In July 2011, the Nantucket Historical Association (NHA) will unveil an original short film showcasing Nantucket's natural beauty and its significant role in global history. Written and produced by Emmy award-winning filmmaker Ric Burns, Nantucket will serve as a transformative gateway experience for today's island visitor. It chronicles the vibrancy of Nantucket's history, from its original Wampanoag Native American population and early Quaker culture to its international significance as the whaling capital of the world and eventual rebirth as an art and resort colony.
The film is narrated by actress Barbara Feldon, known for her role as Agent 99 in the "Get Smart" series from the 1960's. It includes commentary by historians, islanders, and writers including New York Times best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick, all of whom share personal stories and unique island insight.
After a free community film premiere on July 2, this 26-minute film will be shown twice daily at the Nantucket Whaling Museum, 13 Broad Street, throughout the summer and beyond.

Ric Burns (born 1955) is an American documentary filmmaker and writer. He has written, directed and produced historical documentaries for nearly 20 years, beginning with his collaboration on the celebrated PBS series The Civil War (1990), which he produced with his older brother Ken Burns and wrote with Geoffrey C. Ward.
Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Burns moved to Ann Arbor, Michigan at an early age, and attended Columbia University and Cambridge University, breaking from his graduate work to join his brother on the production of the Civil War series. Since founding Steeplechase Films in 1989, he has directed several programs for WGBH Boston's American Experience, including Coney Island (1991). He also wrote and directed The Donner Party (1992).
In 1995, Burns wrote, directed, and co-produced The Way West. In April 2002, Burns completed Ansel Adams, a co-production of Steeplechase Films and Sierra Club Productions for American Experience.
Burns is probably best known for his series New York: A Documentary Film, which premiered nationally on PBS. The eight-part, seventeen-and-a-half-hour film chronicles the city’s rise from a tiny Dutch trading post through its continuing preeminence as an economic and cultural capital of the world.

Rachel Anne Maddow (pronounced /ˈmædoʊ/; born April 1, 1973) is an American television host, political commentator, and author. Maddow hosts a nightly television show, The Rachel Maddow Show, on MSNBC. Her syndicated talk radio program of the same name aired on Air America Radio. Maddow is the first openly gay anchor of a prime-time news program in the United States.
Asked about her political views by the Valley Advocate, Maddow replied, "I'm undoubtedly a liberal, which means that I'm in almost total agreement with the Eisenhower-era Republican party platform."
Maddow was born in Castro Valley, California. Her father, Robert B. "Bob" Maddow, is a former United States Air Force captain who resigned his commission the year before her birth and found civilian work as a lawyer for the East Bay Municipal Utility District. Her mother, Elaine Maddow (née Gosse), is a school program administrator from Newfoundland, Canada. She has one older brother, David. Her father is of Russian and Dutch descent and her mother is of English and Irish ancestry. Maddow's mother was raised a strict Roman Catholic, and Maddow herself grew up in a community that her mother has described as "very conservative." Maddow was a competitive athlete and played three sports in high school. Referencing John Hughes films, she describes herself in high school as "a cross between the jock and the antisocial girl."

New York was originally a Dutch trading post, Neu Amsterdam, until it was taken over by the British and given by King Charles II to his brother, the Duke of York. Monday’s episode, The Country And The City, covers the period from 1609-1825, as New York’s importance as a trading hub saw it grow to a sprawling city that played a crucial role in the War of Independence. Conflict touched the city again with the Civil War draft riots, covered on Tuesday with Order and Disorder (1825-1865), which also details the growth of the city with an influx of German and Irish immigrants. On Wednesday, Sunshine and Shadow (1865-1898), highlights an age of prosperity for the city, but one which brought greater disparity of wealth and political corruption. Thursday’s episode, The Power and the People (1898-1914) heralds a new century with the arrival of over 10 million immigrants. Skyscrapers went up and the plight of the poor led to new legislation for the whole of the US. The series ends with Cosmopolis (1914-1931), which takes in black culture, the jazz era, prohibition, booming wealth and the stock market crash of 1929. But even as the poor scraped a living, a symbol of hope rose in the shape of the Empire State Building.

Tuesday’s schedule of Christmas week looks at aspects of social change in America during the twentieth century.
Two two-part documentaries by Ric Burns (yes, Ken’s brother)
trace the history of New York through a turbulent period. New
York: City of Tomorrow covers the years 1931-1940, a period of
immense change for the city and the nation as Franklin D
Roosevelt’s New Deal programme of public works helped America
spend and build its way out of the Depression. New York: The City
And The World focuses on the postwar years up to 2000, as the
city benefited from new trade deals and rising numbers of skilled
immigrants, many of them refugees from the war in Europe. New
York grew in scale and stature to become a symbol of Western
culture and commerce. The Italian Americans reveals how the
unique qualities of one immigrant group’s experience have shaped
and challenged America. The four-part series begins in the 1880s
as the first generation of Italian immigrants arrived on American
soil, gradually establishing themselves despite initial hostility. Many
returned to Italy, but those who made America their home have
gradually left their mark on the American landscape as they have
assumed positions of political, social, and cultural influence.
