French Guiana / officially Guyane is an overseas region of France, consisting of a single overseas department / département d'outre-mer, or DOM located on the northern coast of South America. It has borders with two nations, Brazil and Suriname. Like the other DOMs, French Guiana is also an overseas region of France, one of the 26 regions of France. Its currency is the euro. The prefecture is Cayenne. The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. -

The addition of the adjective "French" comes from colonial times when three such colonies existed: British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname) and French Guiana. The three are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas. French Guiana was originally inhabited by a number of indigenous American people. It was settled by the French during the 17th century. After the Treaty of Paris in 1763, Louis XV sent 12,000 settlers to French Guiana to colonise the region. One and a half years later only a few hundred survived.Its infamous Île du Diable (Devil's Island) was the site of penal settlements from 1852 until 1951. More than 70,000 French convicts were deported to French Guiana between 1852 and 1939. In 1809 a Portuguese-British naval squadron took French Guiana for the Portuguese Empire. With the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1814 the region was handed back to the French, though a Portuguese presence remained until 1817. A border dispute with Brazil arose in the late nineteenth century over a vast area of jungle, leading to the short-lived pro-French independent state of Counani in the disputed territory and some fighting between settlers, before the dispute was resolved largely in favour of Brazil by the arbitration of the Swiss government. In 1946, French Guiana became an overseas department of France. The 1970s saw the settlement of Hmong refugees from Laos. A movement for increased autonomy from France gained some momentum in the 1970s and 1980s, but has since abated.

Its 83,534 km2 (32,253 sq mi) area has a very low population density of less than 3 inhabitants per km2, with half of its 239,450 people in 2012[1] living in the metropolitan area of Cayenne, its capital. By land area, it is by far the largest overseas region of France. As an oversea region, it is inside the European Union. The addition of the adjective "French" in English comes from colonial times when five such colonies existed (The Guianas), namely from west to east: Spanish Guiana (now Guayana Region in Venezuela), British Guiana (now Guyana), Dutch Guiana (now Suriname), French Guiana, and Portuguese Guiana (now Amapá, a state in far northern Brazil). French Guiana and the two larger countries to the north and west, Guyana and Suriname, are still often collectively referred to as the Guianas and comprise one large shield landmass. A large part of the department's economy derives from the presence of the Guiana Space Centre, now the European Space Agency's primary launch site near the equator. Suriname is not as yet a highly seasoned tourism destination, such as those one can find in the wider Caribbean. Most visitors who travel from abroad to our country have close relatives living here, or were born in Suriname. However this trend has changed, rapidly during the last two decades. According to statistical data provided by the Suriname Tourism Foundation, overall tourist arrivals over the past years noted a significant increase from 60,000 visitors in 2002 to more than 150,000 visitors in 2006 and 175.000 in 2009. The number increased even more in 2010, when 205,001 visitors were registered. More and more focused initiatives have been taken to improve the tourism sector while high standards of professionalism were introduced. For example, owners of warungs, the cozy small typical Indonesian food stands along the East West road, took a French language course so as to better communicate with their clients from French Guyana and offer them better service. Moreover, tour guides are trained in wildlife knowledge, in order to be able to point out various species of flora and fauna to the people under their guidance. As regards accommodation, at present the number of apartments and small hotels is 253; there is a wide range of possibilities, varying from basic and adventurous to very comfortable. Tourists don't have to bathe in the river or sleep in a hammock if they do not want to. There are choices now -- hot waters, water closets, comfortable beds.

Suriname is a big country with a small population. Most of the country consist of jungle. Entry from: Paramaribo, Suriname Entry Title: "Journeys into the interior of Suriname (2)" Entry: "Coesewijne, or Swimming with Caiman Peter writes: Gunsi was delightful, but hopeless for seeing wildlife, so we decided to take a tour to the uninhabited interior of the country. These tours are quite expensive, but since uninhabited areas are not well served by public transport they are the only practical way to go. One of the tours advertised in our guesthouse as 'adventurous' took our fancy, and after some hurried phoning around by Alex at the guesthouse, we found ourselves roaring out of town towards the Coesewijne National Park in an old but still impressive Nissan Patrol 4x4. The car, stuffed with paddles, tents, fishing rods, cans of petrol and so forth, belonged to Henk, a large, confident, black guy, who spoke English (when he remembered he should because of my lack of Dutch) with a strong Caribbean accent. He drove as fast as possible, given the condition of the 'roads', playing loud music that he often sang along with, more or less. When not 'singing' he kept up a pretty continuous monologue in sranan tongo (clearly a man entirely comfortable with the sound of his own voice), and occasionally gave us interesting nuggets of information about the geology of the landscape, the history of the region and so forth. The long-suffering recipient of Henk's no doubt cogent opinions was Jay, our tour leader, a much younger guy of evidently hindustani descent. Jay told us that he usually works at one of the main tourist centres, and that this was his day off; we found out only later that he was a last-minute substitute guide, whose lack of experience caused him some problems during the trip. Most of his siblings are in Holland, with the exception of his 13-year-old younger brother, whom he's paying to keep in school (which is only compulsory until 12). Without Jay's support, the brother would have to find work himself, at the expense of his education. Our first stop (other than to pick up supplies) was at an Amerindian village called Bigi Poika, to pick up our local guide. The layout and architecture were quite different to the Maroon villages we had seen earlier. Houses were spaced out along the road, each one with a covered exterior space, used for both work and recreation, where we often saw people relaxing in hammocks. Everything was well built and for the most part in good repair, in contrast to Gunsi, where the huts were mostly very small and frequently quite dilapidated (though termites had a lot to do with this). We pulled up at one compound, but found out that our guide wasn't quite ready because of caring for his sick mother, so we went on to the end of the village, where Henk took us for a walk along a decaying causeway to a lovely creek occupied by small boys playing in the water. After half an hour we went back and collected our guide, a short, stocky older man called 'Baba' (reflecting his grandfather status), who squeezed onto the back seat with us, making the rest of the car ride quite uncomfortable. However we didn't go far immediately, since we were taken to see the traditional process of making cassava bread under one of the covered spaces. Two women were efficiently peeling and scraping cassavas, ready to be grated (which they now do with a petrol-powered machine), squeezed in long bag woven from reeds and pounded into flour in a large pestle. Baba demonstrated the pounding action to the great amusement of the two women, either because his technique was poor or perhaps just because this is traditionally female activity (Baba told us that the men concentrate on growing the cassavas). Another woman was baking oval flatbreads over a fire, which were then cut in half and packaged, with three half-breads in each plastic bag. Suriname, officially the Republic of Suriname (Dutch: Republiek Suriname, Dutch pronunciation: [ˌrepyˈblik ˌsyriˈnaːmə]), is a country in northern South America. It borders French Guiana to the east, Guyana to the west, Brazil to the south, and the Atlantic Ocean to the north. Suriname was first colonized by the British, and captured by the Dutch in 1667, who governed it as the colony of Suriname until 1954. The country of Suriname achieved independence from the Kingdom of the Netherlands, in which Suriname, the Netherlands Antilles, and the Netherlands itself cooperated on a basis of equality since 1954, on 25 November 1975.
At just under 165,000 km2 (64,000 sq mi) Suriname is the smallest sovereign state in South America (French Guiana comprises less territory, but is French territory). It has an estimated population of approximately 560,000, most of whom live on the country's north coast, where the capital Paramaribo is located.
The name Suriname may derive from a Taino (Arawak-speaking) group called "Surinen" who first inhabited the region prior to European arrival.
