Michael Bernstein's Fracture Mechanics at Lix & Kix 2011
This is the first part of Michael Bernstein's featured reading on Wednesday 18 May 2011 during the Lix & Kix Poetry Extravaganza at bela Dubby Art Gallery & Beer Cafe in Lakewood, Ohio. In this clip, Michael performs his composition Fracture Mechanics, accompanied by poet TM Göttl and guitarist Will Merchant. "Fracture Mechanics" is an intermedia trio piece where parts of the text are decided by the readers before or during the performance, and where the musical cues are not entirely musical. This allows for a piece that is challenging for the performers, truly collaborative, and unique to each performance. Michael Bernstein is a Chicago-born writer and musician. He is the author of eleven chapbooks, and has been a contributor to numerous literary publications. The Lix and Kix Poetry Extravaganza is produced and emceed by Dianne Borsenik and John Burroughs. The Antikythera Mechanism
The Antikythera Mechanism is a graphic-fueled experimental narrative journey,
traversing snow covered alien desert landscapes, fractured forests, and hyper-futuristic
cities. In this re-imagining of the discovery of the Antikythera Mechanism (an ancient
mechanical computer - dating back to 150-100 BCE), our surreal fairy tale follows our
guide as she unearths a mysterious object that acts as a catalyst to unfold reality and
open up a series of answers in the form of worlds ranging from distorted natural vistas
to stylized synthetic futurescapes. The film was featured on BT’s 2006 DVD release
This Binary Universe.

Applied Mechanics 2012-2013 Indiegogo Fundraising Campaign
Applied Mechanics is a sponsored project of Fractured Atlas, a non-profit arts service organization. Contributions for the purposes of Applied Mechanics must be made payable to Fractured Atlas and are tax-deductible to the extent permitted by law.
Applied Mechanics is a theatre company that challenges conventional ideas of theatrical space, narrative, and performer-audience relationship. Our plays are immersive experiences for our audiences, stunning landscapes they can enter and intimate portraits they can encounter from any angle they choose.
We’ve made plays in houses, in bars, and in warehouses; plays that pack up into suitcases and travel across the country, and plays that fill whole buildings with constructed cities. In our most recent project, Vainglorious, 26 actors swirled 20 years of European history into a vibrant physical fantasia that enveloped the audience.
Now, for the first time, we find ourselves with an entire season. The new show we are building for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival is already booked to remount at the Annenberg Center in February 2013, and Vainglorious has been invited to participate in the Philadelphia International Festival of Art in April 2013.
This IndieGoGo campaign asks for your support to raise funds for Applied Mechanics’ 2012-2013 season. This season will include:
1-A new work for the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, which will transform Jolie Laide, a gallery in Philly's Loft District, and premiere there in September.
2-This show, which explores themes of bravery and transformation, will tour to the Annenberg Center in February 2013.
3-A remount of our epic historical fantasia Vainglorious for the Philadelphia Festival of Art (PIFA) in April 2013.
Applied Mechanics is director Rebecca Wright, designer Maria Shaplin, and performers Kristen Bailey, Thomas Choinacky, Jessica Hurley, John Jarboe, and Mary Tuomanen. Our work is characterized by immersive sets, parallel narrative structures (with many scenes happening simultaneously, and the audience free to wander and watch how they want), and the incorporation of food, drink, and other intimate sensory experiences. Our process is collaborative, democratic, and based on a commitment to organizational and artistic innovation. We eat a meal together at every rehearsal. We are based in Philadelphia.

Multiscale Modeling of Dynamic Crack Propagation: Mixed Mode Fracture of Magnesia
A multiscale approach is employed to solve a center-cracked problem with the purpose to redefine fracture toughness and to simulate different modes of crack initiation and propagation. The specimen is divided into three regions: (1) far field, modeled by classical fracture mechanics, (2) near field, modeled by a multiscale field theory and analyzed by a generalized finite element method, and (3) crack tip atomic region, modeled by molecular dynamics. The exact and analytical solution of the far field is utilized as the boundary condition at the interface between the far field and the near field. The interface between the near field and the crack tip atomic region is treated by full blown interatomic forces. In this work, crystals of perovskite (barium titanate) and rocksalt (magnesia) have been studied. Fracture toughness at atomic scale is defined as a material property associated with instability of MD simulation. For more information, please visit home.gwu.edu

Video by Cris McConkey. Part 3 of 3. Q&A. Town of Enfield, NY February 1, 2010. This program is part of a public education series on un-conventional gas drilling sponsored by the Town of Enfield. For several years Dr. Ingraffea has been speaking all over the world about the process and impacts of shale gas extraction. The Dwight C. Baum Professor of Engineering at Cornell, Dr. Ingraffea has taught fracture mechanics, finite element methods, and structural mechanics at Cornell for 35 years. Dr. Ingraffea's research concentrates on computer simulation and physical testing of complex fracturing processes. He and his students have authored more than 250 papers on this research, and he has twice won the National Research Council/US National Committee for Rock Mechanics Award for Research in Rock Mechanics (1978, 1991). He is Co-Editor-in-Chief of the premier journal in his field, Engineering Fracture Mechanics. Dr. Ingraffea was named one of TIME Magazine's "People Who Mattered" in 2011.
