Serbia\'s centre-right Progressives, a party of former ultra-nationalists converted to the cause of European Union membership, wins outright majority in parliament promising deep economic reform.

Full Story:

Serbia\'s centre-right Progressives, a party of former ultra-nationalists converted to the cause of European Union membership, won an outright majority in parliament on Sunday (March 16) promising deep economic reform.

The margin of victory, rivalling the results of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic during the war years of the 1990s, will see Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister as Serbia embarks on talks to join the EU.

Reliable pollster Cesid said the Progressives had won 48.8 percent of ballots cast, which under Serbia\'s electoral system would translate into around 157 seats in the 250-seat parliament. The party itself said it had won 49.3 percent.

Another story we are following this afternoon.. is yet another provocation from North Korea.
The North Korean military fired off dozens of short-range missiles into the East Sea on Sunday.
For more, we connect live to our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin, who is standing by at the Ministry of National Defense.
 Hello Hyun-bin.

 Hey guys.
Within the last hour, defense ministry officials said they think North Korea\'s missile launches on Sunday were done in response to annual military drills between Seoul and Washington that are still going on.

Ansar Beit al-Muqdis Terrorists militant publish Military Helicopter Attack

A military helicopter crashed in Egypt\'s North Sinai near Sheikh Zwayed

Egypt\'s Sinai has witnessed an escalation in attacks by militants against the army and police

Spokesman of Egypt\'s military says an army helicopter crashed and its crew is missing in the northern Sinai Peninsula, where troops are battling Islamic militants.

Col. Ahmed Mohammed Ali says in a statement that the accident took place early Saturday near the village of el-Kharouba village. He provided no further details on the cause of the crash.

The Egyptian military has been waging operations for months in the northern Sinai to uproot Islamic militants who took hold of several towns and villages in the aftermath of 2011 uprising.

Sinai-based groups intensified their militancy after the ouster of Islamist President Mohammed Morsi on July 3 military coup. One group, Ansar Beit al-Muqdis claimed responsibility for a series of bombings in Cairo Friday that killed six.

The restive Sinai Peninsula has long been considered a safe haven for militants and criminal gangs who use the region as a base for terror activities. In recent months, the remote desert region has been the scene of growing violence and militant attacks on security forces.

Since the ouster of former Egyptian president, Mohamed Morsi, on July 3, militant groups have launched almost daily attacks in Sinai, killing members of the security forces.

In response, Cairo has launched offensives against the militants, sending thousands of troops backed by tanks and heavy equipment into the region.

Masked men killed three soldiers and left others injured after they opened fire in an early morning attack in central Sinai on Sunday.

According to the official page of military spokesman Ahmed Ali, the attack left 11 soldiers injured. Assailants used a four wheel drive to carry out the attack on the bus carrying military personnel.

Interim President Adly Mansour said in a televised speech on Sunday afternoon that \

With most of the media focusing on Ukraine, its easy to overlook the protests in Venezuela, and its just as easy to assume that both countries face the same issues. In both cases the demonstrators demanded the resignation of the president, but thats were the similarities end. To understand the ongoing protest movement in Venezuela we need to go back to april 2013 when Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election by a one percent difference. The opponent Henrique Capriles refused to accept the results of the election, claiming that there were election irregularities, like ballot stuffing and coerced voting. But the National Elections Council dismissed the calls for a complete review of the allegations. And so the opposition and the government were set on a collision course. The people were gearing up for mass demonstrations, and everyone knew there was a good chance for violance. But what happened next was that Capriles called the whole thing off, because he didnt want any violance. His supporters were obviously dissapointed, but Capriles was determined to challenge the results of the elections through the judical system. Not only was Capriles\'s case rejected but the court even fined him for offending the state. This became Capriles\'s second major failure, and it proved a to be a disasterous one. It damaged his own reputation and also created a rift between the moderate and radical wing elements of the opposition. With Harvard educated Leopoldo López being one of the leaders of the radical wing.

Now Lopez is credited for being the leader of the ongoing protest movement. But this is simply inaccurate, it were in fact university students who started the demonstration in response to a campus sexual assault. This set off a chain reaction and as time went by the demonstrations expanded to include mostly people from the middle class and upper class who were angry over the crime rates, police brutality, corruption, inflation, scarcity of goods, the media blackout, and the list of grievances goes on. The point here is that the protests are extremely polorized and there simply is no unifying theme.

BREAKING: Police raid home of Malaysian pilot, Zaharie Ahmad Shah. BREAKING: MH370 Was Hijacked - A Malaysian government official has told the Associated Press the government has concluded missing Boeing 777 was hijacked. BREAKING: Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 may have been deliberately diverted to Andaman Islands US Navy: Moving ship to Indian ocean for search US looking at Indian Ocean for missing Malaysian plane based on new information WASHINGTON (REUTERS) -- A new search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean as authorities try to determine what happened to missing Malaysian airliner MH370, the White House said on Thursday. "It's my understanding that based on some new information that's not necessarily conclusive -- but new information -- an additional search area may be opened in the Indian Ocean," White House spokesman Jay Carney said. "And we are consulting with international partners about the appropriate assets to deploy." Mr Carney did not specify the nature of the "new information." The United States has been helping in the search for the missing Malaysia Airlines plane, including the deployment of US Navy vessels. "There are a number of possible scenarios that are being investigated as to what happened to the flight. And we are not in a position at this time to make conclusions about what happened, unfortunately. But we're actively participating in the search," Mr Carney told a regular news briefing. "We're looking at information, pursuing possible leads, working within the investigation being led by the Malaysian government," he added. Meanwhile, a senior Pentagon official told ABC News that a guided missile destroyer - the USS Kidd - is being deployed to the Indian Ocean to continue rescue efforts. The official, who said there were indications that the plane flew four or five hours after dropping off from the radar, added that it would take another 24 hours before the ship reaches its destination. An official also told the AFP that "the Kidd is going to the Straits of Malacca and will be searching in the western section of the strait at the request of the Malaysian government." The international hunt initially focused on the South China Sea east of Malaysia, along the plane's intended route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. But the desperate search has expanded to include waters on both sides of peninsular Malaysia. Malaysia's Acting Transport Minister Hishammuddin Hussein had earlier refuted reports that the missing plane flew a few hours after its last reported position.

Serbia's Centre-Right Claims Majority Unseen since Milosevic
Serbia's Centre-Right Claims Majority Unseen since Milosevic

Serbia's centre-right Progressives, a party of former ultra-nationalists converted to the cause of European Union membership, wins outright majority in parliament promising deep economic reform. Full Story: Serbia's centre-right Progressives, a party of former ultra-nationalists converted to the cause of European Union membership, won an outright majority in parliament on Sunday (March 16) promising deep economic reform. The margin of victory, rivalling the results of late strongman Slobodan Milosevic during the war years of the 1990s, will see Progressive Party (SNS) leader Aleksandar Vucic become prime minister as Serbia embarks on talks to join the EU. Reliable pollster Cesid said the Progressives had won 48.8 percent of ballots cast, which under Serbia's electoral system would translate into around 157 seats in the 250-seat parliament. The party itself said it had won 49.3 percent. "My goal is not to be rich, my goal is for the people of Serbia to live better," Vucic said during an address to party supporters on Sunday. Vucic has promised root-and-branch reform of Serbia's bloated public sector, pension system and labour law in order for the country - the most populous to emerge from the ashes of federal Yugoslavia - to claim its place as an economic leader in the Western Balkans. The party is expected to move quickly to secure a new precautionary loan deal with the International Monetary Fund. Analysts said the SNS owed its victory to Vucic's personal popularity as the face of an anti-crime crusade that has struck a chord with many Serbs angry at decades of deep-rooted graft. Critics, however, are unnerved at the power amassed by a man who up until five years ago was a virulent anti-Western disciple of the Greater Serbia ideology that fuelled the wars of Yugoslavia's bloody demise in the 1990s. Vucic, 44, was information minister in the late 1990s when newspapers were fined and shuttered under a draconian law designed to muzzle dissent as Milosevic led Serbia into war with NATO over Kosovo. According to Cesid, the Socialist Party of outgoing Prime Minister Ivica Dacic came in second with 14 percent. The opposition was routed, with the Democratic Party - the main opposition force to Milosevic which held power from his 2000 ouster until 2012 - taking around 6 percent. The party saw its political base split by the defection of former Serbian president Boris Tadic, whose new party also took around 6 percent. Turnout was around 53 percent. In the streets of the capital Belgrade, residents threw their support behind Vucic. "Vucic has won, he has vision how to start something. This is a dead country - no money, no investments. He cannot change a lot, but he is fighter," said Slobodan Pavlovic, a Belgrade resident. "I am very happy and satisfied, I expected such result, we go on," said Belgrade resident Dragan Milivojevic. Analysts say Vucic may seek to bring Tadic into the government. The SNS forced the snap election after just 18 months in coalition government with the Socialists, saying it needed a stronger mandate to overhaul Serbia's shaky finances. The country of 7.3 million people must commit to rein in its budget deficit and public debt in order to secure a new loan deal with the IMF, which could come soon after a new government is formed. The outgoing government, in which Vucic was deputy prime minister, clinched the start of EU membership talks in January, shortly before the coalition collapsed. The talks were reward for a landmark deal under which Serbia agreed to cede its last foothold in the country's former Kosovo province, which declared independence six years ago and has been recognised by more than 100 countries. The EU accession process, likely to run beyond 2020, should help steer reform and lure much-needed foreign investment. Serbia is a natural hub for a region with deep linguistic and cultural ties. North Korea fires 25 short-range missiles into East Sea
North Korea fires 25 short-range missiles into East Sea

Another story we are following this afternoon.. is yet another provocation from North Korea. The North Korean military fired off dozens of short-range missiles into the East Sea on Sunday. For more, we connect live to our defense ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin, who is standing by at the Ministry of National Defense. Hello Hyun-bin. Hey guys. Within the last hour, defense ministry officials said they think North Korea's missile launches on Sunday were done in response to annual military drills between Seoul and Washington that are still going on. "North Korea fired off 25 missiles at three different times on Sunday. We view this as an armed protest against our joint military exercises with the U.S. North Korea needs to stop its provocations." The U.S. State Department said Sunday that it is well aware of the missile launches and urged North Korea to stop its provocations, which it said are escalating tensions on the Korean Peninsula. Pyongyang did not give any prior notification about the launch. The rockets, which were shot into the East Sea, are believed to have a range of 70 kilometers. They were launched between 6:20 p.m. and 9:32 p.m., Korea time, from a location near Wonsan along the east coast. Experts say it's not unusual for North Korea to test-fire missiles, but it is unprecedented for the regime to fire off so many in one day. Officials in Seoul believe the rockets were Soviet-made surface-to-surface FROGs, which lack precision but are very powerful. The missiles can carry a 5-hundred-50 kilogram warhead and are capable of delivering high explosive, nuclear or chemical warheads. The South Korean military and the U.S. have strengthened their surveillance and are urging the North to stop heightening tensions in the region. As I mentioned, this is just the latest in a series of launches... Over the last few weeks, North Korea has test-fired six Scud missiles along with 11 rockets from multiple rocket launchers. So... officials in Seoul believe this frantic activity of test-firings is linked to North Korea's disapproval of the joint drills between Seoul and Washington? Yes, the Defense Ministry says these firings are almost certainly in protest against the annual military exercises, which started late last month and will run through mid-April. Seoul and Washington say the drills are purely defensive, but Pyongyang routinely condemns the drills and calls them a rehearsal for invasion. These latest rocket launches also came just two days after Pyongyang threatened to demonstrate its nuclear deterrence. Those comments seem to be a firm indication North Korea may be preparing a fourth nuclear test in the near future. Back to you guys. Well, we hope that isn't the case and these test-firings stop once the drills end next month. Thank you, Hyun-bin. That was our Defense Ministry correspondent Kim Hyun-bin reporting on North Korea's test-firing Sunday of 25 short-range missiles.

Ansar Beit al-Muqdis Terrorists militant publish Military Helicopter Attack A military helicopter crashed in Egypt's North Sinai near Sheikh Zwayed Egypt's Sinai has witnessed an escalation in attacks by militants against the army and police Spokesman of Egypt's military says an army helicopter crashed and its crew is missing in the northern Sinai Peninsula, where troops are battling Islamic militants. Interim President Adly Mansour said in a televised speech on Sunday afternoon that "terrorist attacks aim at breaking the will of Egyptians," adding that "the will of Egyptians will not break". He announced that he had requested from the head of the Appeals Court the increase of the number of circuits handling trials of those suspected of being involved in such attacks. Mansour said: "We will not hesitate to take exceptional measures if necessary." Prime Minsiter Hazem El-Beblawi mourned the death of the soldiers in a statement released on Sunday. This attack comes one day after a military helicopter was shot down in North Sinai, for which militant group Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis claimed responsibility, killing five soldiers. After the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi in July, militancy surged in the Sinai and security forces have been increasingly targeted. One attack targeting a bus in November left 11 soldiers dead and over a dozen injured. One of the deadliest attacks in Sinai took place in August, when armed men killed 25 police soldiers in Rafah. Last week, unidentified assailants attacked a gas pipeline in the area of Risan in central Sinai. The attack was carried out using improvised explosive devices. Typically, militancy has been concentrated in the Sinai Peninsula; however, on Friday, four blasts went off in different areas in Greater Cairo, killing six people and injuring more. Ansar Beit Al-Maqdis has also claimed responsibility for bombings in the capital. The group had also previously claimed responsibility for the failed assassination attempt on interior minister Mohamed Ibrahim.

Venezuela's protests explained
Venezuela's protests explained

Not only was Capriles's case rejected but the court even fined him for offending the state. This became Capriles's second major failure, and it proved a to be a disasterous one. CaspianReport is a one-man-operation. If you want to help out, you can do so by a donation.
