Syria War - Heavy Clashes And Fighting During Al-Nusra Attack On Aleppo Central Prison. Syrian Civil War 2014 rages on as the Al-Nusra Front launched an combined assault with other rebel groups on Aleppos Central Prison. Heavy clashes fighting and firefights errupted as the joint force of rebel groups attacked the besiged prison. The vehicle was hit about 100m in front of the prison by the defenders with heavy fire and rpgs and detonated prematurely as a result but the intensity of the blast destroyed the headquarters of the prison protection unit and killed two officers while 10 more soldiers where wounded. After this three tanks targeted the first and second prison towers with about 15 shells, killing five prisoners and injuring 10. In conjunction with the tank attack, attackers opened fire with heavy machine guns at the prison from six different points, leading to severe damage to the prison building. Rebel fighters managed to get close to the prison entrance, where violent clashes took place. The Syrian Army supported by the Syrian Air Force managed it to repell the rebel attack and at least one commander of the rebels a native chechen was killed by a sharpnel due to a government fired mortar shell. The killed chechen rebel commander Saifullah al-Chichani whose real name is Rislan Mashalikashvili, fought in Chechnya, where he was injured. After beeing unable to go to Iraq, he went to Afghanistan in 2005, where he fought US forces. When the Syrian crisis started, he decided to go to Syria and contribute to the establishment of an Islamic caliphate. In Syria, he led the Army of the Caliphate, which consisted of about 500 Chechen fighters. At the end of 2013, Saifullah pledged allegiance to Jabhat al-Nusra and declared that he and all his fighters and weapons were joining. He participated in many battles in Syria, the most important of which was the battle to control the Aleppo neighborhood of Sheikh Said and the battle of al-Kindi hospital. It is noteworthy that Saifullah was a close friend of Dokka Umarov, the emir of the Caucasus emirate. The rebels were forced to fall back when government troops launched the counter-attack, dropping barrels filled with TNT from helicopters. Apparently the rebel attack failed and booth sides suffered heavy losses during the assault also an unknown number of prisoners have died from disease during the course of the siege, while others have been killed in their cells as a result of the fighting between the rebels and regime troops. Unable to take them out, the victims have reportedly been buried in a mass grave inside the prison. Even if the rebels claim to have released about 300 prisoners in the operation no proof was given.
