New York City Ballet on September 11, 2001 On September 11, 2001, the New York City Ballet was on a European tour that had taken the company from Edinburgh, Scotland to Athens, Greece and finally to Parma, Italy, where the company was scheduled to perform as part of the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Reggio that evening. As news of the events unfolding at home in New York began to make its way to the dancers of the New York City Ballet, the sense of fear and loss became more and more overwhelming, and Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins ultimately decided to cancel the evening's performance. By curtain time, the sold-out audience had arrived at the Teatro Reggio, and stood in silence and mourned with the Company and the rest of the world. Martins addressed the audience from the stage, saying "We came here to dance, it is what we do, but our hearts are breaking and it is simply not possible for us to perform this evening. But we will be back tomorrow, and we will be honored to perform for all of you then." NYCB did perform at the Teatro Reggio the following evening, September 12th, 2001, and 12 years to the day after, New York City Ballet offers NEW BEGINNINGS, which features an international team of collaborators, including director Davi Russo who was born and raised in New York City, British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, American dancer Maria Kowroski, Danish dancer Ask la Cour, and a ballet set to a score by the Estonian composer Arvo Part, which provides a moving backdrop to a film of profound and powerful beauty.

Giselle is the quintessential Romantic ballet. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Although the choreography and designs have undergone many changes over the years, the essence of Giselle remains the same. The Royal Ballet's production uses Marius Petipa's classic version (after the original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli), first staged in St Petersburg in 1884. The role of Giselle provides a dancer with many technical and dramatic challenges, from the character's early love to her poignant descent into madness and final gesture of forgiveness from beyond the grave. The first act of the ballet is filled with historical detail and rustic colour. By contrast, the second act (known as the White Act) plunges the audience into an eerie moonlit forest haunted by the ethereal Wilis -- vengeful spirits of young brides who died before their wedding day. With its combination of memorable story and exquisite choreography, Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet.

Plot
A dramatic, energetic adaptation of Heinz Spoerli's ballet based on Grieg's Peer Gynt by the Zurich ballet. Marijn Rademaker is excellent as the title character, clearly telegraphing the emotional range required. Each of the characters and the dramatic scenes are supported by the orchestral passages and songs provided by Grieg; some spoken word passages extracted from the Ibsen play.

Plot
In the sorrow of exile, a group of Argentinians in Paris seek solace and connection to their culture by staging a set of tangos. The film alternates between their vibrant rehearsals and their circumscribed lives in low-rent apartments, underemployed, fitfully communicating with families back home, trying to make do with what they hope are only temporary arrangements in a foreign land.

Plot
Nightclub entertainer Jean Clery has just become engaged to Lili, his attractive psychoanalyst. Meanwhile, the nightclub where he works is being used by a counterfeit ring, and Paris police suspect owner Paul Latour of being the ringleader. Finding it expedient to leave town, Paul leaves his "baby" daughter with Jean...who discovers too late that she's a wild, carefree, shapely sex-kitten with a talent for getting Jean into amusing scrapes.

New York City Ballet on September 11, 2001
On September 11, 2001, the New York City Ballet was on a European tour that had taken the company from Edinburgh, Scotland to Athens, Greece and finally to Parma, Italy, where the company was scheduled to perform as part of the Verdi Festival at the Teatro Reggio that evening. As news of the events unfolding at home in New York began to make its way to the dancers of the New York City Ballet, the sense of fear and loss became more and more overwhelming, and Ballet Master in Chief Peter Martins ultimately decided to cancel the evening's performance.
By curtain time, the sold-out audience had arrived at the Teatro Reggio, and stood in silence and mourned with the Company and the rest of the world. Martins addressed the audience from the stage, saying "We came here to dance, it is what we do, but our hearts are breaking and it is simply not possible for us to perform this evening. But we will be back tomorrow, and we will be honored to perform for all of you then."
NYCB did perform at the Teatro Reggio the following evening, September 12th, 2001, and 12 years to the day after, New York City Ballet offers NEW BEGINNINGS, which features an international team of collaborators, including director Davi Russo who was born and raised in New York City, British choreographer Christopher Wheeldon, American dancer Maria Kowroski, Danish dancer Ask la Cour, and a ballet set to a score by the Estonian composer Arvo Part, which provides a moving backdrop to a film of profound and powerful beauty.

Giselle is the quintessential Romantic ballet. It transformed the dance world when it was first performed in Paris in 1841 and remains at the centre of the classical repertory. Although the choreography and designs have undergone many changes over the years, the essence of Giselle remains the same. The Royal Ballet's production uses Marius Petipa's classic version (after the original choreography by Jules Perrot and Jean Coralli), first staged in St Petersburg in 1884.
The role of Giselle provides a dancer with many technical and dramatic challenges, from the character's early love to her poignant descent into madness and final gesture of forgiveness from beyond the grave. The first act of the ballet is filled with historical detail and rustic colour. By contrast, the second act (known as the White Act) plunges the audience into an eerie moonlit forest haunted by the ethereal Wilis -- vengeful spirits of young brides who died before their wedding day. With its combination of memorable story and exquisite choreography, Giselle is the perfect way to discover classical ballet.

Ballet is a type of performance dance, that originated in the Italian Renaissance courts of the 15th century, and which was further developed in France and Russia as a concert dance form. The early portions preceded the invention of the proscenium stage and were presented in large chambers with most of the audience seated on tiers or galleries on three sides of the dance floor. It has since become a highly technical form of dance with its own vocabulary. It is primarily performed with the accompaniment of classical music and has been influential as a form of dance globally. Ballet has been taught in ballet schools around the world, which use their own cultures and societies to inform the art. Ballet dance works (ballets) are choreographed and performed by trained artists, include mime and acting, and are set to music (usually orchestral but occasionally vocal). It is a poised style of dance that incorporates the foundational techniques for many other dance forms. This genre of dance is very hard to master and requires much practice. It is best known in the form of late Romantic ballet or Ballet Blanc, which preoccupies itself with the female dancer to the exclusion of almost all else, focusing on pointe work, flowing, precise acrobatic movements, and often presenting the dancers in the conventional short white French tutu. Later developments include expressionist ballet, neoclassical ballet, and elements of modern dance.

Natalia Petrovna Osipova (Russian: Наталья Петровна Осипова) (born 18 May 1986 in Moscow, Russia) is an Russian ballet dancer currently performing with the Mikhailovsky Theater in St. Petersburg. Prior to dancing with the Mikhailovsky, Osipova danced with the Bolshoi Ballet. She cited "artistic freedom" as her reason for leaving.
From 1996 to 2004 she trained at the Moscow State Academy of Choreography where she studied with Marina Kotova and Marina Leonova. Upon graduation from the Academy, she was hired by the Bolshoi Ballet as a member of the corps de ballet. In 2005, she danced the part of Kitri in Alexei Fadeyechev's production of Don Quixote to much critical acclaim After this solo debut she danced many more soloist parts, including the title role in the premiere of Johan Kobborg's production of La Sylphide. She was named one of "25 to Watch" by Dance Magazine in 2007. In 2009, she received the Prix Benois de la Danse.
In May 2010, Osipova was promoted to a principal dancer after a performance of Don Quixote. In June 2010, she joined American Ballet Theatre for their Metropolitan Opera House season. She danced Don Quixote, with José Manuel Carreño, Sleeping Beauty and Romeo and Juliet with David Hallberg. A week before her performance in The Sleeping Beauty, Osipova was mugged outside the MET. She suffered minor bruises, lost only a pair of pointe shoes and a small hammer used to shape them, but was fine other than that and was still able to perform.

Don Quixote (
/ˌdɒn kiːˈhoʊtiː/; Spanish: [ˈdoŋ kiˈxote] (
listen)), fully titled The Ingenious Gentleman Don Quixote of La Mancha (Spanish: El ingenioso hidalgo don Quixote de la Mancha), is a novel written by Miguel de Cervantes. The novel follows the adventures of Alonso Quijano, who reads too many chivalric novels, and sets out to revive chivalry under the name of Don Quixote. He recruits a simple farmer, Sancho Panza, as his squire, who frequently deals with Don Quixote's rhetorical orations on antiquated knighthood with a unique Earthy wit. He is met by the world as it is, initiating themes like Intertextuality, Realism, Metatheatre and Literary Representation.
Published in two volumes a decade apart, in 1605 and 1615, Don Quixote is considered the most influential work of literature from the Spanish Golden Age and the entire Spanish literary canon. As a founding work of modern Western literature, and one of the earliest canonical novels, it regularly appears high on lists of the greatest works of fiction ever published. In one such list, Don Quixote was cited as the "best literary work ever written".

Polina Semionova, born in Moscow in 1984, is a classical ballet dancer and Principal with the Berlin State Opera. She is de facto prima ballerina and is one of the youngest dancers to achieve this particular kind of recognition.
Studying at the Bolshoi Ballet School in Moscow, Russia, she won awards in the top ballet competitions; including a gold medal at the Moscow International Ballet Competition 2001, First Prize at the Vaganova-Prix Ballet Competition in St Petersburg 2002, and Junior Prize at the Nagoya (Japan) International Ballet Competition 2002.
Graduating in 2002, Semionova joined the Ballet Staatsoper Berlin as a principal upon the invitation of Vladimir Malakhov, becoming the youngest principal in the company's history at the age of 18. She toured Japan as Malakhov's partner, the reason he had invited her to be a principal in the company. He gave her the lead roles in The Nutcracker and La Bayadère during her first season, following with the role of Tatiana in Onegin, which became her favourite role.
