Rufous /ˈruːfəs/ is a colour that may be described as reddish-brown or brownish-red, as of rust or oxidised iron.
The first recorded use of rufous as a colour name in English was in 1782. Its hex code is #A81C07. However, the colour is also recorded earlier in 1527 as a diagnostic urine colour.
The name "rufous" is derived from the meaning of "red" in Latin and is used as an adjective in the names of many animals, especially birds, to describe the colour of their skin, fur or plumage.

The Rufous hummingbird (Selasphorus rufus) is a small hummingbird, about 8 cm (3.1 in) long with a long, straight and slender bill. These birds are known for their extraordinary flight skills, flying 2,000 mi (3,200 km) during their migratory transits. It is one of seven species in the genus Selasphorus.
The adult male has a white breast, rufous face, flanks and tail and an iridescent orange-red throat patch or gorget. Some males have some green on back and/or crown. The female has green, white, some iridescent orange feathers in the center of the throat, and a dark tail with white tips and rufous base.
The female is slightly larger than the male. Females and the rare green-backed males are extremely difficult to differentiate from Allen's hummingbird. This is a typical-sized hummingbird, being a very small bird. It weighs 2–5 g (0.071–0.176 oz), measures 7–9 cm (2.8–3.5 in) long and spans 11 cm (4.3 in) across the wings.
They feed on nectar from flowers using a long extendable tongue or catch insects on the wing. These birds require frequent feeding while active during the day and become torpid at night to conserve energy. Because of their small size, they are vulnerable to insect-eating birds and animals.
The rufous fantail (Rhipidura rufifrons) is a small Passerine bird, most commonly known also as the black-breasted rufous-fantail or rufous-fronted fantail, which can be found in Australia, Indonesia, New guinea and the Solomon Islands. In these countries they inhabit rainforests, wet forests, swamp woodlands and mangroves.
Characteristic of species that have a large range, the rufous fantail has many subspecies. However the taxonomic treatment of its subspecies and other relatives is still debated. The rufous fantail is easily distinguished by their orange-reddish-brown back, rump and base of tail. They have a black and white breast that grades into a white colour on the chin and throat.
They are migratory, travelling to south-eastern Australia in the spring to breed, and then north in the autumn.
The rufous fantail tends to feed on small insects in the lower parts of the canopy. They are very active birds making short, frequent flights. They may also hop between foliage or on the ground, during foraging.
We found this little female hummingbird on the sidewalk in our neighbourhood in Vancouver, Canada. After nursing it with some sugar water, we brought it to an animal care centre where it is being cared for.
These birds alternated at the feeder for an hour on April 26th 2013. The Anna's Hummingbird lives here year round. The Rufous Hummingbird returned in early April. The larger Anna's is particularly aggressive. The Rufous has learned to time his visits to the feeder.

The One Show 4th November 2015: Mike Dilger and John Walters watch the mating dance of the Rufous Grasshopper in South Devon.
In this clip, two male Rufous Hummingbirds are on the feeder showing different levels of rufous in their plumage. The one on the left has a completely rufous back, while the individual on the right has about 25% green feathers on the back. This is a great view of the variability in this species! This site hosts a total of 24 Perky-Pet® Grand Master hummingbird feeders, and during peak migration can attract hundreds of hummingbirds from a dozen species that are migrating through the arid mountains. The Rufous Fantail is a familiar and endearing bird of Rainforest and wet Schlerophyll forests of Eastern Australia. They are continually on the move, hunting for insects on the forest floor and mid strata. The tail is regularly fanned and waved from side to side. The nest is a small cup nest built in the fork of a tree. I filmed these birds on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland. Tim Siggs. ABVC.

This recording features display noises from a male Rufous Hummingbird. The high-pitched noises are from the wings in flight; lower-pitched noise made by the tail at the bottom of the display dive; and sputtering noises from the "waggle" display as the bird comes out of the dive. (Audio by Andrew Spencer, accessible at www.xeno-canto.org/76412.) This is the most northerly breeding species of hummingbird in North America. It also makes one of the longest migratory journeys of any bird in the world as measured by body size, traveling up to several thousand miles to wintering grounds in Mexico. Population of Rufous Hummingbird is falling close to two percent each year as habitats are lost and threats along its long migration take their toll. This species is benefiting from ABC's efforts t...
The Rufous Hummingbird (selasphorus rufus) is about 10 cm long with a long, straight and very slender bill. The female is slightly larger than the male. Often described as feisty, the Rufous hummingbird may have the ideal size-to-weight ratio among North American hummingbirds. This bird outflies all other species, and usually gets its way at feeders at the expense of slower, less-manoeuvrable hummers. The Rufous has the longest migration route of all US hummingbirds. Their breeding habitat is open areas and forest edges in western North America from southern Alaska to California. This bird nests further north than any other hummingbird. The female builds a nest in a protected location in a shrub or conifer. The male aggressively defends feeding locations within his territory. The same ma...

Captured effortlessly
That's the way it was
Happened so naturally
I did not know it was love
The next thing I felt was
You holding me close
What was I gonna do?
I let myself go
And now we're flyin' through the star
I hope this night will last forever
I've been waitin' for you
It's been so long
I knew just what I would do
When I heard your song
Filled my heart with your bliss
Gave me freedom
You knew I could not resist
I needed someone
And now we're flyin' through the stars
I hope this night will last forever
Oh oh oh oh
CHORUS:
Ain't nobody
Loves me better
Makes me happy
Makes me feel this way
Ain't nobody
Loves me better than you
I wait for night time to come
And bring you to me
Can't believe I'm the one
I was so lonely
I feel like no one could feel
I must be dreamin'
I want this dream to be real
I need this feelin'
I make my wish upon a star
And hope this night will last forever
CHORUS
And first you put your arms around me
Then you put your charms around me
I can't resist this sweet surrender
Oh my nights are warm and tender
We stare into each other's eyes
And what we see is no surprise
Got a feeling most with treasure
And a love so deep we cannot measure
