Coal Mine Fire in Australia Could Burn for Months - Fire Service
The Victorian fire service tells Australians that a fire in an open cast coal mine, that has blanketed the town of Morwell in acrid smoke, could take months to put out. Full Story: Residents of Morwell in the Australian state of Victoria have been warned a fire in an open cast coal mine could take months to extinguish, according to the local fire service. The fire, which police believe was started deliberately, has been burning for more than two weeks sending plumes of smoke over the town, 95miles east of Melbourne, and threatening a power station which is right beside it, media reports said. "A very difficult fire fight and obviously a very tense time for our firefighters to make sure that the Hazelwood Power Station wasn't impacted nor on fire," said Craig Lapsley, Commissioner of the Victoria Fire Service. TV pictures showed some residents in Morwell have taken to wearing face masks to protect themselves from the acrid smoke, which has high levels of carbon monoxide, according to the State's Chief Health Officer, Dr Rosemary Lester. "Our priority at the moment is to concentrate on the short term health effects that we know that the smoke can cause. We know that the fine particles in the smoke can get down into the lungs and that can cause short term health effects like exacerbation of asthma, worsening of heart or other lung conditions and we know that the people who are most vulnerable to these effects are people with pre-existing heart and lung conditions, children, the elderly, smokers and pregnant women," Dr Lester said. The fire service is warning residents that forecasts of warm weather next week could hamper efforts to bring the blaze under control, local media reported. Greek Statue Found in Gaza
Greek Statue Found in Gaza
A rare bronze statue of the Greek god Apollo mysteriously surfaces in the Gaza Strip only to be immediately taken into police custody. Full Story: On the rocky shores of the Gaza Strip, a buried treasure lost for centuries resurfaces. This fisherman says he found a six-foot bronze statue of the Greek god Apollo. JOUDAT GHRAB, FISHERMAN WHO SAYS HE FOUND THE STATUE, SAYING: "There were five of us down on the beach, trying to pull it. The weight of the statue under the sea was different than out of the sea. On the beach, five people were unable to carry it. We finally put it on a small cart and turned it upside down." But shortly after the statue's discovery and a brief appearance on eBay, police from the Islamist group Hamas seized it. They say they're investigating the affair. Many archaeologists have yet to see the statue, which is estimated of being at least 2,000 years old. JEAN-MICHEL DE TARRAGON, HISTORIAN WITH FRENCH BIBLICAL AND ARCHAEOLOGICAL SCHOOL OF JERUSALEM, SAYING: "It's, you know, it's unique. In some way I say there's no price. There is no price. It's like if people say what is the price of the painting La Gioconda in the Louvre Museum. There is no price, no way, it's unique." Officials at Gaza's tourism ministry say the statue would not be shown to the public until the investigation is completed. Indonesian Orangutans Face Extinction
Anna Chan:
An Indonesian orangutan activist group staged a protest in capital Jakarta's main street today. Their concern... the shrinking habitat for the Asian orangutan. Here's more from Jakarta.
Four wildlife activists were dressed in orangutan costumes to show the plight of the primate. They believe the population has been so hard hit because they are running out of jungle habitat. Trees that make up the landscape are being chopped down and made into oil palm plantations.
On Wednesday the group predicted that orangutans could be extinct within three years if development continues.
[Hardi Baktiantoro, Center of Orangutan Protection]:
"The experts said that orangutan could be extinct in 2015, but we have our own opinion that predicts the orangutan will be extinct within two or three years from now."
Indonesia's jungles are a massive natural stores of carbon. But environmentalists say rampant cutting and burning of trees has made the country the world's third-largest greenhouse gas emitter.
[Hardi Baktiantoro, Center of Orangutan Protection]:
"According to COP field investigations, there is proof that Malaysian companies are destroying natural habitat, capturing and hunting orangutan in Indonesia. Maybe they are not doing it in Malaysia but yes, they are doing in Indonesia."
Indonesia and Malaysia together produced 83 percent of the world's palm oil in 2007.

Rambo Wants Democracy
Anna Chan:
Hollywood actor Sylvester Stallone calls for democracy in Burma.
His latest "Rambo" film is set in Burma and deals with human rights violations. Here's more on the story.
Rags-to-riches boxer and tough-as-nails Vietnam veteran, thats Rambo.
Sylvester Stallone writes, directs and stars as Rambo in this new movie.
[Sylvester Stallone, Rambo Actor]:
"I wanted to do something realistic, something responsible and something political and not many people in the world know about Burma even though it's the longest reigning civil war, 60 years, on the planet."
Yesterday Stallone was in Tokyo talking up his movie, as well as doing his bit to help the Burmese people.
[Sylvester Stallone, Rambo Actor]:
"Just recently with this horrible cyclone, we see how these people were unprepared and are being treated terribly, suffering because of the indifference of the government... I think what's gonna come out of this devastating cyclone and the fact that our film has made it much more apparent of the violence that these people live under, I think there's going to be great social change in that country because they can't hide anymore. So we're very happy and proud to be involved with doing our little effort and bring Burma into an area of democracy."
Stallone appeared in great shape after a grueling three months in the Thai and Burmese jungle making the film.
Stallone's movie specifically focuses on the Karen tribe of eastern Myanmar.
UK-based Christian Aid says the Karen and other groups have suffered half a million cases of forced relocation and thousands more have been imprisoned, tortured or killed.
Several former Burmase freedom fighters acted in the movie despite government threats.

Endangered Tiger Cubs Debut
CHEN:
Three tiger cubs from one of the world's most endangered species debuted to the public yesterday at a South Korean zoo. Here's a glimpse.
STORY:
These Siberian tiger cubs have no names yet, but they're the third generation of the Tongil Tiger, meaning 'tiger for unification.' Their grandfather Ra-il was sent from North Korea's Pyongyang Central Zoo in 1995 and their grandmother Hong-A was from one of South Korea's zoos.
The two male cubs and one female cub were born on July 9 to nine-year-old Chungjoo and her mate, five-year-old Koa.
Since the tigress did not care for her cubs right after birth for unknown reasons, the breeders at the zoo had to look after and feed them from the very beginning. Visitors at the zoo were excited to see these new born tiger cubs.
[Park Chul-woo, Visitor]:
"I hope I can see many of these tigers in South Korea."
The Siberian tiger, native to northern China, southern Russia and parts of North Korea, is on the brink of extinction in the wild, disappearing through poaching and loss of habitat. Scientists believe only a few hundred now live outside captivity.

Record Breaking Art Auction
Kean Wong:
A portrait by a British artist went for a whopping $33.6 million at Christie's in New York, shattering the previous record by $10 million set last November.
Lucien Freud's portrait of a nude woman sleeping on a sofa has shot into the record books after selling for the highest figure ever paid for a painting by a living artist.
The British artist's 'Benefits Supervisor Sleeping' woke the art world with a start as it sold for more than 33.6 million dollars. The price tag was ten million dollars ahead of the previous record set only last November. It was one of eight records smashed at Christie's in New York on Tuesday.
The auction offered less than 60 lots which Christie's officials say was purposely low.
[Brett Gorvy, Christie's Art Specialist]:
"We cut down the number of works within the sale. We also concentrated more and more on quality and went out into the market looking for works, very pro-actively looking for great material."
The sale, driven predominantly by American buyers, defied erratic financial markets to bring in a total of 350 million dollars.
Mark Rothko's No. 15 went for over 50 million, way above its pre-sale estimate. Andy Warhol's Double Marlon sold for more than 32 million.
Almost all the lots on offer found buyers despite fears by some auction officials that the spring sales could mark the start of a market downturn.

Mother Visits U.S. Missionary Kenneth Bae in North Korean Prison
The mother of jailed U.S. missionary Kenneth Bae, who is serving a 15-year sentence for state subversion in North Korea, met and hugged her ailing son on Friday (October 11) in Pyongyang. Myunghee Bae told Japan's Kyodo news agency she had met her son in a hospital and he was still far from healthy. She said she would remain in Pyongyang for a few days. Video footage showed Bae and his mother hugging in a hospital in the North Korean capital. Later, his mother said he appeared to be in better health. Kenneth Bae, 45, was born in South Korea, but is a naturalized U.S. citizen. He has been serving a hard labor sentence after being convicted in May of crimes against the state. Bae has acknowledged being a missionary and has said he conducted religious services in the North, one of the most isolated states on earth and long hostile to Westerners advocating religious causes. The country's Supreme Court said he used his tourism business to form groups aimed at overthrowing the government. Before arriving in Pyongyang on Thursday (October 10), Bae's mother said she hoped to encourage her son, who has diabetes and has lost a great deal of weight during his incarceration. She expressed gratitude to Pyongyang for allowing the visit. She was greeted on arrival by the Swedish ambassador to Pyongyang, according to the Choson Sinbo, a pro-Pyongyang Korean newspaper based in Japan. Sweden provides consular services for some countries that do not have diplomatic relations with the North, including the United States. Bae was detained last November as he led a tour group through the northern region of the country. He was sentenced amid a long series of acrimonious exchanges between Pyongyang and Washington over the reclusive state's nuclear program.- published: 14 Oct 2013
