Earlier, the United States and the European Union had imposed sanctions on several officials from Russia and Ukraine.
This all follows Sunday\'s referendum, in which almost all Crimeans who went to the polls voted in favor becoming a part of Russia.

Serbia\'s ruling Progressive party has declared victory in parliamentary elections, promising deep economic reform.

The margin of victory, rivalling the results of late Slobodan Milosevic during the war years of the 1990s, will see Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister as Serbia embarks on talks to join the EU.

Pollster Cesid said the Progressives had won 48.8 percent of ballots cast on Sunday, which under Serbia\'s electoral system would translate into around 157 seats in the 250-seat parliament. The party itself said it had won 49.3 percent.

For more, we connect live to our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin, who is standing by at the Ministry of National Defense.

Ansar Beit al-Muqdis Terrorists militant publish Military Helicopter Attack

A military helicopter crashed in Egypt\'s North Sinai near Sheikh Zwayed

Egypt\'s Sinai has witnessed an escalation in attacks by militants against the army and police

Spokesman of Egypt\'s military says an army helicopter crashed and its crew is missing in the northern Sinai Peninsula, where troops are battling Islamic militants.

Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali says in a statement that the accident took place early Saturday near the village of el-Kharouba village. He provided no further details on the cause of the crash.

The Egyptian military has been waging operations for months in the northern Sinai to uproot Islamic militants who took hold of several towns and villages in the aftermath of 2011 uprising.

Sinai-based groups intensified their militancy after the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on July 3 military coup. One group, Ansar Beit al-Muqdis claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Cairo Friday that killed six.

The restive Sinai Peninsula has long been considered a safe haven for militants and criminal gangs who use the region as a base for terror activities. In recent months, the remote desert region has been the scene of growing violence and militant attacks on security forces.

Since the ouster of former Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, on July 3, militant groups have launched almost daily attacks in Sinai, killing members of the security forces.

In response, Cairo has launched offensives against the militants, sending thousands of troops backed by tanks and heavy equipment into the region.

Masked men killed three soldiers and left others injured after they opened fire in an early morning attack in central Sinai on Sunday.

According to the official page of military spokesman Ahmed Ali, the attack left 11 soldiers injured. Assailants used a four wheel drive to carry out the attack on the bus carrying military personnel.

Interim President Adly Mansour said in a televised speech on Sunday afternoon that \

Russian President Putin declares Crimea's independence
Russian President Putin declares Crimea's independence
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:13
  • Updated: 18 Mar 2014
Russian President Vladimir Putin has recognized Crimea as a sovereign state... a possible pre-cursor to its annexation, which the West and Ukraine says is illegal. Earlier, the United States and the European Union had imposed sanctions on several officials from Russia and Ukraine. This all follows Sunday's referendum, in which almost all Crimeans who went to the polls voted in favor becoming a part of Russia. Connie Lee has this story. Another step has been taken toward the annexation of Crimea-- Russian President Vladimir Putin... on Monday... recognized the Republic of Crimea... as "sovereign" and "independent." The Executive Order... posted on the Kremlin's website... came just hours after the European Union and the U.S. imposed sanctions and asset freezes against Russian and Ukrainian officials. "...We are imposing sanctions on specific individuals responsible for undermining the sovereignty, territorial integrity, and government of Ukraine." The sanctions, which include travel bans... were in retaliation for Sunday's referendum vote in Crimea... which was deemed illegal by Western leaders. In the referendum,... 97-percent of the voters approved of leaving Ukraine, and joining Russia. The results brought joy to Russians, not only in Crimea... but also in Moscow. "It's legal. I support Putin. I'm for reuniting Russian borders and the reunion of the Russian people." Up to 60-percent of the residents in Crimea are Russian... but ethnic Tatars, who make up more than 10-percent of Crimea's population.... are concerned about inter-ethnic conflict. "Of course we are afraid, but what can we do? Certainly not run away anywhere. No, we don't have that in our minds. I can't even think about it." The Crimean parliament... has declared all Ukrainian state property on the peninsula as property of the Crimean Republic... and its lawmakers are in Moscow to discuss the annexation by Russia. Connie Lee, Arirang News.

BREAKING: Police raid home of Malaysian pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah. BREAKING: MH370 Was Hijacked - A Malaysian government official has told the Associated Press the government has concluded missing Boeing 777 was hijacked. BREAKING: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have been deliberately diverted to Andaman Islands US Navy: Moving ship to Indian ocean for search US looking at Indian Ocean for missing Malaysian plane based on new information WASHINGTON (REUTERS) -- A new search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean as authorities try to determine what happened to missing Malaysian airliner MH370, the White House said on Thursday. "It's my understanding that based on some new information that's not necessarily conclusive -- but new information -- an additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy." Mr Carney did not specify the nature of the "new information." The United States has been helping in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, including the deployment of US Navy vessels. "There are a number of possible scenarios that are being investigated as to what happened to the flight. And we are not in a position at this time to make conclusions about what happened, unfortunately. But we're actively participating in the search," Mr Carney told a regular news briefing. "We're looking at information, pursuing possible leads, working within the investigation being led by the Malaysian government," he added. Meanwhile, a senior Pentagon official told ABC News that a guided missile destroyer - the USS Kidd - is being deployed to the Indian Ocean to continue rescue efforts. The official, who said there were indications that the plane flew four or five hours after dropping off from the radar, added that it would take another 24 hours before the ship reaches its destination. An official also told the AFP that "the Kidd is going to the Straits of Malacca and will be searching in the western section of the strait at the request of the Malaysian government." The international hunt initially focused on the South China Sea east of Malaysia, along the plane's intended route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. But the desperate search has expanded to include waters on both sides of peninsular Malaysia. Malaysia's Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had earlier refuted reports that the missing plane flew a few hours after its last reported position.

Centre Right Party Wins Elections In Serbia
Centre Right Party Wins Elections In Serbia

Serbia's ruling Progressive party has declared victory in parliamentary elections, promising deep economic reform. The margin of victory, rivalling the results of late Slobodan Milosevic during the war years of the 1990s, will see Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister as Serbia embarks on talks to join the EU. Pollster Cesid said the Progressives had won 48.8 percent of ballots cast on Sunday, which under Serbia's electoral system would translate into around 157 seats in the 250-seat parliament. The party itself said it had won 49.3 percent. "No one has had such a day," Vucic told cheering supporters in Belgrade, according to a Reuters news agency report.. "My goal is not to be rich, my goal is for the people of Serbia to live better," he said. The SNS forced the snap election after just 18 months in coalition government with the Socialist Party of outgoing Prime Minister Ivica Dacic, saying it needed a stronger mandate to overhaul Serbia's shaky finances. According to Cesid, the Socialists came in second with 14 percent, securing about 50 seats. The rest of the seats went to the pro-Western Democratic Party and the New Democratic Party of former President Boris Tadic, the two groups that split up before the vote. 'Tough reforms' It was one of the most convincing victories by a party since the multiparty system was introduced in Serbia in the 1990s. In his victory speech, Vucic pledged to vigorously fight against corruption and crime, and revive the economy in the troubled Balkan nation of about 7 million people. "We are facing tough reforms," Vucic said. "But, I am sure that Serbs will soon live better than they are living now." Turnout was about 52 percent, slightly less than during the 2012 parliamentary election that brought the Progressives, former allies of Milosevic, back to power, the Associated Press news agency reported. The vote came as Serbia, a longtime international pariah for fomenting wars in the Balkans in the 1990s, is officially seeking entry into the EU, amid simmering social discontent because of plunging living standards. Serbia this year opened membership talks with the EU after signing a deal normalising ties with Kosovo, a former province which split in 2008, but whose independence Serbia's refuses to recognise. Vucic says he needs a strong mandate to carry out painful reforms needed to help Serbia's economy, which has been ravaged by mismanagement, wars and international sanctions. The opposition has accused him of seeking to introduce what it calls a Russian-type leadership in Serbia by assuming dominant powers in the state, which is deeply split between pro-Russian and pro-Western sentiment.

North Korea fires 25 short-range missiles into East Sea
North Korea fires 25 short-range missiles into East Sea

Another story we are following this afternoon.. is yet another provocation from North Korea. The North Korean military fired off dozens of short-range missiles into the East Sea on Sunday. For more, we connect live to our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin, who is standing by at the Ministry of National Defense. Hello Hyun-bin. Hey guys. Within the last hour, defense ministry officials said they think North Korea's missile launches on Sunday were done in response to annual military drills between Seoul and Washington that are still going on. "North Korea fired off 25 missiles at three different times on Sunday. We view this as an armed protest against our joint military exercises with the U.S. North Korea needs to stop its provocations." The U.S. State Department said Sunday that it is well aware of the missile launches and urged North Korea to stop its provocations, which it said are escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang did not give any prior notification about the launch. The rockets, which were shot into the East Sea, are believed to have a range of 70 kilometers. They were launched between 6:20 p.m. and 9:32 p.m., Korea time, from a location near Wonsan along the east coast. Experts say it's not unusual for North Korea to test-fire missiles, but it is unprecedented for the regime to fire off so many in one day. Officials in Seoul believe the rockets were Soviet-made surface-to-surface FROGs, which lack precision but are very powerful. The missiles can carry a 5-hundred-50 kilogram warhead and are capable of delivering high explosive, nuclear or chemical warheads. The South Korean military and the U.S. have strengthened their surveillance and are urging the North to stop heightening tensions in the region. As I mentioned, this is just the latest in a series of launches... Over the last few weeks, North Korea has test-fired six Scud missiles along with 11 rockets from multiple rocket launchers. So... officials in Seoul believe this frantic activity of test-firings is linked to North Korea's disapproval of the joint drills between Seoul and Washington? Yes, the Defense Ministry says these firings are almost certainly in protest against the annual military exercises, which started late last month and will run through mid-April. Seoul and Washington say the drills are purely defensive, but Pyongyang routinely condemns the drills and calls them a rehearsal for invasion. These latest rocket launches also came just two days after Pyongyang threatened to demonstrate its nuclear deterrence. Those comments seem to be a firm indication North Korea may be preparing a fourth nuclear test in the near future. Back to you guys. Well, we hope that isn't the case and these test-firings stop once the drills end next month. Thank you, Hyun-bin. That was our Defense Ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin reporting on North Korea's test-firing Sunday of 25 short-range missiles.

Ansar Beit al-Muqdis Terrorists militant publish Military Helicopter Attack A military helicopter crashed in Egypt's North Sinai near Sheikh Zwayed Egypt's Sinai has witnessed an escalation in attacks by militants against the army and police Spokesman of Egypt's military says an army helicopter crashed and its crew is missing in the northern Sinai Peninsula, where troops are battling Islamic militants. Interim President Adly Mansour said in a televised speech on Sunday afternoon that "terrorist attacks aim at breaking the will of Egyptians," adding that "the will of Egyptians will not break". He announced that he had requested from the head of the Appeals Court the increase of the number of circuits handling trials of those suspected of being involved in such attacks. Mansour said: "We will not hesitate to take exceptional measures if necessary." Prime Minsiter Hazem El-Beblawi mourned the death of the soldiers in a statement released on Sunday. This attack comes one day after a military helicopter was shot down in North Sinai, for which militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed responsibility, killing five soldiers. After the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July, militancy surged in the Sinai and security forces have been increasingly targeted. One attack targeting a bus in November left 11 soldiers dead and over a dozen injured. One of the deadliest attacks in Sinai took place in August, when armed men killed 25 police soldiers in Rafah. Last week, unidentified assailants attacked a gas pipeline in the area of Risan in central Sinai. The attack was carried out using improvised explosive devices. Typically, militancy has been concentrated in the Sinai Peninsula; however, on Friday, four blasts went off in different areas in Greater Cairo, killing six people and injuring more. Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis has also claimed responsibility for bombings in the capital. The group had also previously claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim.
