12 Animals of the Thai Lunar calendar | Thailand |
The Thai lunar calendar pronounced in Thai as ปฏิทินจันทรคติ consists of 12 animals. This is Thailand's version of the lunisolar Buddhist calendar. 13 April of the solar calendar occasions the beginning of the traditional Thai New Year (Songkran). This is the day that a year assumes the name of the next animal in the twelve-year animal cycle. As you can see in the video, the animals are: Year Chinese New Year's Day Thai beginning 13 April Animal ---- --------------- ----------------- ------ 1998 January 28 Pi Khan Goat Mouse Tiger Rabbit Snake Horse Goat Monkey chicken pig elephant- published: 20 Dec 2013

Yee Peng, Festival of Lights in Chiang Mai, North Thailand
Loy Krathong (ลอยกระทง), sometimes spelled Loy Kratong or Loi Kratong, is a colorful festival held every year on the full moon of the twelfth month in the Thai Lunar Calendar. This Thai Festival is held all over the country, but there are particularly beautiful celebrations held in Chiang Mai, Ayutthaya and Sukhothai, where the celebrations take place over several days. Celebrations are now held throughout Thailand including Bangkok, Phuket and Pattaya, as well as parts of Myanmar (Shan State) and Laos. Yee Peng In Chiang Mai the celebration is known as Yee Peng (the full moon of the second month), as the twelfth month in the Thai Lunar Calendar corresponds to the second month in the traditional calendar of the old northern Lanna kingdom. The festival features beautifully illuminated lanterns, which are either carried, displayed in houses and temples, and even launched into the night sky. Krathong which are an offering -- traditionally made out of a banana stalk and adorned with candles, incense and some money -- are floated down the rivers.- published: 01 Feb 2014

Onboard the bus were elderly worshippers returning from a Buddhist Kathin ceremony in Chiang Rai. The was passing through the Wang Nuea district of the mountainous Lampang province, en route to Chiang Mai. At around 18:30, the bus toppled into a 30-metre ravine near the Than Thong waterfall on the Phayao Wang Nura Road, likely due to failed brakes. "I can't confirm the cause, but the road is curvy," Police Colonel Somdet Tosporn told AFP from Lampang. 17 of the 21 death casualties died on the scene, many of whom are women. Rescue from the dark, sloped ravine was challenging, especially given the lack of mobile phone reception in the mountain area. The bus driver was among the injured. He is facing charges of reckless driving, and may be sentenced up to 10 years in jail. Kathin is a traditional Buddhist festival celebrated by villages in northeastern Thailand and in Laos during the eleventh month of the Thai lunar calendar. Vegetarian Festival in Chiang Mai, Thailand.
October 5 - 13, 2556 (English, Русский) The annual Vegetarian Jay Festival is held in Thailand according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar. During these nine days people are trying to keep their bodies and minds clean. They wear white clothes and follow the Buddhist principles of ahimsa or nonviolence, cleanliness and truthfulness. That also means eating vegetarian food and being sober. Another name for this event is the Nine Emperor Gods Festival. Having its origins in Chinese Buddhism, it includes traditional lion dance, mass musical parade and the process of worshiping Kwan Yin, the Goddess of compassion. The air is saturated with the chanting of Mahā Karuṇā Dhāranī mantra. These days Chinese temples are decorated with lanterns and candles and petards explode here and there. A significant part of the Jay Festival is the preparation of pad-thai in a big frying pen. This dish is a mixture of rice noodles with different ingredients such as cabbage, soya, corn etc. Famous and respected cooks are invited to participate and to distribute this food. It's an honor. Everywhere people are cooking with love and affection and it feels that they are very glad and proud of taking part in such activities. Vegetarian restaurants are widening the range of the dishes and non-veg eateries include them in their menus. Such cuisine for sure can be found under the bright-yellow boards or signs with the "jay" hieroglyph, which literally means «vegetarian». All the preparations: steaming soups, pumpkin stew, all types of noodles and so on are distributed free of charge to anyone who wants to try it. People also carry some of this food for their friends and relatives as it is considered to be auspicious and to have a purifying effect.
