130 yards total offense in the first half. The only North Texas score came on a fumble forced by Trice and returned 55 yards for a touchdown by Zach Orr. The Owls, however, started gaining chunks of yards in 75- and 88-yard scoring drives, both culminating in touchdowns for a 16-7 lead. That's when the game turned. North Texas got its first scoring drive of the night, kept alive by a third-down run by defensive tackle-turned-fullback Richard Abbe and capped by Jimmerson breaking through the right side of the line and hauling two tacklers the final five yards to the end zone. North Texas then forced a three-and-out from Rice, and Chancellor made the Owls pay for punting to him with the fourth kick-return touchdown of his career and second of the season. The Mean Green defense threw another second-half shutout, its third of the year, holding Rice (6-3, 4-1) to just 101 yards total offense in the second half. In addition to Buyers's 10 tackles, Orr, Trice and Will Wright had nine tackles each, and Aaron Bellazin, Brandon McCoy and Alexander Lincoln led a second-half pass rush that sacked Rice quarterback Taylor McHargue four times. North Texas vs. Middle Tennessee - October 12, 2013
DENTON, Texas - After playing from behind in the first five games this year, North Texas finally got off to a fast start Saturday against Middle Tennessee. The Mean Green found the experience very much to its liking. The North Texas running game, so silent through the past two games, roared to life for a season-high 303 yards. Running backs Brandin Byrd and Reggie Pegram both had career highs, with 139 and 88 yards, respectively, and Antoinne Jimmerson added a season-high 72 yards as the North Texas ground game dominated the Blue Raiders in a 34-7 victory at Apogee Stadium. "Just a bunch of young men that took it personally," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said of his offense's reaction to its recent struggles running the ball. "We know our foundation is built on running the football. We've been extremely disappointed in two of our losses. Running the ball was almost non-existent. They took it personal, every guy on offense." The Mean Green defense was just as dominant as the rushing attack, swarming MTSU all night and never allowing the Raiders to cross midfield in the second half. Coming off two straight losses and with two road games ahead, the dominant victory was huge for a Mean Green team now halfway to its goal of being bowl eligible for the first time since 2005. North Texas had chances to take control midway through the first half after putting together a 71-yard touchdown drive and getting a blocked field goal from linebacker Zach Orr. But James Jones's apparent touchdown return off the Orr block was wiped out by a penalty, and MTSU got a pair of interceptions on tipped balls to scuttle Mean Green drives and keep Blue Raiders in range of a tying score, which they got early in the second quarter. But the Mean Green did take control late in the second quarter. After North Texas got a one-yard scoring run from Byrd for a 14-7 lead, safety Lairamie Lee picked off an Austin Grammer pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown and a 21-7 advantage that MTSU could never challenge. 2014 Heart of Dallas Bowl CHAMPIONS - North Texas Mean Green
DALLAS - For the first time in eleven years and the first time on New Year's Day in program history, the North Texas football team is a bowl champion. In a game that epitomized the 2013-14 North Texas season, the Mean Green fell behind early but showed its boundless resiliency, methodically taking control of the game, battering the UNLV offense into submission, getting an efficient performance from senior quarterback Derek Thompson, and scoring a Heart of Dallas bowl-record 22 fourth-quarter points to roll to a 36-14 victory Wednesday afternoon at the Cotton Bowl. "Really proud of my football team," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "I dreamed of day these seniors could go to a bowl game and win a bowl game." Thompson completed 21-of-30 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns and no interceptions, and earned the game's Most Valuable Player award, while Brelan Chancellor scored two touchdowns on reverses, both in the fourth-quarter assault that sealed the win. "We knew if we picked up the tempo that we could do some things and move the football," Thompson said. "We just made plays. I wasn't anything special that we did. We just executed. The defense did the rest." There were a number of negative streaks facing the Mean Green coming into the game. North Texas had never won on New Year's Day (0-1), had never won at the Cotton Bowl (0-3) and had never beaten UNLV (0-4), and the Rebels had never lost a bowl game (3-0). But before a crowd of 38,380 - almost entirely outfitted in North Texas green - the Mean Green put all those streaks to rest. Early on, however, UNLV's read-option offense sorely tested the Mean Green defense. The Rebels came into the game averaging 31 points and 423 yards a game, and backed up those stats on their opening drive with a 95-yard scoring march for a 7-0 lead. But the North Texas defense adjusted quickly and reined in the Rebel attack. A pair of big losses - on a tackle by Will Wright and a sack by James Jones - marked the beginning of a relentless, merciless pounding of UNLV quarterback Caleb Herring. "I was tellling the guys to settle in," said senior linebacker Zach Orr, who led North Texas with nine sacks and had two and a half sacks. "It was the first time we had played a football game in over a month, and I felt like that first drive we were kind of playing on our heels and not playing our great defense. It just really did bounce back after that drive, and we pretty much shut them out the rest of the game." North Texas sacked Herring five times and hit him countless other times, forcing errant throws. North Texas also broke up six passes. After completing his first nine passes, Herring completed just six of his next 24 throws and was intercepted for just the fifth time this season when Kenny Buyers came up with his third interception. It took longer for the North Texas offense to get going, as the Mean Green struggled to find consistency in the first half. A 43-yard run by Brandin Byrd on the game-opening drive was called back by a penalty, and from that point on the offense sputtered, converting just one of six third downs in the first half. The Mean Green, however, got a break late in the opening period that got them even on the scoreboard. A punt to UNLV was jarred loose from Rebel return man Keith Whitely when one of his own blockers crashed into him as he was fielding the kick. Zed Evans recovered the fumble for North Texas at the UNLV 42. Wide receivers Chancellor and Carlos Harris then sparked the offense and moved the Mean Green to the UNLV three with three reverses, something North Texas practiced again and again in the lead-up to the game. Antoinne Jimmerson scored from a yard out to tie the game. With the game tied 7-7 at halftime, North Texas took complete control in the second half. UNLV had 192 yards of total offense in the first half, but just 20 in the third quarter and 50 in the fourth period, while the Mean Green offense found its legs. The Mean Green took the lead for the first time on its first drive of the second half, a march capped by a Thompson-to-Drew Miller seven-yard touchdown pass and a 14-7 lead. Chancellor, who had 181 all-purpose yards to shatter the North Texas career and single-season records, scored on a three-yard run, then Thompson dropped a perfect pass into Darnell Smith for a 34-yard score and a commanding 28-7 lead. Chancellor finished the North Texas scoring with another wide-receiver reverse, this one from 15 yards out. MeanGreenSports.com- published: 07 Jan 2014

Tulane Football highlights vs. North Texas, 10/5/13
Final Score, 24-21 The Green Wave scored touchdowns on a blocked field goal and an interception, and senior kicker Cairo Santos nailed a 27-yard field goal as time expired, as the Tulane University football team celebrated Homecoming 2013 in style with a 24-21 win over Conference USA newcomer North Texas on Saturday afternoon in the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Tulane entered the fourth quarter on top 21-7, but the Mean Green rallied to tie the game with a pair of touchdowns - including a 62-yard scoring strike from Derek Thompson to Darnell Smith with 3:45 left to play in regulation. After tallying just 76 yards in the second half going into what proved to be their final possession, the Green Wave offense got it together when it mattered most to churn out an 11-play, 66-yard drive to send the crowd home happy courtesy of Santos' right foot.- published: 06 Oct 2013

North Texas vs. UTEP - November 9, 2013
DENTON, TX - A dominant Mean Green defense registered a pair of blocked kicks, tied the school-record for quarterback sacks and allowed a season-low 184 yards total offense as North Texas extended its winning streak to five with a 41-7 homecoming victory over Texas-El Paso Saturday night. "We wanted to collapse the pocket," North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. "They had a new quarterback and he has talent. We wanted to keep him pinned in and keep him contained, try to heat him up. But it started with controlling the running game. They've been going for 200 yards. They didn't get near that today." The North Texas offense, meanwhile, continued to pick up the slack left by the loss of running back Reggie Pegram to season-ending injury two weeks ago. Against Rice, it was Antoinne Jimmerson going to 62 yards and two touchdowns. Saturday, it was senior Brandin Byrd turning in a career-best 202 yards and two touchdowns, including an 82-yard scoring run in the second half, as North Texas piled up 317 yards on the ground and 471 total yards for the game. "You love to see the consistency from Brandin Byrd," McCarney said. "He's one of the most unselfish guys we got. He's one of the toughest players, one of the most respected players we have in this program." The win keeps North Texas (7-3, 5-1) atop the Conference USA West-Division standings, half a game up on Rice. The Mean Green, by virtue of last week's 28-16 victory over Rice, holds the tie-breaker advantage over the Owls. The North Texas defense battered UTEP and its freshman quarterback, Mack Leftwich, who was sacked eight times, the most by the Mean Green since North Texas sacked Texas' Chris Simms eight times in 2002. Marcus Trice, Aaron Bellazin, Brandon McCoy, Richard Abbe and Zach Orr had sacks, and Orr had a game-high 12 tackles, moving him into sixth place on the North Texas all-time career tackles list. North Texas was up 7-0 when the Mean Green got its third punt block of the season. Redshirt freshman Rex Rollins blocked a UTEP kick and freshman Darvin Kidsy recovered for touchdown and a 14-0 lead. UTEP never threatened the rest of the way, held to 56 yards rushing (1.3 yards per rush) and 184 yards of total offense. MeanGreenSports.com- published: 10 Nov 2013
