A new United Nations report has found that crimes against humanity are occurring in North Korea and calls for an international tribunal to investigate and hold perpetrators to account.

The report, by a UN Commission of Inquiry appointed by the UN Human Rights Council in March 2013, recommends that the UN Security Council refer the situation in North Korea to the International Criminal Court (ICC) and that the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights carry out investigations. The three person commission, which was chaired by Australian jurist Michael Kirby, will formally present its findings to the Human Rights Council on or around March 17, 2014. The council will then consider a resolution to act on the commission\'s recommendations.

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni have launched legal action after secret recordings of them were leaked online.

Lawyers for Mr Sarkozy filed a request for an emergency injunction to prevent more transcripts from being published.

They say the recordings were made by a former aide, Patrick Buisson, without the couple\'s knowledge.

Although the transcripts are embarrassing, they are not considered too damaging, correspondents say.

Mr Sarkozy was said to be furious after it emerged that Mr Buisson had recorded hundreds of hours of meetings and private conversations during his 2007-12 term as French president.

In a statement, Mr Buisson\'s lawyer confirmed that the tapes had been made but claimed they had been done to help him to keep a proper record of all discussions with Mr Sarkozy and other officials.

Most of the recordings were destroyed and those that have been made public must have been stolen, the lawyer added.

\'Betrayed\'
Some of the recordings were published by satirical magazine Le Canard Enchaine and website Atlantico on Wednesday.

The initial revelations contain excerpts in which top officials express scorn over the presence of Mr Sarkozy\'s wife at meetings at the Elysee.

They also suggest that Mrs Bruni-Sarkozy was unhappy that she had lost income when she married Mr Sarkozy, and hoped to boost her finances by advertising anti-ageing products.

Mr Sarkozy himself is shown to have been dismissive, even mocking, of the capacities of some of his ministers.

Henri Guaino, one of Mr Sarkozy\'s closest allies, said the former president was feeling \

Afghan vice president Mohammad Qasim Fahim dies
Afghan vice president Mohammad Qasim Fahim dies
  • Order:
  • Duration: 2:03
  • Updated: 09 Mar 2014
One of Afghanistan's two vice-presidents, Marshal Mohammad Qasim Fahim, has died of natural causes aged 57, a government spokesman has said. The Afghan government has called for three days of mourning, during which flags will be flown at half-mast. Marshal Fahim was a leader of the Tajik ethnic minority and a former warlord. He was part of the alliance that ousted the Taliban in 2001 and served first as defence minister, before becoming vice-president in 2009. President Hamid Karzai's office told the Associated Press news agency that Marshal Fahim died from an illness. Assassination attempt The president called Marshal Fahim a true patriot and said his death was "a huge loss for Afghanistan". He was an ally of leading anti-Taliban fighter Ahmed Shah Masood, who was killed two days before the 9/11 attacks by two Tunisian Islamist militants posing as journalists. After Mr Masood's death, Marshal Fahim headed the Northern Alliance and analysts say he commanded great loyalty from former fighters. Before the 2009 presidential election, Marshal Fahim survived an assassination attempt when the convoy he was travelling in was fired at with rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns. The Taliban said it carried out the attack. His death comes ahead of presidential elections on 5 April to replace Mr Karzai, who cannot run for a third term in office. The council will then consider a resolution to act on the commission's recommendations.

An Italian man and an Austrian man were falsely listed as passengers on Beijing-bound flight MH370, which disappeared after takeoff from Kuala Lumpur early on Saturday with 239 people aboard. Authorities later confirmed the two men - Austrian Christian Kozel and Italian Luigi Maraldi were not on the plane, and their passports had been stolen in Thailand within the last two years. An Interpol spokeswoman said a check of all documents used to board the plane had revealed more "suspect passports" that were being further investigated. Interpol maintains a vast database of more than 40 million lost and stolen travel documents, and has long urged member countries to make greater use of it to stop people crossing borders on false papers. Few countries systematically do so, it said in a statement. The police organization confirmed that Kozel's and Maraldi's passports had both been added to the database after their theft in 2012 and 2013 respectively. But it said no country had consulted the database to check either of them since the time they were stolen, so it was unclear how many times they might have been used to board flights or cross borders. "Whilst it is too soon to speculate about any connection between these stolen passports and the missing plane, it is clearly of great concern that any passenger was able to board an international flight using a stolen passport listed in Interpol's databases," Secretary General Ronald Noble said. The database is currently available to law enforcement authorities but not to airlines, the spokeswoman said. "This is a situation we had hoped never to see. For years Interpol has asked why should countries wait for a tragedy to put prudent security measures in place at borders and boarding gates," Noble said. "If Malaysia Airways (sic) and all airlines worldwide were able to check the passport details of prospective passengers against Interpol's database, then we would not have to speculate whether stolen passports were used by terrorists to board MH 370," he added. There is so far no indication that the plane's disappearance is linked to the two passengers falsely travelling under the European passports. Authorities are currently trying to establish their true identities. The fate of the plane is not known, but an investigation is narrowing in on the possibility that it disintegrated in mid-flight, according to a senior source. Despite years of pressure from Interpol, in 2013 passengers were able to board planes a billion times without their passports being screened against the agency's databases, the agency said.http://news.yahoo.com/interpol-says-examining-additional-suspect-passports-malaysia-flight-130200611--sector.html;_ylt=AwrSyCOz9hxTJG4AJ0vQtDMD March 9 2014 Breaking News New York Times Passport Theft Adds to Mystery of Missing Malaysia Airlines Jet http://www.nytimes.com/2014/03/09/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-flight.html?_r=0 March 9 2014 Breaking News Associated Press Vietnam says it may have found missing jet's door http://www.boston.com/news/world/asia/2014/03/09/air-force-chief-malaysia-jet-may-have-turned-back/TLZ5W65xU3mLsTVxD3lA5N/story.html March 9 2014 Breaking news CNN New leads explored in hunt for missing Malaysia Airlines flight http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/09/world/asia/malaysia-airlines-plane/index.html March 9 2014 Breaking News Huffington Post Malaysia Airlines Plane Missing At Sea Off Vietnam http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/03/08/malaysia-airlines-plane-missing_n_4924974.html

French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni seek injunction over tapes

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy and his wife Carla Bruni have launched legal action after secret recordings of them were leaked online. Lawyers for Mr Sarkozy filed a request for an emergency injunction to prevent more transcripts from being published. They say the recordings were made by a former aide, Patrick Buisson, without the couple's knowledge. Although the transcripts are embarrassing, they are not considered too damaging, correspondents say. Mr Sarkozy was said to be furious after it emerged that Mr Buisson had recorded hundreds of hours of meetings and private conversations during his 2007-12 term as French president. In a statement, Mr Buisson's lawyer confirmed that the tapes had been made but claimed they had been done to help him to keep a proper record of all discussions with Mr Sarkozy and other officials. Most of the recordings were destroyed and those that have been made public must have been stolen, the lawyer added. 'Betrayed' Some of the recordings were published by satirical magazine Le Canard Enchaine and website Atlantico on Wednesday. The initial revelations contain excerpts in which top officials express scorn over the presence of Mr Sarkozy's wife at meetings at the Elysee. Henri Guaino, one of Mr Sarkozy's closest allies, said the former president was feeling "betrayed" by Mr Buisson.
