Coal Mines Documentary
The goal of coal mining is to obtain coal from the ground. Coal is valued for its energy content, and, since the 1880s, has been widely used to generate electricity. Steel and cement industries use coal as a fuel for extraction of iron from iron ore and for cement production. In the United States, United Kingdom, and South Africa, a coal mine and its structures are a colliery. In Australia, "colliery" generally refers to an underground coal mine. Coal mining has had many developments over the recent years, from the early days of men tunneling, digging and manually extracting the coal on carts to large open cut and long wall mines. Mining at this scale requires the use of draglines, trucks, conveyor, jacks and shearers. The Industrial Revolution, which began in Britain in the 18th century, and later spread to continental Europe and North America, was based on the availability of coal to power steam engines. International trade expanded exponentially when coal-fed steam engines were built for the railways and steamships. The new mines that grew up in the 19th century depended on men and children to work long hours in often dangerous working conditions.[1] There were many coalfields, but the oldest were in Newcastle and Durham, South Wales, Scotland, the Midlands, such as those at Coalbrookdale. The oldest continuously worked deep-mine in the United Kingdom is Tower Colliery in South Wales valleys in the heart of the South Wales coalfield. This colliery was developed in 1805, and its miners bought it out at the end of the 20th century, to prevent it from being closed. Tower Colliery was finally closed on 25 January 2008, although production continues at the Aberpergwm drift mine owned by Walter Energy. Coal was mined in America in the early 18th century, and commercial mining started around 1730 in Midlothian, Virginia.[2] Coal-cutting machines were invented in the 1880s. Before this invention, coal was mined from underground with a pick and shovel. By 1912, surface mining was conducted with steam shovels designed for coal mining.- published: 19 Nov 2013

CSX Coal Train Knuckle Breaks Train Separates Goes Into Emergency
This is a video I made while following a CSX coal train in Plant City Florida along Sydney Rd heading towards Tampa Florida and it's final destination, the big bend power plant (Teco Energy) in Apollo Beach Florida. While following and stopping to video the train to go by at the Sydney Dover Road railroad crossing in Sydney Florida, the 63rd car on the train had it's knuckle broken and the train separated in front of me going into a emergency. I picked up the conductor and drove him back to where the train separated and helped him fix it and drove him back to his locomotive and then he was on his way. I guess I was at the right place at the right time.- published: 22 Aug 2013

The grisly discovery of several corpses is made in a small town. A bloody incident during the attempt to capture the alleged murderer leaves two police officers dead and another badly injured. The surviving officer Zhang Zili is suspended from duty; he takes a job as a security guard at a factory. Five years later, another series of mysterious murders occurs. Aided by a former colleague, Zhang decides to investigate under his own initiative. He discovers that all the victims were connected to Wu Zhizhen, a young woman who works at a dry cleaners. Pretending to be a customer, Zhang begins to observe her and finds himself falling in love with the reticent Wu Zhizhen. One cold winter's day he makes a horrific discovery. His life now in danger, he realises it is not always possible to separate guilt from innocence. Diao Yinan's use of the characters of the ex-police officer and the femme fatale is a direct reference to classic detective films. This director's third feature is a noirish thriller in drained colours which, whilst playfully alluding to the genre, also invites us into the lives of very ordinary people. "Coal Train Blues" Coal Exports Through Columbia River Gorge and Pacific Northwest
*GO HERE* to subscribe to our Action Alerts and stay informed on how you can help fight these export proposals: http://gorgefriends.nonprofitsoapbox.com/subscribe http://gorgefriends.org/coalexport http://www.powerpastcoal.org/ At a time when China and other Asian countries are choking on pollution, Big Coal wants to send them more coal - coal mined in the American West and shipped from proposed terminals in Oregon and Washington. Up to 100 million tons of coal annually would be transported through the Columbia River Gorge, an 85-mile-long river canyon with spectacular scenery, thriving communities, and a unique diversity of plant and animal life. Johnny Cash tribute Counterfeit Cash sings a tune about the absurd, dangerous plans to make the Gorge the coal chute of the United States. All three proposals for coal terminals in the Pacific Northwest involve transporting coal through the Columbia River Gorge by rail or barge from the open pit mines of the Powder River Basin in Wyoming and Montana to terminals in Oregon and Washington for export to Asia. If coal export plans go forward, U.S. coal exports would double, resulting in 25 loaded coal trains, each more than one mile in length, moving through the Columbia River Gorge every day. Barge traffic on the Columbia River would double. Coal is transported in open-top cars and each car loses about one pound of coal dust per mile. The resulting toxic coal dust, in addition to diesel emissions from locomotive engines, pose a huge threat to air quality, water quality, plant and wildlife habitat and human health in the Gorge. Coal export does not provide any additional energy to our community and it comes at a terrible cost to our health, environment and public safety. The good news is that an inspiring grassroots campaign against coal exports has gathered strength over the past two years, uniting citizens, elected officials, business and faith leaders through community groups and a number of organizations, including Friends of the Columbia Gorge, within the POWER PAST COAL coalition. Together, we're raising awareness about these short-sighted, reckless plans, shifting public opinion after a slick, big-money PR campaign by coal companies had set the early agenda, and drawing record numbers of public comments to state regulatory agencies tasked with reviewing the coal terminal proposals. Coal export opponents go into 2014 with momentum, but Big Coal's not about to stop trying to carry out its big plans. We hope you'll watch, watch again, take some time to learn about the issue and join us in the fight stop the coal trains in their tracks. As "the real fake Johnny Cash" sings in this unique, clever take on the classic "Folsom Prison Blues": "If we don't pull together, we'll always hear the sound of clicking, clacking coal trains, Pacific Northwest bound."
