A 7.1 magnitude earthquake hits Cebu, the economic and political hub of the central Philippines, killing at least 73. Philippines Earthquake: At Least 73 Dead Philippine quake death toll rises to 73 7.2 magnitude earthquake rattles Philippines, 32 killed 32 dead as major quake hits Philippine tourist islands Damaged Bohol churches are National Treasures; NCCA urges protection of sites At least 73 people have died after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the Philippines. Fifteen of the fatalities were in Cebu, the political and economic hub of the central Philippines, civil defence office spokesman Reynaldo Balido told reporters. Sixteen other fatalities were reported on neighbouring Bohol island. The quake struck at 8.12am local time near Balilihan, a town of about 18,000 people on Bohol, at a depth of 12 miles (20km), the United States Geological Survey reported. The town lies across a strait about 37 miles (60km) from Cebu island. Janet Maribao, a receptionist on Cebu, said: "I was fast asleep when suddenly I woke up because my bed was shaking. I was so shocked, I could do nothing but hide under the bed." Residents and tourists reported extensive damage to old churches and modern buildings, including a university, while major roads had also been torn apart. Neil Sanchez, the head of Cebu's disaster management office, said: "Communication lines are quite difficult here. "Even the disaster risk reduction management office has been damaged. We had to move elsewhere." Cebu hosts the country's busiest port and largest airport outside of the capital Manila. It also has a major ship building industry. The earthquake was followed by at least four aftershocks measuring more than 5.0 in magnitude. However, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre did not issue a Pacific-wide tsunami threat. The Philippines lies on the so-called Pacific Ring of Fire, a chain of islands that are prone to quakes and volcanic eruptions. The deadliest recorded natural disaster in the Philippines occurred in 1976, when a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastated the Moro Gulf on the southern island of Mindanao. Between 5,000 and 8,000 people were killed, according to official estimates. [Uncensored Footage] More than 10,000 feared dead in typhoon Haiyan ravaged Philippines
TACLOBAN, Philippines: The death toll from a super typhoon that decimated entire towns in the Philippines could soar well over 10,000, authorities warned Sunday, making it the country's worst recorded natural disaster. The horrifying estimates came as rescue workers appeared overwhelmed in their efforts to help countless survivors of Super Typhoon Haiyan, which sent tsunami-like waves and merciless winds rampaging across a huge chunk of the archipelago on Friday. Hundreds of police and soldiers were deployed to contain looters in Tacloban, the devastated provincial capital of Leyte, while the United States announced it had responded to a Philippine government appeal and would send military help. "Tacloban is totally destroyed. Some people are losing their minds from hunger or from losing their families," high school teacher Andrew Pomeda, 36, told AFP, as he warned of the increasing desperation of survivors. "People are becoming violent. They are looting business establishments, the malls, just to find food, rice and milk... I am afraid that in one week, people will be killing from hunger." Authorities were struggling to even understand the sheer magnitude of the disaster, let alone react to it, with the regional police chief for Leyte saying 10,000 people were believed to have died in that province alone. "We had a meeting last night with the governor and, based on the government's estimates, initially there are 10,000 casualties (dead)," Chief Superintendent Elmer Soria told reporters in Tacloban. "About 70 to 80 percent of the houses and structures along the typhoon's path were destroyed." On the neighbouring island of Samar, a local disaster chief said 300 people were killed in the small town of Basey. He added another 2,000 were missing there and elsewhere on Samar, which was one of the first areas to be hit when Haiyan swept in from the Pacific Ocean with maximum sustained winds of 315 kilometres (195 miles) an hour. Dozens more people were confirmed killed in other flattened towns and cities across a 600-kilometre stretch of islands through the central Philippines. The Philippines endures a seemingly never-ending pattern of deadly typhoons, earthquakes, volcano eruptions and other natural disasters. This is because it is located along a typhoon belt and the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. However, if the feared death toll of above 10,000 is correct, Haiyan would be the deadliest natural disaster ever recorded in the Philippines. The previous deadliest disaster in the Philippines occurred in 1976, when a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 7.9 earthquake devastated the Moro Gulf on the southern Philippine island of Mindanao, killing between 5,000 and 8,000 people. Haiyan's maximum sustained wind speeds made it the strongest typhoon in the world this year, and one of the most powerful ever recorded. Witnesses in Tacloban recalled waves up to five metres (16 feet) high surging inland, while aerial photos showed entire neighbourhoods destroyed with trees and buildings flattened by storm surges that reached deep inland. "The effects are very similar to what I have seen in a tsunami rather than a typhoon," the Philippine country director of the World Food Programme, Praveen Agrawal, who visited Tacloban, told AFP. "All the trees are bent over, the bark has been stripped off, houses have been damaged. In many cases they have collapsed." President Benigno Aquino said while visiting Tacloban that looting had emerged as a major concern, after only 20 out of 390 of the city's police officers turned up for work following the typhoon. "So we will send about 300 police and soldiers to take their place and bring back peace and order," he told reporters in Tacloban. "Tonight, an armoured vehicle will arrive and our armed forces will display the strength of the state to put a stop to this looting." As the scale of the disaster began to emerge, an international aid effort began to ratchet up. - AFP/xq- published: 11 Nov 2013

[Uncensored Footage] Philippine quake deaths rise to 93, CEBU, Philippines
CEBU, Philippines - A powerful earthquake killed at least 93 people in the Philippines Tuesday as it generated landslides that buried homes, triggered terrified stampedes and destroyed historic churches. Fifteen of the confirmed fatalities were in Cebu, the country's second most important city and a gateway to some of its most beautiful beaches, the national disaster agency reported. The 7.1-magnitude quake killed another 77 people in the neighbouring island of Bohol, famed for its rolling "Chocolate Hills", while one other person died on nearby Siquijor, which attracts tourists with its pristine white sands. "I was thrown to the ground by the strength of the quake. Broken glass rained on me," Elmo Alinsunorin, who was on duty as a guard for a government tax office in Cebu, told AFP. "I thought I was going to die." Authorities said the death toll could still climb, with officials struggling to assess the extent of the damage in the worst-hit areas of Bohol where roads remained impassable and power was cut at nightfall. Bohol police chief Senior Superintendent Dennis Agustin said one of the worst affected areas was the coastal town of Loon, where at least 18 people were killed by landslides that buried houses along large stretches of highway. Loon is about 20 kilometres (12 miles) from where the epicentre of the quake struck at just after 8:00am (0000 GMT). It faces a narrow strait of water, with Cebu about 25 kilometres away on the other side. Cebu, with a population of 2.5 million people, is the political, economic, educational and cultural centre of central Philippines. It hosts the country's busiest port and the largest airport outside of the capital of Manila, which is about 600 kilometres to the north. A university, a school, shopping malls, public markets and many small buildings in Cebu sustained damage in the quake. Three of the people who died in Cebu were crushed to death in a stampede at a sports complex, according to the provincial disaster council chief, Neil Sanchez. "There was panic when the quake happened and there was a rush toward the exit," Sanchez told AFP. He said two other people were killed when part of a school collapsed on a car they had parked in, while four others died at a fish market that crumbled. Ten churches, some of which have crucial links to the earliest moments of Spanish colonial and Catholic conquest in the 1500s, were also badly damaged on Cebu and Bohol. The limestone bell tower of the Philippines' oldest church, Cebu's Basilica Minore del Santo Nino, was in ruins. Other limestone churches that were built in the 1700s and 1800s on Bohol had crumbled completely, prompting grieving for the loss of some of the Philippines' most important cultural treasures. "It is like part of the body of our country has been destroyed," Michael Charleston "Xiao" Chua, a history lecturer at De La Salle University in Manila, told AFP. Aside from its beaches, Bohol is famous for its more than 1,000 small limestone "Chocolate Hills" that turn brown during the dry season. One of the main tourist venues there, the Chocolate Hills Complex, was severely damaged, according to Delapan Ingleterra, head of a local tourist police unit. "There are huge cracks in the hotel and there was a collapse of the view deck on the second floor," Ingleterra told AFP, adding that no-one was injured at the complex. There were no reports of foreign tourists being killed anywhere in the disaster zone. Tuesday's quake was followed by hundreds of aftershocks, at least five of which measured more than 5.0 in magnitude, causing buildings to sway in Cebu. The Philippines lies on the so-called Ring of Fire, a vast Pacific Ocean region where many of Earth's earthquakes and volcanic eruptions occur. More than 100 people were left dead or missing in February last year after an earthquake struck on Negros island, about 100 kilometres from the epicentre of Tuesday's quake. Source from http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/philippine-quake-deaths/848456.html- published: 15 Oct 2013
