Walkin' in the Wind: People blown over in streets as Storm Ivar hits Norway
People christmas shopping in downtown Aalesund had troubles crossing the street today. The storm "Ivar" was blowing things and people around and police had to assist people in moving around. One man blew off the sidewalk and into the street in an intersection downtown Aalesund earlier. An ambulance was required and the police is now present in the streets, to follow the development and help out where needed. The storm is continuing towards Trondelag where 20 000 people now have lost power, and buses and boats are suspended. The police are also urging people to stay away from the downtown area in Trondheim. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews.fans Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 13 Dec 2013

Russian armed forces alert prompts Ukrainian mobilisation
The sound of Kremlin sabre-rattling is being clearly heard in Kyiv as 150,000 Russian troops, hundreds of tanks and planes perform military exercises close to the Ukrainian border. Forces in Russia's Western and Central sectors have been placed on "combat ready" alert, and the sectors' air wings have been mobilised to fly patrols. Ukraine has warned Russia that any straying over the border during the manoeuvres will be considered as an act of agression, and warnings over Russian intervention i... Cascades of ice: beautiful images of frozen Niagara falls
Parts of the Niagara Falls, between the United States and Canada were frozen on Monday (March 3) as a strong winter storm hit the U.S. East Coast with freezing rain, snow and near-record cold, canceling about 2,900 flights, shutting down Washington and closing schools and local governments. The sub freezing temperatures of 0 degrees (minus 18 Celsius) at Niagara Falls although did not put off tourists visiting the world famous destination to enjoy a spectacular view of a frozen Niagara Falls. The latest in a series of weather systems to pummel the winter-weary eastern United States, the storm dumped about 4 inches of snow on the U.S. capital by early evening as it swept from the Mississippi Valley to the Atlantic coast, the National Weather Service said. Temperatures would be about 30 degrees Fahrenheit (15 degrees Celsius) below normal as a cold front settled in from Great Plains to the Atlantic coast, Instead of the normal high of around 50 Fahrenheit (10 Celsius), temperatures in the region were plunging into the teens Fahrenheit (minus 8 Celsius), said Brian Hurley, a weather service meteorologist. Freeze warnings were in place from the Canadian border into Texas. The main electric grid operator for most of Texas issued a conservation alert due to expected higher demand, and heavy sleet left about 30,000 homes and businesses in Memphis, Tennessee, out of power, Memphis Light, Gas and Water reported. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 05 Mar 2014

Euronews correspondent in Kiev: 'We filmed 10 dead bodies' near Independence square
Our correspondent Maria Korenyuk was in central Kyiv as the first clashes broke out, early on Thursday morning. She sent us an eyewitness account of how Ukraine's truce was shattered. "Thick smoke is constantly rising above Independence Square. The situation is very tense. Ambulances are driving non-stop in both directions," she said. "We have talked to people who have been on the main square. They don't look afraid, but they can't stop crying. "Near one of the hotels close to Independence... Ukraine divided over Russian intervention in Crimea euronews, world news
People gathered in front of the Crimean parliament in Simferopol on Saturday as armed men patrolled the area nearby. Ukraine's prime minister, Arseniy Yatsenyuk, has appealed to Russia to halt military movements in the autonomous republic and says Ukraine "will not give in" to Russian "provocations". But Sergei Aksyonov, the prime minister of Crimea has called on Russia for help. "Recognising my responsibility for the lives and security of the people, I ask Russia's President Vladimir Putin to offer assistance in providing peace and order in the territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea," he told members of the press. The Russian foreign ministry says it is "extremely concerned" about the situation in the region and won't ignore the request for help. It added that recent developments in Crimea confirm the "desire of prominent political circles in Kyiv" to destabilise the situation on the peninsula. On Saturday, Ukraine's defence minister said Russia had "recently" brought 6,000 additional personnel into Ukraine and the Ukrainian military is on high alert in the Crimea region. Meanwhile, the Russian foreign ministry has also announced that Russia's Consulate General in Crimea will give out Russian passports to servicemen in Ukraine's controversial and now-disbanded Berkut riot police. Protesters in Ukraine had accused the force of firing live bullets at demonstrators, killing dozens of people.- published: 01 Mar 2014

Samba! Rio's extravagant Carnival in full swing
Extraterrestrial toucan birds, neon green spacemen waving Brazilian flags and legions of scantily clad women and men dancing a furious samba opened the final round of Rio de Janeiro's extravagant Carnival parades on Monday night. The Mocidade samba school was the first to parade down Rio's Sambadrome, a 700-metre-long (0.4 miles) avenue lined with grandstands, filled with cheering spectators. The annual spectacle pits the city's 12 best samba schools against one another in ornate parades that include over 2,500 participants each and cost more than 3 (m) million US dollars to produce. The efforts are judged in 10 categories, with a winner laying claim to nothing more than a year's worth of bragging rights. The enormous effort is largely made by Rio's poorest citizens. The samba schools are mostly located in impoverished neighborhoods, and armies of volunteers from nearby slums spend nine months or more sewing, practicing the samba songs and dance moves, all for an 80-minute presentation before well-imbibed spectators. euronews: the most watched news channel in Europe Subscribe! http://eurone.ws/10ZCK4a euronews is available in 14 languages: http://eurone.ws/17moBCU In English: Website: http://www.euronews.com/news Facebook: http://www.facebook.com/euronews Twitter: http://twitter.com/euronews Google+: http://google.com/+euronews VKontakte: http://vk.com/en.euronews- published: 04 Mar 2014

Ukraine's acting president demands Russia stops 'provocations' in Crimea
Ukraine's acting president Oleksandr Turchynov has urged Russia to stop "provocations" in Crimea and to pull back military forces. "They are provoking us into a military conflict. According to our intelligence, they are trying to implement the scenario that is very similar to Abkhazia," he said, referring to Russia's intervention in Georgia over breakaway Abkhazia and South Ossetia, which have large ethnic Russian populations. Ukraine: Emotions run high in Crimea's Simferopol
Crimea has become the focus in a crisis which has wide-ranging implications. For many Russians, Crimea has a strong emotional resonance. For Ukraine, its loss would be an enormous blow. In Simferopol, where armed men are stationed in the streets, feelings run deep. "For me, it's most important to keep peace here. There is no difference -- in Russia or in Ukraine. The most important thing is that they don't put pressure on us," says Yuriy. "Some politicians say that the Russian language is no... He passed away in his home city of Izhevsk near the Ural mountains, where his gun is still made, reports Russian state news agency Itar-Tass.* His name became iconic, like Colt or Gatling before him, because of an instrument of death; the iconic AK-47 assault rifle, better known as the Kalashnikov. Mikhail Kalashnikov was born in 1919 in Kouria, the 17th of 19 children in a Kulak farming family. Deported by Stalin, who seized the land for collectivisation, little Mikhail lived in Siberia until age 11. He became a tank driver and was injured in 1941 as the Germans invaded. Convalescing in hospital he doodled a small, rapid, and reliable assault rifle. The state picked up on his design and began production of the Avtomat Kalashnikova in 1947 in the Ijmach factory in Izhevsk, in the Ural mountains. It was a huge success. More than 100 million are thought to be in use around the world today. Kalashnikov said: "Everything that is complicated is useless; everything useful is simple. That's always been my motto." His assault rifle has become Russia's most famous brand, synonymous with 'made in Russia', and a quality standard so recognised it has been much imitated and forged. The self-taught engineer complained about this on a visit to the late Hugo Chavez. "There are countries that make Kalashnikov guns without licence. That is plain theft. It is completely illegal," he said. Kalashnikov never felt responsible for unlawful or terrorist acts committed by men using his weapon. That was the fault of others, he repeated. "Any weapon should only be in the hands of armies to defend their countries, and the fact that there are so many weapons around has nothing to do with the designer. It is the fault of the politicians." But he was proud of the legendary status accorded his creation. He claimed even the Americans would have preferred it in Vietnam. "I saw American soldiers throwing away their M16 rifles and picking up the soviet AK-47 rifles. But it did not stop there. I (saw) it in Iraq again. In bad (climate) conditions, the M16 rifle does not work properly."
