Scots is the Germanic language variety spoken in Lowland Scotland and parts of Ulster (where the local dialect is known as Ulster Scots). It is sometimes called Lowland Scots to distinguish it from Scottish Gaelic, the Celtic language historically restricted to most of the Highlands, the Hebrides and Galloway after the Middle Ages.
Because there are no universally accepted criteria for distinguishing languages from dialects, scholars and other interested parties often disagree about the linguistic, historical and social status of Scots. Although a number of paradigms for distinguishing between languages and dialects do exist, these often render contradictory results. Broad Scots is at one end of a bipolar linguistic continuum, with Scottish Standard English at the other. Consequently, Scots is generally regarded as one of the ancient varieties of English, yet it has its own distinct dialects. Alternatively, Scots is sometimes treated as a distinct Germanic language, in the way Norwegian is closely linked to, yet distinct from, Danish.

The 2nd Trinity Medieval Ireland Symposium marking the 700th anniversary of the Bruce Invasion of Ireland (1315–1318)
The 2nd Trinity Medieval Ireland Symposium marks the 700th anniversary of the invasion of Ireland led by Edward, brother of Robert Bruce, Kings of Scots, by exploring the theme of The Irish–Scottish World in the Middle Ages.
Few peoples have as much in common as the Irish and the Scots. The very name ‘Scotland’ – from Scotia, the ‘land of the Scoti’ – is an ever-present reminder of that connection, because, in the Latin of the early Middle Ages, a Scotus was an Irishman, and the homeland of the Scoti was Ireland. That the name came to be applied to the northern part of Britain is testament to the strength of Irish influence there, which this Symposium explores.
The links were such that in King Robert’s famous letter to ‘his friends’, the Irish, he reminded them that they and the Scots ‘stem from one seed of birth’, and offered a permanent alliance against the English, their would-be conquerors, ‘so that our nation’ – one nation, the Scots and Irish – ‘may recover her ancient freedom’. That alliance culminated in the inauguration of his brother Edward as high-king of Ireland in the summer of 1315, which forms the cornerstone of this Symposium.
Do the origins of modern Scotland lie in Ireland? To what extent did the legacy of Colum Cille of Iona define relations between the two regions – in political, ecclesiastical, literary and artistic terms? Is the Book of Kells ‘Irish’ or ‘Scottish’? What was the impact of Viking and then Anglo-Norman attempts at conquest? Did contacts intensify with the recruitment of Hebridean galloglass by the chieftains of Gaelic Ulster and elsewhere or were ancient bonds on the wane as the Middle Ages drew to a close? These are some of the questions this Symposium of leading experts seeks to answer.
Speakers include:
Dauvit Broun • Michael Brown • Thomas Owen Clancy • Seán Duffy • Robin Frame James E. Fraser • Benjamin Hudson • Martin Macgregor • Bernard Meehan
R. Andrew McDonald • Michael Penman • Katharine Simms • Alex Woolf.

‘How British is Scotland? Britain and Scottish Independence in the Middle Ages’
Scotland’s identification with Britain has deeper roots than the union of the crowns in 1603, It can be seen as a constant element in the Scottish kingdom’s identity from early medieval times, an element that can still be recognised after the Wars of Independence. And yet Scotland was, in the same period, a self-governing and latterly a sovereign kingdom. This has the potential to offer a new perspective on the relationship between Scottish independence and Britishness.

A national referendum is to be held in Scotland on 18 September 2014 to decide whether or not Scotland is to become an independent country Scotland was an independent country from its foundation in the Early Middle Ages (traditionally 843) until 1707, with the Treaty of Union and subsequent Acts of Union. Beginning in 1603, however, the countries which formed the Union shared the same monarch when James VI of Scotland was declared King of England and Ireland, following the death of Queen Elizabeth II. The visit of King George IV to Scotland in 1822 and the subsequent rise in tartanry has been credited with reinforcing a specific sense of Scottish national identity.[dubious – discuss] This 'identity' had been regarded by many as being split between the Episcopalian and Roman Catholic-dominated Highlands and the Presbyterian-dominated Lowlands[dubious – discuss], following the Glorious Revolution in 1688, and continuing into the 18th century, through the Jacobite risings, the Act of Proscription and subsequent process of Highland Clearances by landlords. From the mid-19th century, there was a growing feeling[by whom?] that there should be devolution of control over Scottish affairs, but support for restoration of full independence was limited. The "home rule" movement for a Scottish Assembly was first taken up in 1853 by the National Association for the Vindication of Scottish Rights a body close to the Conservative Party. A key element in this movement was the comparison with Ireland, which, it was noted, received more support from the British Government than Scotland. The original movement broadened its political appeal and soon began to receive Liberal Party backing, In 1885, the Post of Secretary for Scotland and the Scottish Office were re-established to promote Scotland's interests and express its concerns to the British Parliament. In 1886, however, William Ewart Gladstone introduced the Irish Home Rule Bill. When many Scots compared what they had to the Irish offer of Home Rule, the status quo was considered inadequate. It was not regarded as an immediate constitutional priority however, particularly when the Irish Home Rule Bill was defeated in the House of Commons. By the time a Scottish Home Rule bill was first presented to parliament in 1913, its progress, along with that of the Irish Home Rule Act 1914, was interrupted by World War I and subsequently became overshadowed by the Easter Rising and Irish War of Independence. However, the Scottish Office was relocated to St. Andrew's House in Edinburgh during the 1930s. In 1921, influenced by Sinn Fin, the Scots National League formed as a body, primarily based in London, seeking Scottish independence. The League established the Scots Independent newspaper in 1926 and in 1928 it helped the Glasgow University Scottish Nationalist Association to form the National Party of Scotland (NPS), the aim of which was a separate Scottish state. One of the National Party of Scotland's founders was Hugh MacDiarmid, a poet who had begun promoting a Scottish literature. Other literary supporters included Eric Linklater and Neil Gunn while others, like John MacCormick and Robert Bontine Cunninghame Graham had Labour Party links. The NPS cooperated with the Scottish Party, a home rule organisation formed in 1932 by former members of the Conservative Party, and these merged in 1934 to form the Scottish National Party (SNP). At first, the SNP supported home rule through the establishment of a devolved Scottish Assembly within the United Kingdom, rather than all-out independence for Scotland.[citation needed]. This became the party's initial position on the constitutional status of Scotland, as a result of a compromise between the NPS, which did support independence, and the Scottish Party which was devolutionist. However, the SNP quickly reverted to the original NPS stance of

Before I actually started watching Outlander myself, all I heard from friends was, ‘sex, spanking, nudity!’ And yup, sure enough, there’s a good deal of that on the show so while talking to executive producer Ronald D. Moore and stars Caitriona Balfe, Sam Heughan and Lotte Verbeek for the mid-season premiere, I asked them how they felt about partaking in so much sexy time in front of the camera.
In case you’re an Outlander newcomer, the show isn’t all about shirtless Scots and spankings. The adaptation of the Diana Gabaldon novels centers on Claire Randall (Balfe), a married WWII nurse who travels back in time to 1743, falls for Highland warrior Jamie Fraser (Heughan), and you can probably guess what happens next. Catch Moore, Balfe, Heughan and Verbeek's thoughts on all the sex and nudity in the video interview below and be sure to keep an eye out for more Outlander coverage coming soon.

Robert the Bruce's invasion of English occupied Ireland in 1315 could have created a Celtic empire to challenge English dominance of the British Isles. This two part series explores one of history's most fascinating 'what ifs'.
In the first episode, Robert the Bruce's victory over the English at Bannockburn in 1314 did not put an end to Scotland's fight for independence. King Robert knew that his crown was not secure so he decided to open a 'second front' against the English and invade English occupied Ireland.
Robert and his brother Edward hatched an audacious plan - with the help of allies in Ulster they would unite the Scots and Irish in a powerful Celtic alliance against the English threat. In May 1315 a Scottish army landed in Ulster. The Bruce invasion looked like a great success.
The Gaelic Irish, disgruntled after 150 years of English oppression, would welcome the Scots with open arms. And at first, all went well - Edward was recognised as High King of Ireland by several leading Ulster lords. A formidable leader, he won a number of significant battles and captured English strongholds.
Was this the fulfilment of the widely believed prophecies of Merlin about a new King Arthur uniting the Celts?

Guilty Pleasures: Luxury in The Middle Ages (Full Documentary)
Luxury isn't just a question of expensive and the beautiful objects for the rich and the powerful. It has always been much more important than that, especially in the ancient and medieval worlds.
This second episode follows the clash between luxury and Christianity which convulsed medieval Europe. Luxury was a roadblock on the road to heaven, so the church was quick to condemn the jewellery, gorgeous weapons and pattern-welded swords of the early medieval world. Yet the church also had its own form of luxury, in the form of spectacular manuscripts designed to do the work of God through astonishment and display. And to some extent it worked, as by 1200 medieval boys' toys like warhorses and tournaments came to be suffused with Christian ideas of chivalry and gentility.
But by that time the growth of trade had brought new luxuries to Europe, condemned in turn by the church, like exotic spices from the East. Spicy food led to spicy conduct, said the preachers, and to the sin of lechery. But soon the Black Death paradoxically liberated luxury from the church by initiating a new world of relative luxury and consumerism - the luxury world we inhabit today.

The ancient Irish were a highly sophisticated society divided into three dominant groups: druids, farmers and warriors. Warlike and dangerous, their coasts were protected from invading Celts and Vikings by huge stone forts.
Warfare in Medieval Scotland starts at 00:10
Warfare in Medieval Scotland includes all military activity in the modern borders of Scotland, or by forces originating in the region, between the departure of the Romans in the fifth century and the adoption of the innovations of the Renaissance in the early sixteenth century.
Gaelic warfare starts at 24:00
Gaelic warfare was the type of warfare practised by the Gaelic peoples, that is the Irish, Scots and Manx, in the pre-modern period.
Much of what we know of ancient history is the history of militaries: their conquests, their movements, and their technological innovations. There are many reasons for this. Kingdoms and empires, the central units of control in the ancient world, could only be maintained through military force. Due to limited agricultural ability, there were relatively few areas that could support large communities, so fighting was common.
Weapons and armor, designed to be sturdy, tended to last longer than other artifacts, and thus a great deal of surviving artifacts recovered tend to fall in this category as they are more likely to survive. Weapons and armor were also mass-produced to a scale that makes them quite plentiful throughout history, and thus more likely to be found in archaeological digs.
