Blame game backfire: US State Dept's Psaki in Simferopol bullet dodge
Two people - a self-defense member and a Ukrainian soldier - were killed at a Ukrainian military map center Tuesday. Witnesses claim shots came from a possible sniper who opened fire from a partially inhabited building. Nevertheless US State Dept spokesperson Jen Psaki tweeted that Russia was responsible and 'shot first'. RT's Anastasia Churkina asks Ms Psaki to clarify her allegations at US Press Briefing. Two servicemen killed in Simferopol shoot out
Shots were fired at a military base in Simferopol, Crimea, the first such instance of violence on the Crimean Peninsula since the beginning of the crisis. A Ukrainian serviceman and a member of the Crimean self-defense forces were reportedly killed by the shots from a still-unidentified source. Quick to condemn the violence, Ukraine's interim Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk has called the shootings a "war crime." RT's Alexey Yaroshevsky has the latest from Simferopol. Ukraine: Emotions run high in Crimea's Simferopol
Crimea has become the focus in a crisis which has wide-ranging implications. For many Russians, Crimea has a strong emotional resonance. For Ukraine, its loss would be an enormous blow. In Simferopol, where armed men are stationed in the streets, feelings run deep. "For me, it's most important to keep peace here. There is no difference -- in Russia or in Ukraine. The most important thing is that they don't put pressure on us," says Yuriy. "Some politicians say that the Russian language is no... Ukraine: Simferopol celebrates referendum results
Around 15,000 people gathered in central Lenin square in Simferopol on Sunday evening to celebrate the announcement of interim referendum results. Demonstrators, waving Russian and Crimean flags and scanning "Russia!" were watching a live concert while waiting for the announcement of preliminary results of the voting. With more than half of ballots counted, greater than 95 percent of voters in the Crimean referendum have answered 'yes' to the autonomous republic joining Russia and less than five percent of the vote participants want the region to remain part of Ukraine, according to preliminary results. Russia: Simferopol sniper still at large - Crimean prosecutor Natalia Poklonskaya
Crimean authorities confirmed in a Simferopol press conference Wednesday that investigations are ongoing regarding a fatal shooting which killed two and wounded two others in Simferopol on Tuesday. Crimean Prosecutor Natalia Poklonskaya denied reports that authorities had detained the killer, and confirmed that they are still reviewing suspects. A Ukrainian military serviceman as well as a member of a pro-Russian self-defence militia were killed, and a Ukrainian military serviceman and a pro-Russian self-defence member were both injured near a Ukrainian military facility, after shots were fired from a nearby building. Poklonskaya said that the shooting had a "high degree of similarity" to sniper attacks on Maidan Square in Kiev in February, and that the goal of the attack in Simferopol was to "provoke violence between the military forces of Ukraine and the Crimean Republic." Захват автосалона в Симферополе вооруженными людьми capture dealership armed men in Simferopol

Russia: Simferopol citizens watch Putin's speech live in city cafes
People gathered at Enot cafe located close to Lenina street in the centre of Simferopol on Tuesday, to watch Russian president Vladimir Putin addressing the Federal Assembly after signing a treaty of accession for Crimea to be part of Russia. The big screen used on the square during the celebrations following the referendum on Sunday was later dismantled, so locals had to search for another option to watch the transmission of the event. Management of the cafe provided a big screen for the visitors to let them know first what Putin announced. Ukraine: Simferopol stocks up on flowers, not guns
The streets of the Crimean city of Simferopol were decidedly colourful Friday, as men lined up at shops to buy flowers for their female co-workers a day before International Women's Day. An underground foot passage near the city centre was filled with men purchasing bouquets from dozens of flower vendors. Despite the rainy weather, others bought and sold flowers in the streets close to Lenin Square. International Women's Day is celebrated March 8 each year and is an official holiday in Ukraine and Russia. Its origins lay in the struggle for women's equality in the early twentieth century, though it is celebrated by many as a non-political holiday akin to Mother's Day or Valentine's Day. Ukraine: First people arrive to cast their vote for referendum in Simferopol
The first polling stations opened in Simferopol Sunday for the referendum in which Crimean citizens will decide whether they will join the Russian Federation or remain part of Ukraine. According to Crimean authorities, there are 135 registered international observers and over 1200 local observers monitoring the voting at ballot stations. Every voter coming to the station is checked for marks on their hands to prevent a person from casting their vote more than once. Polling stations opened at 8 a.m. local time (0600 UTC) and will close 12 hours later.
