Australia Sees Possible Malaysia Plane Debris - Satellite Imagery Identifies 2 Objects - 20 Mar 2014

Two objects have been seen that could possibly relate to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, Australian PM Tony Abbott has announced.

Australian vessels have been searching in the southern Indian Ocean for the aircraft, which disappeared on 8 March with 239 people on board.

Mr Abbott said the objects had been identified on satellite imagery.

An Orion aircraft had been sent to the area to try to locate the objects, Mr Abbott told parliament.

Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 was flying from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing when it lost contact with air traffic controllers.

Twenty-six nations have been involved in a major search for the missing aircraft.

Obama Russia Sanctions Ukraine Sanctions over Crimea Vote Obama Russia - Obama Russia Sanctions - Russia Crimea - President Barack Obama - Obama - Ukraine -Obama Ukraine - Russia Crimea, Politics News Obama Delivers Statement Russia Ukraine Sanctions over Crimea Vote Obama Delivers Statement Russia Ukraine Sanctions regarding Crimea The United States and European Union announced sanctions including asset freezes and travel bans on officials from Russia and Ukraine after Crimea applied to join Russia on Monday following a controversial weekend referendum.

Crimea\'s Moscow-backed leaders declared an overwhelming 96.7% vote in favor of leaving Ukraine and being annexed by Russia in a vote that Western powers said was illegal. Turnout was 83%.

The result did not come as a surprise. But what happens next is far from certain. Diplomatically, Sunday\'s referendum has put the United States and Russia on the kind of collision course not seen since the Cold War. Economically, it\'s unclear how much such a coupling will cost Russia. And politically, it\'s divided Crimeans, some of whom think it will bring better pay and some who see this as a Kremlin land grab.

On 11 October 2013 Human Rights Observers from EAPPI attended an incident in Tel Rumeida, Hebron where Israeli settlers were blocking the entrance/ exit to the home of a Palestinian family. This clip shows some of the ways the settler children behave. The internationals are standing by the fence with the Palestinians in the Palestinians\' garden. In a few years it is likely that these children will be roaming the streets with real guns rather than plastic ones. Shortly after this film was taken, a settler child threw a bucket of bleach over the internationals and directly into one woman\'s eyes. She had to be treated in hospital. The nine watching Israeli soldiers refused to intervene and the Israeli police were called twice but did not attend.

Australia Sees Possible Malaysia Plane Debris - Satellite Imagery Identifies 2 Objects - 20 Mar 2014 Two objects have been seen that could possibly relate to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, Australian PM Tony Abbott has announced. "The Australian Maritime Safety Authority has received information based on satellite information of objects possibly related to the search," Mr Abbott said. "Following specialist analysis of this satellite imagery, two possible objects related to the search have been identified." Mt Abbott warned, however, that finding the objects would be very difficult and said they could turn out to be unrelated to the aircraft. A number of sightings of possible debris have been investigated in the search for the plane but so far none have proved to be related. Earlier this week, Australia was asked by Malaysia to take responsibility for the "southern corridor" search. Investigators had identified two arcs of territory - one to the north and one to the south - spanning the possible positions of the plane about seven hours after take-off. This was based on its last faint signal to a satellite - an hourly "handshake'' broadcast even when the main communication systems are switched off. Obama Russia Sanctions Speech over Ukraine Crimea Vote
Obama Russia Sanctions Speech over Ukraine Crimea Vote
  • Order:
  • Duration: 1:57
  • Updated: 17 Mar 2014
Obama Russia Sanctions Ukraine Sanctions over Crimea Vote Obama Russia - Obama Russia Sanctions - Russia Crimea - President Barack Obama - Obama - Ukraine -Obama Ukraine - Russia Crimea, Politics News Obama Delivers Statement Russia Ukraine Sanctions over Crimea Vote Obama Delivers Statement Russia Ukraine Sanctions regarding Crimea The United States and European Union announced sanctions including asset freezes and travel bans on officials from Russia and Ukraine after Crimea applied to join Russia on Monday following a controversial weekend referendum. Crimea's Moscow-backed leaders declared an overwhelming 96.7% vote in favor of leaving Ukraine and being annexed by Russia in a vote that Western powers said was illegal. Turnout was 83%. The result did not come as a surprise. But what happens next is far from certain. Diplomatically, Sunday's referendum has put the United States and Russia on the kind of collision course not seen since the Cold War. Economically, it's unclear how much such a coupling will cost Russia. And politically, it's divided Crimeans, some of whom think it will bring better pay and some who see this as a Kremlin land grab. Mixed feelings after Crimean referendum "(Foreign Affairs Council) just agreed on sanctions -- travel restrictions & assets freeze against 21 official from Ukraine & Russia," Linan Linkevicius wrote in a message on Twitter. He said more measures would follow in a few days, when EU leaders meet for a summit in Brussels. German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said those targeted included eight top Crimean officials and 10 people from Russia, including members of parliament, as well as three military personnel. Washington said it had targeted Russian officials and lawmakers, as well as Crimea-based separatist leaders, with financial sanctions for undermining "democratic processes and institutions in Ukraine." President Barack Obama's order freezes any assets in the United States and bans travel for the 11 people named. Among those sanctioned were ousted Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and aides to Russian President Vladimir Putin. Obama will deliver a statement on Ukraine at 10:45 a.m. ET Monday in Washington, the White House said. Earlier, lawmakers in Crimea approved a resolution that declared the Black Sea peninsula an independent, sovereign state. They then filed an appeal to join the Russian Federation. Moscow strongly backed Sunday's referendum; the majority of the population is ethnic Russian. And Russian lawmakers have said they will welcome Crimea with open arms. What comes next On Monday, Russia proposed creating an international support group to mediate in the Ukraine crisis. Its Foreign Ministry said in a statement that this group would urge Ukraine to implement portions of a February 21 peace deal and formulate a new constitution that would include Russian as an official language alongside Ukrainian, as well as set out broad powers for the country's regions. Crimea is home to 2 million people. Members of the ethnic Ukrainian and Muslim Tatar minorities had said they would boycott the election, held just three weeks after pro-Russian forces took control of the peninsula. Uncertainties stemming from a possible break from Ukraine have fueled rumors about a looming legal vacuum in the crisis-hit region, causing panic and confusion. On Monday, Crimean lawmakers approved legislation to make the Russian ruble the official currency in Crimea alongside the Ukrainian hryvnia, according to a statement posted on the Crimean Parliament's website. The hryvnia remains an official currency until January 1, 2016. The statement did not provide a date for when the ruble would be circulated in the region. The lawmakers also adopted a resolution stating that on March 30, Crimea will move to Moscow Standard Time. A special tax system may be introduced for Crimea, Russia's state-run ITAR-Tass news agency reported Monday, citing Russian Finance Minister Sergei Shatalov.Crimea (Administrative Division),Russia--Ukraine Relations,Ukraine (Country),Russia (Country),Soviet Union (Country),Moscow,Conference Crimea (Administrative Division),Russia--Ukraine Relations,Ukraine (Country),Russia (Country),Soviet Union (Country),Moscow,Conference

Illegal Migrants in Italian Poverty Trap
Illegal Migrants in Italian Poverty Trap

After crossing half of Africa and surviving a perilous journey across the Mediterranean in search of a better life, Boubacar Bailo is now contemplating suicide. The young African is one of a growing army of illegal immigrants hired to harvest tomatoes in the Puglia region of southern Italy. Home is a squalid makeshift slum known as 'the Ghetto'. [Boubacar Bailo, African Immigrant]: "Here is where I sleep, ten people sleep here." This is the harsh reality many illegal immigrants face in Italy. In their quest to escape persecution, poverty and conflict these men sprung a new economic trap - and one from which most will not escape. [Burkina Faso Immigrant]: "We just didn't know Italy was like this, we always thought it was a country I would find a job and do everything like eating and a lot of nice things, but now we've seen that it's not like that, but I can't go back." Every year thousands of immigrants flock to the plantations of southern Italy to eke out a living as seasonal workers, picking anything from grapes to olives, tomatoes and oranges. Paid a fraction of what Italian laborers would earn, cheap migrant labor plays an important role in the Italian economy. But rights campaigners and charities say the exploitation of illegal workers, toiling from dawn 'till dusk, is akin to slavery. Dr Alvise Benelli of the medical charity, Medecins Sans Frontieres (MSF), describes conditions in the 'ghetto' as intolerable. Alvise Benelli, Doctors Without Borders]: "They sleep on the ground on mattresses they have picked up on the streets, most of them are rotten and infested with insects." To eat, the migrants club together to buy a sheep or goat so they can slaughter it themselves and feed more people. In a week or so, these men will head south to the Calabria region for the orange harvest. They dreamt of El Dorado only to end up in hell.

Australia Sees Possible Malaysia Plane Debris - Satellite Imagery Identifies 2 Objects - 20 Mar 2014 Two objects have been seen that could possibly relate to the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, Australian PM Tony Abbott has announced. Russia's advances in Ukraine are the greatest threat to European security since the Cold War, says Nato's chief, making clear that the military alliance must refocus on risks closer to home after years of fighting in faraway war zones. "This is a wake-up call," Nato Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen told a Washington think tank. He lambasted Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's strategic Crimean Peninsula as illegal and illegitimate, and repeated Nato's decision to suspend a joint maritime escort with Russia for the destruction of Syria's chemical weapons. Mr Rasmussen outlined military measures under preparation for Nato countries to respond to Russia, if needed. They include surveillance flights over Poland and Romania, and additional assets for an airspace protection mission over Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. "This is the gravest threat to European security and stability since the end of the Cold War," Mr Rasmussen said in a speech at the Brookings Institution. Developments in Ukraine, he said, "are a stark reminder that security in Europe cannot be taken for granted. ... We need to take tough decisions in view of the long-term strategic impact of Russia's aggression on our own security."
