    Allentown My Allentown

    boogallentown

On Saturday March 20, Surround Sound Productions held it’s semi-annual 45s/78s only Record Show in Allentown, Pennsylvania.  This is one of the greatest places in the world to find old 45s and has been an excellent source for the Boogaloo Omnibus for more than ten years.  Right after Subway Soul Club ended at 4:00 AM, the Boog zoomed home (thanks to DJ Gaylord Fields for the ride), packed his stuff, grabbed his rented car, picked up fellow DJs Mr. Fine Wine, Bossy Boots and June, and by 6:08 AM was out of the Holland Tunnel and on his way to Allentown.

This hearty quartet of crate diggers reached Allentown in plenty of time to make the 8:00 AM early admission door opening.  Once inside, the Boog found a table full of $3 45s that took his attention for about an hour or so, netting him about 30 45s, including a jumpin’ soul version of “Flat Foot Sam” by Mickey Murray; a very calypso sounding version of “Bo Diddley” by Jean Dinning; Al Madison Orchestra’s “The Madison Avenue Twist;” “I Don’t Know,” a cool, ska-tinged number by Steve Alaimo; and “Two Apartments,” a real oddity of mostly weird drumming and noises, obviously one of those B-sides that no one was ever supposed to play on the radio, by The Gang on 29th Street (and Missy).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Other favorites picked up in Allentown are “Nuthin Man Nuthin’” by Dick Vance; a pair of chop sue records—“Chop Suey Rock” by The Instrumentals and “Chop Suey” by Red Prysock—“The Discophonic Walk” by Philly DJ Jerry Blavat and Yon Teenagers (this one will get spins at Subway Soul Club); “Donkey Twine” by The Rockin’ Rebels; and a great two-sider by The Bananas—“Frosted Flakes,” an organ-driven instrumental with a jumpin’ shuffle beat, and “Alley Oop Doing the Jerk,” a very hip dance number with a soul beat.  Let’s not forget “The Hoss” by Guitar Junior—a boss new dance craze.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Special thanks goes to Bazooka Joe, who helped the Boog procure a copy of “The Utica Club Natural Carbonation Beer Drinking Song” by The Utica Club Natural Carbination Band.  It is what it is—fabulous.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

The Boog came away with only a handful of soul records, but LOTs of hot instrumentals, including “Zoobee” by The Noise Makers and “Pigmy” by Baby Sticks and the Kingtones, that will be played at the next regularly scheduled Wang Dang Doodle (to be held on April 30 at the Trophy Bar, an evening of crazy instrumental records with guest DJs Billy Miller and Girlsoul—watch this space for details).

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

Favorite score of the day was “Call It Pretending” by Creedence Clearwater Revival.  This is the first song released by Creedence—in fact it came out twice on the Scorpio label, the first time it was listed as by The Golliwogs.  This song came to prominence in the New York vintage music scene a few years ago when Josh Styles of Smashed!Blocked! found a copy and now plays it constantly.  The Boog has coveted it since.

Audio clip: Adobe Flash Player (version 9 or above) is required to play this audio clip. Download the latest version here. You also need to have JavaScript enabled in your browser.

As mentioned earlier, the Allentown Record Show features only 45s and 78s.  The Boog’s last purchase of the day was “I’m a Man,” a 78 by Bo Diddley, which was duly played at The Big Ten Inch on Sunday.
