Simon Church ended Sheffield Wednesday's hopes of an FA Cup Steel City derby clash with Sheffield United by nudging Charlton into the Sixth Round. Fulham vs Sheffield United 0-1, late winner at Craven Cottage causes upset - FAC4 Replay
Sheffield United may be threatened with relegation to League Two, but they pulled off a famous victory at Craven Cottage on Tuesday night, with a goal in the final throes of extra-time. On a night as long as John Brayford's beard and as cold and wet as a swim in the nearby Thames, 97th-minute substitute Shaun Miller stole in for a header at the far post after a knock-down from Harry Maguire. The late drama gives the Blades a home tie against either Preston North End or Nottingham Forest - who replay on Wednesday night. With his side labouring at the bottom of the Premier League and seemingly bereft of confidence, Meulensteen would have dearly loved to call upon Kostas Mitroglou, Lewis Holtby, John Heitinga and William Kvist, but the deadline day signings came too late for the 1-1 draw at Bramall Lane, and as a consequence were inelgible here. And with a further four players leaving Craven Cottage last week, Meulensteen had little option but to call in a number of his squad players. Sheffield United manager Nigel Clough had problems of his own, after watching his side lose to Crewe Alexandra, and further increase fears of relegation from League One. And yet while it is often true that The FA Cup can be a welcome distraction from the drudgery of a league campaign, there was little to celebrate and precious little to comment upon in a dreadful, goalless opening 90 minutes. Over half an hour passed before the first chance - if indeed it can be called that - when Hugo Rodallega set the ball for Clint Dempsey on the edge of the area, but the American sent his shot on a trajectory that would have made NASA proud. Shortly after the break Blades left-back Bob Harris - who last month swapped the bright lights of Blackpool for the steel city - sent a free-kick fizzing over the bar, and then tested David Stockdale in the Fulham goal. Meulensteen made a double-change on the hour - removing Rodallega and Alex Kacaniklic in favour of Damien Duff and Ashkan Dejagah, and the pair managed to add industry on the flanks. Duff tested Mark Howard with a fizzing deep cross from the right, sending the United keeper scrambling to parry on an increasingly greasy surface. But that was as enterprising as it got from either side, and the two teams were inseparable as the tie entered its fourth hour, and extra-time. Then, as the wind picked up and the rain came in like cloak off the River Thames, Brayford showed a rare turn of pace and surged forwards from right-back. Brayford, on loan from Cardiff City, drove past three Fulham players before firing a powerful drive across Stockdale, and the keeper saved well. With five minutes of extra-time Patijm Kasami came close to lifting the tedium, driving with his left foot from the edge of the area, but it swerved beyond the angle of the goal. Kasami then sent another shot to the right-hand side of Howard's goal, but it was Miller and the Blades who had the final say.- published: 05 Feb 2014

Sheffield United vs Nottingham Forest 3-1, FA Cup 5th Round goals & highlights
Sheffield United reached the last eight of The FA Cup for the first time in a decade after coming from behind to down Nottingham Forest by 3-1. Two late goals from Chris Porter sent Bramall Lane into raptures, as Conor Coady had earlier cancelled out Jamie Paterson's first-half effort before Porter's brace set up a potential Steel City derby in the quarter finals. Claims of Roma migrants causing problems for sheffield's community ...
David Blunkett's claims of Roma migrants causing riots in UK streets 'unhelpful and unproductive' David Blunkett's comments on Roma migrants causing riots in cities across Britain have been branded 'unhelpful' and 'not productive' by a lobby group director. The former home secretary had said that Roma youngsters were culturally different 'because they were living on the edge of woods and not going to school'. But Atul Hatwal, director of the Migration Matters Trust, told Metro that more needed to be done to integrate Roma into local communities. He said: 'Tensions are understandable when there is rapid change, and there is not enough done to bring communities together. What's more useful will be solutions. What is the way for Roma to be more integrated into the local community? 'It's one thing to acknowledge a problem but it's more productive to define the solution and that's what he hasn't done in his statement.' Yesterday, Mr Blunkett warned that an influx of Roma migrants could heighten racial tension and cause riots comparable with those between white Britons and Asian communities in 2001. The MP told BBC Radio Sheffield: 'Roma youngsters have come from a background which is actually even more different culturally because they were living on the edge of woods, not going to school, and not used to the norms of everyday life. 'You're right on the edge of understandable tensions because they are understandable. It's a cry for help from many people -- please, for goodness sake, put us back to at least the semblance that we had before. 'We saw this in Bradford, Burnley and Oldham all those years ago when I first became home secretary.' Dave Brown, head of Migration Yorkshire, conceded that some of Mr Blunkett's remarks could be seen as stereotyping Roma. However, he said he believed the MP for Sheffield, Brightside and Hillsborough was not criticising them. He told Metro: 'Mr Blunkett was just highlighting where there are issues in local areas and where the cultural differences are creating problems. 'I don't believe he is blaming Roma for this. His message is that despite the difficulties in a time of austerity, there is still work going on but councils are struggling without the resources. 'Some tensions are understandable, but some is because of a misperception that Roma are doing something wrong. If Roma people are outside your house late at night chatting, they are probably not doing something wrong, but it might make you uncomfortable. 'Roma communities are here to stay. The important thing with any community is that we integrate them. There's no point in hoping things will change.' Ukip leader Nigel Farage has warned the MP's concerns should be taken seriously. He said: 'Mr Blunkett should be admired for the courage he has shown by speaking so plainly on this issue. Of course the type of language he has used I would have been utterly condemned for using. 'My question is if [the government] won't listen to the dangers of opening the door to Romania and Bulgaria next year when Ukip speak out on it, will they listen to David Blunkett? I certainly hope so.- published: 14 Nov 2013
