Nobody knows what happened to Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370, other than air traffic controllers lost track of it not long after it left Kuala Lumpur, the capital of Malaysia, on its way to Beijing. The families and loved ones of the 239 passengers and crew aboard expected the worst as they awaited any significant development. The biggest clue so far is traces of oil that a Vietnamese plane spotted while flying over the search area. The oil slicks are between 6 and 9 miles long and are suspected to be from the missing plane, the Vietnam government's official news agency reported. The traces of oil were found about 90 miles south of Tho Chu Island, the report said. In the meantime, the search area is being expanded and efforts to locate the plane will continue overnight, said Azharuddin Abdul Rahman, director general of civil aviation in Malaysia. The area of focus has been in the South China Sea, where the Malaysian airspace and Vietnamese airspace meet. "We have no idea where this aircraft is right now," Malaysia Airlines Vice President of Operations Control Fuad Sharuji said on CNN's "AC360." Bits and pieces of information have begun to form, but it remains unclear how they fit into the bigger picture, if at all. For instance, after the airline released a manifest, Austria denied that one of its citizens was onboard the flight as the list stated. The Austrian citizen was safe and sound, and his passport had been stolen two years ago, Austrian Foreign Ministry spokesman Martin Weiss told CNN. Similarly, Italy's foreign ministry confirmed that no Italians were onboard MH370, even though an Italian was listed on the manifest. Malaysian officials said they were aware of reports that the Italian's passport was also stolen, but had not confirmed it. A U.S. intelligence official said authorities are aware of reporting about lost or stolen passports used by passengers on the missing flight. "No nexus to terrorism yet," the official said, "although that's by no means definitive. We're still tracking." Malaysian authorities reiterated during a news conference that they are not ruling anything out regarding the missing aircraft. China, Vietnam, Singapore and Malaysia were conducting search and rescue operations south of Tho Chu island in the South China Sea, reported Xinhua, China's official news agency. Ships, helicopters and airplanes are being utilized. Officials appeared resigned to accepting the worst outcome. "I'd just like to say our thoughts and prayers are with the bereaved families," Malaysian Prime Minister Najib Razak said during a news conference.- published: 09 Mar 2014

Malaysia Airlines flight Crash in Vietnam Sea
Helpline +603 7884 1234 A Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew crashed in the Vietanam Sea on Saturday, Vietnamese state media said, quoting a senior naval official. The Boeing 777-200ER flight from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing had been missing for hours when Vietnam's Tuoi Tre news quoted Admiral Ngo Van Phat as saying he had asked boats from an island off south Vietnam to rush to the crash site. If the report is confirmed, it would mark the U.S.-built airliner's deadliest crash since entering service 19 years ago. Malaysia Airlines had yet to confirm that the aircraft had crashed. It said earlier in the day that no distress signal had been given and cited early speculation that the plane may have landed in Nanming in southern China.- published: 08 Mar 2014

Missing Malaysian Airlines: Stolen passports raise terrorism fears | By CNN
(The Telegraph) - Air safety experts are investigating whether an airliner that mysteriously vanished in the Far East could have been the target of a terrorist attack. Twenty-four hours after Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 disappeared over the South China Sea, the only clue to the fate of its 239 passengers and crew was the revelation that at least two people on board were using stolen passports. The reports said that in that incident the tip of the wing of the Malaysian Airlines Boeing 777 broke off. Crying relatives of Chinese passengers on board the plane wept at Beijing airport as it became clear the jet had probably crashed. Retired American Airlines captain Jim Tilmon told CNN today (Sat) that 'it doesn't sound very good,' as the search continued for the missing jet. 'The route is mostly overland, which means there would be plenty of radars and radios to contact the plane. But if nothing has been heard... Malaysia Airlines flight 'presumed crashed'
Vietnam's government says it's spotted two large oil slicks in the sea off its southern coast that could be from a missing Malaysian Airlines flight. Radio contact was lost with the Boeing 777 40 minutes after it left Kuala Lumpur on it' way to Beijing. 227 passengers and a crew of 12 were on board. The Malaysia Airlines flight carrying 227 passengers and 12 crew lost contact with air traffic controllers early on Saturday en route from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. Reuters While the whereabouts of Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 are still unknown, new details are surfacing about the plane's mysterious disappearance. Several news outlets report that two passengers aboard the Boeing 777-200 weren't who they said they were, sparking fears of a possible terrorist plot. According to the New York Times, the names of two passengers listed on the flight's manifest, passengers 63 and 101, match the names of two passports that were stolen in Asia a few years ago. The passports belonged to two men -- one Austrian and one Italian -- who authorities have confirmed were not on Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 and are in fact alive. The Italian man, Luigi Maraldi, told reporters that he lives in Bangkok. The passports were both reported stolen in Thailand. According to China Southern, which operates a codeshare on the flight, both passengers using the stolen passports had booked through its ticketing office, the Telegraph reports. "We believe that the name and passport were used by an unidentified person to board the plane," a spokesman for the Austria foreign ministry told NBC News. Authorities say that while the stolen passports certainly raise questions, investigators are far from calling the flight's disappearance an act of terror. "At this time, we have not identified this as an act of terrorism," a senior American intelligence official, who remained anonymous, told the New York Times. "While the stolen passports are interesting, they don't necessarily say to us that this was a terrorism act." Another U.S. official told NBC News that investigators have not found a "nexus to terrorism," but that the search is still in its early stages and "that it's by no means definitive." Malaysia Airlines flight MH370 departed from Kuala Lumpur at 12:41 a.m. Saturday morning and was scheduled to land in Beijing at 6:30 a.m. Air-traffic control lost contact with the aircraft carrying 227 passengers, most of whom were Chinese, and 12 crew members two hours after the flight left Kuala, but the last radar contact was at 1:19 a.m., just 40 minutes after the flight began. A spokesman for Malaysia Airlines confirmed Saturday evening that air traffic control in Malaysia last spoke with the flight crew at around 1:30 a.m., but that the plane did not disappear from air traffic control systems until an hour and 10 minutes later. Investigators fear the Boeing B777-200 aircraft crashed into the South China Sea somewhere between Malaysia and Vietnam. Search crews from Malaysia, Vietnam, China and the U.S. were dispatched to try and recover wreckage from the plane. All they found was an oil slick in the search area, which authorities suspect may be from the downed Boeing aircraft. One of the passengers travelling on board a missing Malaysian Airlines carrying 239 people was using a stolen Italian passport, it has emerged. Luigi Maraldi, 37, from Cesena, was named as one of the travellers on board flight MH370 from Kuala Lumpur to Beijing. "I'm alive - I'm in Thailand!" he said. Mr Maraldi reported his passport stolen on August 1 last year and was not on board the plane, according to news agency ANSA. The development raises more worrying questions about what happened to the passenger jet before it disappeared over the South China Sea in the early hours of Saturday. A 12-mile oil slick has reportedly been spotted off the south coast of Vietnam which is being investigated.- published: 09 Mar 2014
