George McCorkle (October 11, 1947 – June 29, 2007) was a founding member and guitarist for the Marshall Tucker Band. He wrote "Fire on the Mountain", the band's first top 40 hit, though had hoped that Charlie Daniels would record the song. He left the band in 1984 and later worked as a songwriter.^[1] He released a solo album, American Street, in 1999.^[2] McCorkle was diagnosed with cancer in early June 2007 and died soon afterward, in Lebanon, Tennessee.^[1]

Early career[link]

George McCorkle pursued music as a career after having been drafted into the Navy and serving from 1967 to 1968. Initially he had taught himself to play his older brother's guitar as a young teenager, mimicking the blues stylings of B.B. King and other artists he heard on the radio. At the age of sixteen he purchased his own Gretsch guitar. His first stage performances were with local high school bands in Spartanburg, South Carolina.

After his military discharge he formed a band, The Toy Factory, with his longtime childhood friend, Toy Caldwell. George also performed with another group, Pax Parachute, but his musical talents flourished working with Toy. ""Playing guitar with Toy Caldwell wasn't just playing guitar, it was sharing a mind. With me at his side he had the freedom to do whatever came into his mind and I could instinctively interpret whatever that was and experiment with him. And Toy had a heart of gold." ^[3]

The Marshall Tucker Band is an American Southern rock band originally from Spartanburg, South Carolina. The band's blend of rock, rhythm and blues, jazz, country, and gospel^[1] helped establish the Southern rock genre in the early 1970s.^[2] While the band had reached the height of its commercial success by the end of the decade, the band has recorded and performed continuously under various lineups for nearly 40 years.^[2]

The original lineup of the Marshall Tucker Band, formed in 1972, included lead guitarist, vocalist, and primary songwriter Toy Caldwell (1947–1993), vocalist Doug Gray (b. 1948), keyboard player and flutist Jerry Eubanks (b. 1950), rhythm guitarist George McCorkle (1946–2007), drummer Paul Riddle (b. 1953), and bassist Tommy Caldwell (1949–1980). They signed with Capricorn Records and in 1973 released their first LP, The Marshall Tucker Band. After Tommy Caldwell was killed in an automobile accident in 1980, he was replaced by bassist Franklin Wilkie. Most of the original band members had left by the mid-1980s to pursue other projects.^[3] The band's lineup as of 2009 consists of Gray on vocals, guitarist Stuart Swanlund, keyboard player and flutist Marcus James Henderson, guitarist Rick Willis, bassist Pat Elwood, and drummer B.B. Borden.^[4]

Name origin[link]

The "Marshall Tucker" in the band's name does not refer to a band member, but rather a Spartanburg-area piano tuner. While the band was discussing possible band names one evening in an old warehouse they had rented for rehearsal space, someone noticed that the warehouse's door key had the name "Marshall Tucker" inscribed on it, and suggested they called themselves the "The Marshall Tucker Band," not realizing it referred to an actual person. It later came to light that Marshall Tucker, the blind piano tuner, had rented the space before the band, and the landlord had yet to change the inscription on the key.^[1]

In his book, Top Pop Singles, 1955-2002, music historian Joel Whitburn attributes "Marshall Tucker" to the owner of the band's rehearsal hall.^[5]

Early history[link]

The original members (and some later members) of the Marshall Tucker Band had been playing in various lineups under different band names around the Spartanburg area since the early 1960s. In 1966, members of several such bands merged to form the Toy Factory, named after guitarist Toy Caldwell. The Toy Factory's constantly-shifting lineup included, at times, Caldwell, Caldwell's younger brother Tommy, Doug Gray, Jerry Eubanks, George McCorkle, and Franklin Wilkie. In the late 1960s, bandmembers served in the U.S. Armed Forces, and saw action in the Vietnam War. By the 1970s, Toy Caldwell and George McCorkle had returned to Spartanburg, and the Toy Factory had resumed playing in area clubs.^[6] In fact, in 1970 the Toy Factory was the opening act for the Allman Brothers when the Allman's played at the "Sitar" music lounge in Spartanburg.

In 1972, Caldwell and McCorkle once again revamped the band's lineup, eventually settling on Tommy Caldwell on bass, George McCorkle rhythm guitar, and Jerry Eubanks, flute/tenor sax, while adding Paul Riddle on drums; the new lineup adopted the name "Marshall Tucker Band." Wet Willie lead singer Jimmy Hall told Toy Caldwell to book the band at Grant's Lounge in Macon which he did. After hearing the band play at Grant's Buddy Thornton and Paul Hornsby recorded the band's demo at the Capricorn Studio in Macon, Ga. Frank Fenter and Phil Walden signed The Marshall Tucker Band based on those demos.

1970s[link]

The Marshall Tucker Band's self-titled debut, produced by Paul Hornsby, was released in 1973, and certified gold in 1975.^[7] All of the tracks were written by Toy Caldwell, including "Can't You See", which was released in 1973 on Capricorn 0023 ("Bubbled Under" at #108 on 1 September 1973) and re-released in 1977 on Capricorn 0278 (peaked at #75 on 24 September 1977). After the album's release, the band began touring, playing upwards of 300 shows per year throughout the decade.^[7] Southern rock fiddler Charlie Daniels later recalled that the Marshall Tucker Band "came onstage and just blew it out from start to finish."^[8]

Daniels' first of many collaborations with the Marshall Tucker Band came on the band's second album, A New Life,^[8] which was released in 1974, and certified gold in 1977.^[7] Daniels and blues guitarist Elvin Bishop were among several musicians that joined the band for Where We All Belong,^[8] a double-album (one studio album and one live album) released by the band in 1974 and certified gold that same year. The following year the band's Searchin' for a Rainbow was also certified gold the year of its release, and contained the track "Fire on the Mountain," which peaked at #38 on the Billboard charts. Long Hard Ride, the band's fifth consecutive gold album, was released in 1976,^[8] and its instrumental title track (which again features Charlie Daniels on fiddle) was nominated for a Grammy.^[9] Carolina Dreams, released in 1977 and certified platinum that same year, proved to be the band's most commercially-successful album, and included the track "Heard It In a Love Song," which reached #14 on the Billboard charts.^[7] The band's final Capricorn release came with 1978's Together Forever, which was produced by Stewart Levine.^[8]

1980s[link]

The Marshall Tucker Band moved to Warner Bros. Records for their ninth album, Running Like the Wind, although they retained Levine as the album's producer. On April 22, 1980, the band's bassist, Tommy Caldwell, was involved in an automobile accident in which he suffered massive head trauma, and died six days later. Former Toy Factory bassist Franklin Wilkie replaced Caldwell, but the band was never able to recapture its commercial success of the 1970s. After 1983's Greetings from South Carolina, the band split up.^[2]

In 1988, Gray and Eubanks reorganized the Marshall Tucker Band to record the album Still Holdin' On, their one and only release on the Mercury Records label. Although Gray and Eubanks added new members Rusty Milner, Stuart Swanlund, and Tim Lawter, Still Holdin' On was primarily recorded with studio musicians. The newer members had a much greater role, however, on the band's 1990 album, Southern Spirit, released on the Sisaspa label. The album marked a return to the band's country and blues roots.^[10]

1990s[link]

In 1992, the Marshall Tucker Band produced its first album for the Cabin Fever label, Still Smokin', which managed to crack the top 70 on the Billboard charts. The band's 1993 release, Walk Outside the Lines, marked a transition to a more country sound, relying less on long improvised jams that were the trademark of the band's early career.^[11] The album's title track was co-written by country music star Garth Brooks, a long-time fan of the band who considered writing a track for them a "milestone" in his career.^[7]

For 1998's Face Down In the Blues, the band added Spartanburg-area guitarist Ronald Radford and multi-instrumentalist David Muse, the latter replacing Jerry Eubanks, who had retired in 1996.^[8] Gospel, the band's 1999 album, featured the band's rendition of traditional songs such as The Wayfaring Stranger and Will the Circle Be Unbroken, as well as several original tracks.

Recent history[link]

The Marshall Tucker Band continued recording and performing into the 21st century, playing between 150 and 200 shows per year.^[1] The band reissued many of its albums from the 1970s on its new Ramblin' Records label, as well as two two-disc compilations, the first (Anthology) being a 30-year retrospective and the second (Where a Country Boy Belongs) being a collection of the band's country songs. In 2004, they released another studio album, Beyond the Horizon, and the following year released a Christmas album, Carolina Christmas.

"Can't You See" was used for the opening and closing credits of the Kevin Costner 2008 motion picture Swing Vote. "Take the Highway" was also used in the movie.

Toy Talmadge Caldwell Jr. (November 13, 1947 - February 25, 1993) was the lead guitar player, main songwriter and a founding member of the 1970s Southern Rock group The Marshall Tucker Band.^[1] He was a member of the band from 1973 to 1983.

Early life[link]

Caldwell was born November 13, 1947 in Spartanburg, South Carolina, to Mr. and Mrs. Toy Talmadge Caldwell Sr. He began playing guitar before his teen years with his younger brother Tommy Caldwell. Toy played basketball and football in high school with friends George McCorkle, Jerry Eubanks, and Doug Gray. While very involved in sports, the boys eventually became interested in music including jazz and blues. By age sixteen, Toy was passionate about music, sports, and his other obsession, motorcycles. He also enjoyed hunting and fishing. Caldwell decided to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. In 1966, Toy was in Parris Island, and was wounded September 1968, he was evacuated for 2 weeks, then sent back to the front lines. Caldwell was discharged in 1969 and once again began playing music with his high school buddies. The Spartanburg chapter of the Marine Corps League is named the Hutchings-Caldwells Detachment in honor of Toy, his brother Tommy and another Marine.^[2]

He later formed the Toy Caldwell Band and released an eponymous CD in 1992; the record was later renamed Son of the South by Southern rocker and Caldwell's personal friend, Charlie Daniels. The album was digitally re-released in 2009 through Hopesong Digital / GMV Nashville. As guitarist for Marshall Tucker, Caldwell wrote almost all of their songs.

Caldwell died on February 25, 1993, at his home in Moore, South Carolina.^[1] The cause of death was reported as respiratory failure.^[3][4]

Caldwell married his wife Abbie on September 12, 1969. They remained married until his death.

Jesse Willard "Pete" Carr (born April 22, 1950) is an American guitarist. Carr has contributed to hit recordings by Joan Baez, Luther Ingram, Bob Seger, Joe Cocker, Boz Scaggs, Paul Simon, The Staple Singers, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Wilson Pickett, Hank Williams, Jr., and many more over the past four decades. He has also recorded and produced four solo albums and was half of the duet LeBlanc and Carr. Carr has recorded extensively at FAME Recording Studio and Muscle Shoals Sound Studio in Muscle Shoals, Alabama. He was lead guitarist for the famed Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section. Carr is known for versatility, using both electric and acoustic guitars to perform a vast array of musical styles including folk, rock, pop, country, blues and soul.

In addition, Carr has added depth to his understanding of the recording studio environment by engineering and producing numerous albums over the years which has led to several Grammy nominations. In 1974, Paul Simon's "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" album was nominated for two Grammy awards; and "Against the Wind" by Bob Seger earned two Grammy awards in 1981.^[1] In addition, Carr co-produced Bob Seger's "Stranger in Town" album which featured the iconic hit "Old Time Rock and Roll".

Early years[link]

Carr was born in Daytona Beach, Florida and started to play the guitar at age 13. The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were major influences on his early interest in music. Carr later became interested in guitar instrumentals such as "Walk Don't Run 64" by The Ventures, which he learned note for note by listening to the record. Around this time a guitar player from Memphis, Travis Wammack, released an instrumental guitar record named "Scratchy". The other side of the record was named "Fire Fly". When Carr heard "Scratchy" on the radio he was so impressed he immediately went out and bought the record. Carr also learned from listening to guitarist such as James Burton, Jeff Beck, Eric Clapton, Duane Allman, Ted Connors and Chet Atkins.

At the age of 15, Carr went to see the Allman Joys play at the Club Martinique in Daytona Beach. Carr, with guitar case in hand, introduced himself when the band took a break and asked Gregg Allman to show him some guitar lines. Gregg replied, "That's my brother, Duane's, department." At that point Carr introduced himself to Duane Allman. That meeting began a friendship which lasted until Allman's tragic death in a motorcycle crash October 29, 1971.^[2]

In 1967 Carr, Gregg Allman, Duane Allman, Paul Hornsby and Johnny Sandlin, in a group named The Hour Glass, played together on the "The Power Of Love" album. The Hour Glass had recorded songs in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, at Rick Hall's FAME Studios which was known for innovative productions and great sound.^[3] One song recording at FAME, "Sweet Little Angel", was later released in a Duane Allman Anthology set. This recording is now considered a classic piece of raw electric southern rock blues.

Sessions Work[link]

Carr found that he preferred sessions work in recording studios along with the engineering and producing aspects of making music. He moved to Muscle Shoals, Alabama around the age of 20 to pursue a studio career. Johnny Wyker and Court Pickett would soon start work on their "Motorcycle Mama" album under the artist name of "Sailcat". Carr contributed as musician, engineer and producer on the project. The album was a commercial success for the new Muscle Shoals producer. After this Carr moved into the lead guitarist seat for the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section.

The 1970s were among the most productive of the Muscle Shoals Rhythm Section as the cream of rock, pop and soul found their way to 3614 Jackson Highway in Sheffield, AL. Carr played on almost all sessions recorded at the studio for the next 10 years. A good example of Carr's musical ability and taste is the standout guitar lines he played on the Bob Seger hit "Main Street". The Rhythm Section (including Carr) co-produced Paul Simon's "There Goes Rhymin' Simon" which earned them a Grammy nomination in 1974.

Carr continued as the premier session guitarist in the Muscle Shoals area playing on projects for artists recording at the main studios and also produced two guitar instrumental albums himself. This strengthened Carr's reputation as one of the South's best studio session guitarists, as well as an artist in his own right. Jerry Wexler, a world renowned record executive and producer, helped Carr find a record label for his productions. Carr put together the group with Lenny LeBlanc, LeBlanc & Carr, and created the album "Midnight Light" as both artist and producer. The song "Falling" became a big hit for LeBlanc & Carr. "Falling" was mixed at FAME Studios which is where Carr did most of the mixing for his production projects. The group's first tour was with Lynyrd Skynyrd on the "Street Survivors Tour" and ended tragically with an airplane crash in Mississippi, October 20, 1977. After this tragedy, and other band problems, Carr decided to return to the studio.

Pete Carr had distinguished himself as the only studio musician in the Muscle Shoals area to succeed as studio musician, artist, composer, engineer and producer.^[2] Tom Dowd called Carr to Los Angeles to play on a Rod Stewart album which produced the big hit "Tonight's The Night". Carr's guitar playing was a prominent part of the hit. He layered rhythm and lead guitars throughout the song.^[4] In 1981 Carr was chosen to play for the Simon and Garfunkel Reunion World Tour and the legendary HBO Central Park Concert on September 19, 1981 where he played acoustic and electric guitars. Over half a million people were in attendance for the concert.

Rolling Stone magazine gave Carr a rave review for his bluesy and tasty electric guitar solo on the Barbra Streisand song "Make it Like a Memory" from her Grammy award winning "Guilty" album.^[5] "Guilty" was Streisand's biggest selling album in her recording history. On the song "Woman in Love" from the same album, Carr's opening harmony guitar lines were notably unique and hard to categorize but very effective in introducing this Streisand hit.

Pete Carr's contribution to American music continues to be heard daily around the globe. Songs featuring Carr's lead guitar such as Bob Seger's "Mainstreet" and Paul Simon's "Kodachrome" are standards. During the Falklands War of 1982, as British battle ships set sail to reclaim the Islands the BBC (The British Broadcasting Corporation) played the Rod Stewart song "Sailing" nation wide. "Sailing" featured Carr's acoustic and electric guitar playing.

Candy Coburn is an American national performing country music artist who has shared the stage with many notable artists, including Brooks and Dunn, Kellie Pickler, Montgomery Gentry, Blake Shelton, Miranda Lambert, Gary Allan, Josh Turner, Lady Antebellum and others. Scheduled to release her third album in 2010, Candy's most notable contribution to music so far has been her song, "Pink Warrior."

Pink Warrior[link]

"Pink Warrior" was co-written by Candy Coburn, whose grandmother fought breast cancer for 10 years, along with respected Nashville writers Kaci Bolls, Candy Cameron and Roxie Dean. It was produced by Nashville producer, Joe Scaife, who is also known for his work with Montgomery Gentry and Gretchen Wilson. With her grandmother's long battle with cancer in mind, Coburn hoped the song would someday be an inspiration to others who have been touched by cancer. She was surprised when she was contacted by the well-known Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization only one month after Pink Warrior was recorded.^[1] In an agreement with Susan G. Komen for the Cure, 100% of the artist and producer proceeds from sales of the song are donated to Komen, and Candy Coburn became a celebrity ambassador for Susan G. Komen for the Cure, using her extensive tour schedule averaging over 150 dates per year as a platform to help increase awareness about the fight against breast cancer. The song got its official debut when Candy performed Pink Warrior during the parade of more than 3,600 breast cancer survivors representing 18 countries at the first annual Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure in Washington, D.C. on The National Mall on June 6, 2009.^[2]

Following the Global Race, Candy went on to perform in many venues throughout the country, including numerous major state fairs, college events, NASCAR,^[3] and other Komen related events. After a September 4, 2009 performance of "Pink Warrior" at the New York State Fair, Mark Bialczak of The Post-Standard wrote: "It was soaring song about women who fight the disease every day. And it wasn't just the folks in the "Pink Warrior" section who cheered Coburn for it." ^[4]

In 2010 "Pink Warrior" is being used as the theme song for the Susan G. Komen 3-Day for the Cure events.^[5] In addition to her own full tour schedule for 2010,^[6] Candy is scheduled to perform for all of the 3-Day events in 15 major U.S. cities.^[7]

Candy Coburn was born in Kentucky and raised in Missouri and Texas. Her love for music came from her grandmother, who listened to gospel music along with Glenn Miller, Loretta Lynn and George Jones. Candy knew from her very earliest memories she was meant for a career in music entertainment, and began to dedicate herself to learning everything she needed to become a successful performer.^[8]

She went to the University of Missouri on a vocal scholarship and completed a degree in Theatre. Although her performances in the University musicals were very popular with audiences, Candy was drawn more toward a career as a musician.^[9]

After college, Candy began learning to write her own songs and later got the first of a series of green guitars which quickly became known as her signature green guitar. When the guitar was irreparably damaged in a car accident on the way to the Season 3 Regional competition of Nashville Star,^[10] the Alvarez Guitar company found out about the accident and provided her with several green guitars during a two year endorsement deal. In 2008, the Carvin Corporation picked up where Alvarez left off and continued to provide Candy with her signature green guitars.^[11]

Candy's first album, Enjoy the Ride, was followed by her second, Rev It Up, which came out in 2007. Coburn focused on including songs with a Southern Rock style on her album and in shows. While writing and searching for music to put on the Rev It Up album, Candy's friend and mentor, George McCorkle of the original Marshall Tucker Band offered to let her choose one of his songs to include on her second album and agreed to accompany her. Candy chose "Fire On the Mountain." McCorkle appeared several times on stage with Coburn after the album release to sing the song with her. McCorkle's final show of support came when he made the trip from his home in Tennessee to appear on a live Missouri CW 11 television special, "Live at the Gillioz with Candy Coburn." McCorkle sang several songs with Coburn, including "Fire On the Mountain," and ended what was to be his final performance with the Marshall Tucker Band song, "Can't You See," before leaving the stage. One week later, doctors discovered McCorkle had stage 4 cancer. Two weeks after his final show with Coburn, George McCorkle died.^[12] McCorkle's friends put together a music video using the Coburn-McCorkle version of "Fire On the Mountain" from the "Rev It Up" album to honor his memory.^[13]

Three singles from the "Rev It Up" album were released in Southwestern United States: "Hard to be Good in Texas," "Rev It Up," and "Big Dream in a Little Town." All three singles did well on the nationally recognized Texas country music chart,^[14] attaining #8, #10 and #26, respectively.^[15]

In 2007, Coburn became one of the first female artists to be sponsored by Anheuser-Busch as a Budweiser Concert Series Artist. In 2008 she was presented with a custom designed Budweiser Taylor Guitar in her signature green color.^[16] Candy entered her 5th year of Budweiser sponsorship in 2012.^[17]

In 2010 Atlanta, Georgia Planet Smoothie became a tour sponsor for Candy Coburn with the introduction of the Pink Warrior smoothie, "Pink Promise," in a campaign entitled, "It's All About the PINK!" ^[18]

A Texas Roadhouse partnership began in 2011 when the legendary steakhouse restaurants began playing Coburn's songs on the website and on their store jukeboxes across the country, beginning with "Pink Warrior" and "Wrecking Ball." A third song, "Do You Want It," was written and produced by Marc Eric and sung by Candy Coburn for Texas Roadhouse. It was released briefly to radio stations and offered as a free download through Texas Roadhouse. The song continues to be played on store jukeboxes.

January 2, 2012 marked the release of a brand new radio version of her single, “Don’t Walk Away.” Written by Candy along with her guitarist Josh Carroll and friend Josh Long, “Don’t Walk Away” was chosen for radio release due to its popularity with audiences across the country since it was introduced to the set list of her live show.

Candy has been featured in many publications, including IndyCar professional race car driver Sarah Fisher's book released in May 2010 by Beaufort Books, 99 Things Women Wish They knew Before Getting Behind The Wheel of Their Dream Job,.^[19] and she has also been featured on the cover of magazines such as LO Profile Magazine, Erie Life Magazine, and 417 Magazine.

Candy Coburn has been personally managed by the Chief Executive Officer of Triangle Talent Inc., David Snowden,^[20] since late 2007. She has been represented by Creative Artists Agency (CAA)^[21] since early 2008.^[22]

Candy has taken her tour to stages of all sizes from coast to coast and has shared the stage with many highly recognized artists, including Montgomery Gentry, Blake Shelton, Brooks & Dunn, Josh Turner, Little Big Town, Lady Antebellum, Charlie Daniels Band, Miranda Lambert, Gary Allen, Zac Brown Band, Darius Rucker and Bret Michaels. Coburn has performed in front of more than 40,000 people at the Susan G. Komen Global Race for the Cure on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. in 2009 and 2010. She has also performed for close to 45,000 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway in 2011, and 110,000 at Churchill Downs.
