It's not just the oldest freshwater lake on Earth, at 20 to 25 million years old, it's also one of the largest and deepest, holding an astounding one-fifth of the world's freshwater. In the winter, for about five months or from January to May, the lake freezes over but the water is so clear that, from the surface, you can see an astounding 130 feet below you. A photographic worthy natural phenomenon occurs around a very specific time of year, March. Wind, temperature differences, frost and sun in the ice crust cause cracks and ice hummocks to form. Transparent and shining in a turquoise color, these masses of broken ice look like shards of glass rising into the sky. They are caused by the slow and unequal pressure in the main body of the packed ice as well as by the unequal structure and temperature. Now that's one for the bucket list. The Northern Lake Baikal is famous for it's unnatural beauty. During the winter, the Turquoise Ice cubes are formatted on the top of the lake. The Olympic torch's odyssey around Russia reached new depths as it dived into the world's biggest freshwater lake, Lake Baikal in Siberia. This is another first for the Olympic relay. The Sochi-2014 Olympic torch has been to several unusual places no Olympic flame has been before. It has also been in space, visiting the ISS, and the North Pole. Russian TV anchor Ekaterina Andreeva and vice-president of Russia's Olympic Committee Aleksandr Vronsky, accompanied by 26-year-old professional diver Nikolay Rybachenko, emergency rescuer and a former underwater swimmer scout for Russia's Pacific Fleet, dived 15 meters down into Lake Baikal with three special torches that can burn underwater.

Olympic Torch Relay (Day 47) - Olympic Flame goes underwater at Lake Baikal The Sochi 2014 Olympic Flame has today been carried underwater at Lake Baikal, the deepest freshwater lake in the world. As part of a special project of the Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay, 3 torchbearer divers passed each other the Flame at a depth of 13 meters, marking the first time that the Olympic Flame has gone underwater during this year's Relay. The Olympic Torch Relay has got under way to Sochi on 7 October 2013. 90% of the Russian population will be within an hour's reach of the Torch Relay route at some time or other, and this means that approximately 130 million Russian citizens will be able to watch or participate directly in the Relay. In total, it will cover more than 65,000 kilometers, including by car, train, plane, Russian troika and even reindeer sleigh. The Sochi 2014 Olympic Torch Relay is going to be the longest in the entire history of the Olympic Winter Games. During the Olympic Torch Relay, 14,000 torchbearers will carry the Sochi 2014 Olympic torch through 2,900 settlements of 83 regions of the country. The Relay will end with the Olympic Winter Games Opening Ceremony in Sochi on February 7, 2014.
