With most of the media focusing on Ukraine, its easy to overlook the protests in Venezuela, and its just as easy to assume that both countries face the same issues. In both cases the demonstrators demanded the resignation of the president, but thats were the similarities end. To understand the ongoing protest movement in Venezuela we need to go back to april 2013 when Nicolas Maduro won the presidential election by a one percent difference. The opponent Henrique Capriles refused to accept the results of the election, claiming that there were election irregularities, like ballot stuffing and coerced voting. But the National Elections Council dismissed the calls for a complete review of the allegations. And so the opposition and the government were set on a collision course. The people were gearing up for mass demonstrations, and everyone knew there was a good chance for violance. But what happened next was that Capriles called the whole thing off, because he didnt want any violance. His supporters were obviously dissapointed, but Capriles was determined to challenge the results of the elections through the judical system. Not only was Capriles\'s case rejected but the court even fined him for offending the state. This became Capriles\'s second major failure, and it proved a to be a disasterous one. It damaged his own reputation and also created a rift between the moderate and radical wing elements of the opposition. With Harvard educated Leopoldo López being one of the leaders of the radical wing.

Now Lopez is credited for being the leader of the ongoing protest movement. But this is simply inaccurate, it were in fact university students who started the demonstration in response to a campus sexual assault. This set off a chain reaction and as time went by the demonstrations expanded to include mostly people from the middle class and upper class who were angry over the crime rates, police brutality, corruption, inflation, scarcity of goods, the media blackout, and the list of grievances goes on. The point here is that the protests are extremely polorized and there simply is no unifying theme.

Three years ago, an uprising against the Assad regime turned into what looked like a straightforward civil war between Syrian government forces and rebels. However, over time, what had started as a largely secular opposition movement began to take on more of a radical Islamist tone, with two al Qaeda offshoots -- the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) and Jabhat al-Nusra -- becoming the dominant forces on the ground across the rebel-held North.

One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria\'s government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe\'s doorstep.

Missing Malaysia Plane : Search Area Widened - Few Pics Of Passengers On Board Included In Video - 9 Mar 2014

Rescue teams looking for a missing Malaysia Airlines flight have widened their search area, the Malaysian transport minister says.

They are investigating the possibility the plane turned back after losing contact, Hishammuddin Hussein said.

He said investigators were checking the entire passenger list and that counter terrorism units have been informed.

Flight MH370 disappeared south of Vietnam more than 24 hours ago with 239 people on board.

Air and sea rescue teams have been searching an area of the South China Sea south of Vietnam. Mr Hussein told a press conference in Kuala Lumpur that this area had now been widened.

Venezuela's protests explained
Venezuela's protests explained
  • Order:
  • Duration: 9:07
  • Updated: 09 Mar 2014
Not only was Capriles's case rejected but the court even fined him for offending the state. This became Capriles's second major failure, and it proved a to be a disasterous one. CaspianReport is a one-man-operation. If you want to help out, you can do so by a donation. A brutal sectarian bloodbath and according to the UN 'the worst humanitarian crisis the world has seen in decades' the grim reality for Syria, where the conflict has now entered its fourth year. A top Al Qaeda spokesman who is the son-in-law of Usama bin Laden has been captured overseas and charged in the United States with conspiracy to kill Americans, according to an indictment unsealed Thursday. Rep. Peter King, R-N.Y., former chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, first revealed that Sulaiman Abu Ghaith was captured in Jordan, and sources told Fox News he was apprehended "some time ago," without giving specifics. He is expected to appear Friday morning in a federal court in New York City to face the charges. "It has been 13 years since Abu Ghaith allegedly worked alongside Usama Bin Laden in his campaign of terror, and 13 years since he allegedly took to the public airwaves, exhorting others to embrace Al Qaeda's cause and warning of more terrorist attacks like the mass murder of 9/11," U.S. Attorney Bharara said in a news release announcing Abu Ghaith's arrest. "The memory of those attacks is indelibly etched on the American psyche, and today's action is the latest example of our commitment to capturing and punishing enemies of the United States, no matter how long it takes." Attorney General Eric Holder added, "No amount of distance or time will weaken our resolve to bring America's enemies to justice." But the news sparked criticism from Republican senators Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, who said Thursday the Obama administration's decision to bring Abu Ghaith to court in New York is wrong, "sneaky" and against the will of Congress. Graham says Abu Ghaith is clearly an enemy combatant and should have been sent straight to the Guantanamo Bay detainee facility in Cuba for extended questioning. Abu Ghaith became an international name in late 2001 when he appeared on pan-Arab satellite television urging Muslims everywhere to fight the United States and warning of more attacks similar to those of Sept. 11. In one video, he was sitting with bin Laden in front of a rock face in Afghanistan. A teacher and mosque preacher in Kuwait, he was stripped of his Kuwaiti citizenship after 9/11. He is identified as a major Al Qaeda core official by the New America Foundation think tank in Washington. King said Abu Ghaith was involved in the planning in the 9/11 attacks against the World Trade Center and Pentagon. "Definitely, one by one, we are getting the top echelons of Al Qaeda," King said. "I give the (Obama) administration credit for this: It's steady and it's unrelenting and it's very successful." It's likely that Abu Ghaith will face a host of terrorism-related charges and possibly murder, which could carry the death penalty, said attorney Michael Rosensaft, who was a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney's office in Manhattan until last fall and is now in private practice. He predicted the trial will last months, if not years, and that some of the evidence against Abu Ghaith will be a challenge for prosecutors to bring to court if it is classified. Abu Ghaith's trial will make one of the few prosecutions of senior Al Qaeda leaders on U.S. soil. Charging foreign terror suspects in American federal courts was a top pledge by President Obama shortly after he took office in 2009 -- aimed, in part, to close the detention center at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. On Thursday, King called Ghaith's capture a "very significant victory" in U.S. efforts against Al Qaeda. "The propaganda statements in which Abu Ghaith and his late father-in-law, Usama bin Laden, praised the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 are alone enough to merit the most serious punishment," King said White House Press Secretary Jay Carney declined to comment on the capture when asked during Thursday's press briefing.

One VICE filmmaker managed to secure unprecedented access to both al-Qaeda factions battling Syria's government forces, despite the risk of journalists being kidnapped. This is a remarkable portrait of the foreign volunteers and local Syrians willing to fight and die to establish a new caliphate on Europe's doorstep. Missing Malaysia Plane : Search Area Widened - Few Pics Of Passengers On Board Included In Video - 9 Mar 2014 Rescue teams looking for a missing Malaysia Airlines flight have widened their search area, the Malaysian transport minister says. "We are looking at the possibility of an aircraft turn-back," he said. "Different locations will have to be identified." Vietnamese navy ships have reached two oil slicks which were spotted earlier, but they found no signs of wreckage. 'Suspect' Mr Hussein said that at least four names on the passenger list were "suspect", but the whole manifest was being investigated. It follows reports that two of the passengers listed as travelling - an Italian and an Austrian - were not actually on the flight. They both reportedly had their passports stolen in Thailand in recent years. Mr Hussein said international agencies including the FBI had joined the investigation and that all angles were being examined. "Our own intelligence have been activated, and of course, the counterterrorism units... from all the relevant countries have been informed," he said. "The main thing here for me and for the families concerned is that we find the aircraft." At least 7 dead, 70 injured after explosion levels 2 NYC buildings The death toll in Wednesday's suspected gas explosion and building collapse in New York City has risen to seven, with four additional victims found early this morning.NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- There's been an explosion and partial collapse of a building in East Harlem, the FDNY told CBS 2. The incident took place near 114th and Park Avenue. Smoke could be seen rising from the area. There's no word yet of injuries. Many took to Twitter and began posting pictures. Metro-North crews are checking nearby train tracks for any debris that may have fallen in the area. Hudson Line service in and out of Grand Central Terminal is delayed until further notice. (ABC) Investigators found the bodies of two adult males and one adult female this morning, ABC News has confirmed. An additional body was pulled out of the rubble after dawn. Several people are reported missing and have not yet been found, FDNY officials said. Two of the victims have been identified so far -- Griselde Camacho, who worked as a public safety officer at Hunter College, and Carmen Tanco, 67. More than 60 others were injured in the incident, which happened at 9:30 a.m. yesterday in the building at 116th Street and Park Avenue. Con Edison was responding to a report of a gas odor when the explosion happened. "This is a tragedy of the worse kind because there was no indication in time to save people," New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio said. The FBI responded to the incident, but there is no indication of terror or crime, authorities said. Google images of the building show two commercial storefronts on the ground floor with four floors of residential apartments above those storefronts. "I was standing in my room when I heard the explosion and the building shook at the same time," said Rosario Valderdo, who lives in the apartment building next door. "The windows were shattered and I grabbed my dog and went outside. The building had collapsed and there were people underneath it and they were trying to take them away from there." Neighbors said shattered glass from nearby storefronts and debris littered the ground following the blast. "The explosion woke me up. The building shook, my mother's window fell in," said neighbor Adam Ocasio. "You could see the smoke and debris as soon as you got outside." Brandon Whitaker was also sleeping in his home in the nearby Taft Houses when he was awoken with a start. "My room shook, I was disoriented," Whitaker said. "Feels like an earthquake right in your room, an earthquake and a car crash right in your room, that's loud and abrasive. It was shaking, and I thought the Metro-North [train] had crashed."
