¡Boogaloo Fiesta en la Playa! — Tiki Oasis report

Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus and Cyrano at ¡Boogaloo Fiesta en la Playa!

Tiki Oasis, the most fantabulous tiki enthusiast event in the world, took place on four swingin’ days in August—18 through 21—at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in San Deigo.  Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus was asked to co-host a dance party with his pal DJ Cyrano (KXLU), so off he went, to the Golden State!

¡Boogaloo Fiesta en la Playa! was held on the Friday night.  That afternoon, The Boog rounded up some friends, old and new (Baba and Hector from The Zeros, Suz from Italy) and headed for Tijuana.  Some great food was eaten and a few records and wrestling masks were purchased.  The Boog was lucky enough to find a pari of fabulous shoes:  patent leather, pointed toes, Cuban heels.  After a TWO HOUR wait in line to get back into the States(!!), the Boog just barely made it in time for his DJ gig.

¡The Boogaloo Fiesta! was a boss’ affair, with surprise, unofficial guest host Big Sandy (who had sung with Los Straight Jackets earlier in the evening) sitting on the stage most of the night, with a great big smile on his handsome face and a rum drink in one hand.  Regular Wang Dang Doodle Go-Go dancer Brooklyn Babydoll was also on hand to provide artistic gyrations at the appropriate moments.

Cryano spins as Big Sandy digs and Brooklyn Babydoll frugs.

DJ Cyrano, who played some excellent songs, came up with a great idea:  On the back of posters and taped to the wall behind the DJ booth, the nights DJs listed the songs that they played as they played them.  Watch this space to see more news on that.  Meanwhile, here are the songs that Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus played:

The next day, after his morning swim, the Boog spun records at the Luxuria Music booth, located in the Kona Coast Room of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, where a bazaar was taking place—all sorts of artists, clothiers, craftsmen and other assorted vendors selling their wares, mostly tiki-related.  This is one of the greatest things about Tiki Oasis—the merchants.  The art quality is very high and most of it is totally amazing.  A tiki enthusiast can spend a LOT of money if one cannot restrain oneself.  Just looking at all the stuff is an E-ticket!  The Booga constrained himself to only buy one thing: a fez from Fez-O-Rama!

DJ Gaylord Fields tries to concentrate as Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus bugs him at the Luxuria Music booth.

Here are the records that the Boog played during his 30-minute set:

  • Jack Costanzo and His Orchestra—Theme From Route 66 (Liberty)
  • Quartet Tres Bien—Voo Doo Man (Royal-Tone)

  • Stan Kenton and His Orchestra—Tequila (Capitol)
  • Perez Prado and His Orch.—Caravan (RCA Victor)
  • Hank Diamond—Soul Sauce (Wachi Wara) (World Pacific)

90-year-old Mr. Bongo hits the conga at Tiki Oasis 11.

Saturday evening was truly exciting, starting with a set by The Boog’s hero Jack Costanzo, Mr. Bongo—a world-renown percussionist whose records are all amazing.  At 90-years-old, Jack can still smack the old skin around!  Plus, the band he had with him was perfect, playing latin jazz and Boogaloo grooves for about 45 minutes or so.  The Boog was able to get a picture sleeve autographed by Mr. Bongo.

Next up was Orchestra Superstring, featuring our pal DJ Bonebrake (of X, The Knitters, The Eyes and of course The DJ Bonebrake Trio).  It was a gas to see this ex-Love Supreme bang out some great original melodies on his trusty vibraphone.  After a burlesque show, DJ returned, behind the drums this time, and played with Herb—a tribute to Herb Alpert & the Tijuana Brass.

DJ Bonebrake is the featured vibist in the Orchestra Superstring at Tiki Oasis 11.

The evening continued with the Latin Au Go-Go dance event, hosted by the Luxuria Music DJs: Howie Pyro, Switched on Audrey and Strike.  It was a total GAS!!

It must be said that Otto and Baby Doe Von Stroheim put on one heck of a show!  Tiki Oasis is easily one of the most fun annual events in the world and it is highly recommended to all readers of the Boogaloo Blog.  Next year’s theme will be “spys” and will take place on the third weekend of August.  Attendance is strongly suggested.

NEW KICK!! Ultra Dynamic! Ultra Groovy!

Brooklyn Babydoll does the shimmy as Mr. Fine Wine cues another Ultra Dynamic Instrumental 45.

The Wang Dang Doodle was extremely proud to present New Kick! Ultra-Dynamic Instrumental Sounds on Friday August 12 featuring guest DJ Mr. Fine Wine—a man of international repute.  As expected, Mr. Fine Wine delivered the goods that night at Teddy’s Bar & Grill, as he played amazing instrumental after amazing instrumental.  Also, as expected, Go-Go dancer Brooklyn Babydoll presented some artistic gyrations, wearing a brief ensemble that included sparkling things. What was not expected was the appearance of the great Mexican DJ Carlos Tropicaza toward the end of the night.  He joined Mr. Fine wine and host Phast Phreddie the Boogaloo Omnibus in a groovy one-after-the-other showdown of boss records until they kicked everybody out of the club!
