Jamie's Great Adventure: Northern Water snake (aka The End of a Streak)
Jamie's Great Adventure: Northern Water snake (aka The End of a Streak)
Talking a little bit about the Northern Water snake (Nerodia S. Sipedon). These snakes are periodically found around aquatic environments, such as: rivers, lakes, streams, creeks, reservoirs, and marshes. Pretty much about any kind of fresh water environment will have at least one of these guys hanging around it. These snakes, along with other members of its genus, are commonly mistaken for the water moccasin or cottonmouth (Agkistrodon Piscivorous) due to the fact that they live around water and have the tendency to flatten out their head and open their mouth when threatened. These snakes, however, are completely harmless, and will usually flee into the water if approached. If captured, these snakes will defend themselves aggressively and can give one pretty nasty bite. Cottonmouths do not range this far north and do not range into New England, so if you see a dark colored snake hanging around a body of water it is most certainly one of these beauties. :) Fun Fact: this particular water snake is the only one that's ever bitten me! Thus ending my streak of never being bitten by Nerodia. It was in long grass when i grabbed it and could not tell where the head was. I hope you enjoyed this video, and thanks for watching!- published: 11 Oct 2013

Common Mergansers
Common Mergansers
In this video, eight or so common mergansers (Mergus merganser) are shown swimming upstream in the Saranac River through the town of Saranac Lake. Common mergansers are piscivorous, diving underwater to catch fish. They have serrated edges on their bills to aid them in gripping their prey. The Saranac River appears to have a good fishery, with species including fallfish, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, rock bass, pumpkinseed, northern pike, brown trout, yellow perch, brown bullhead, and others, most of which are not native to the ecosystem, but which could provide the common merganser with a healthy food supply. The common merganser is assessed as being of least concern by the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. This video was recorded next to the Saranac River in the Village of Saranac Lake, New York on September 1, 2013.- published: 05 Oct 2013
