A developing low pressure system off the east coast is expected to push an easterly swell through with 1.5m to 2m waves expected on Friday, rising to over 3m by Sunday.
Port Macquarie-Hastings Council lifeguard Grant Hudson warns swimmers to think before entering the water and consult with lifeguards on patrolled beaches about the conditions.
Mr Hudson said submerged rocks along the frontage of Town Beach combined with the heavy swell and shoreline whitewash may force lifeguards to close the beach until conditions improve.
"We are quite concerned about this because we haven't had a swell like this for quite a while. It will be very powerful and we are asking everyone to be careful," Mr Hudson said.
"And because this is an easterly swell, all beaches along the coast will be affected this weekend."
He urged swimmers to avoid Town Beach and opt for one of the region's other patrolled beaches and always swim between the red and yellow flags. Lifeguards will be on patrol between 9am and 4.30pm.
