Femen in Crimea: Topless protester detained outside parliament
A Femen topless protester is dragged away kicking and screaming from outside Crimea's parliament shortly before it voted in favour of becoming part of Russia. Cossacks marched to the Crimean parliament in Simferopol on Thursday (March 6) as deputies inside voted to join Russia, and its Moscow-backed government set a referendum within 10 days on the decision. Large crowds of pro-Moscow demonstrators gathered outside the parliament building, chanting 'Russia' and applauding as the Cossacks - once the patrolmen of Russia's borderlands - walked past. But Femen protesters attempted to stage a topless demonstration at the rally, with one trying to jump on top of the steps in front of the parliament building shouting 'Stop Putin's war!'. Cossacks grabbed them and dragged the kicking and screaming women to a police vehicle, as demonstrators chanted 'Shame!' and attempted to kick them. UN envoy forced out of Crimea by hostile pro-Russian crowd
UN special envoy is detained and besieged inside a cafe in Ukraine's Russian-occupied Crimea region by a hostile crowd shouting "Russia! Russia!" A special UN envoy arrived at Semfiropol Airport airport after being threatened by ten to fifteen armed men on Wednesday while visiting Crimea. The UN deputy secretary-general Jan Eliasson denied reports that UN envoy Robert Serry had been kidnapped, but said that armed men had ordered Serry to leave Crimea and go to the airport. Dutch diplomat Robert Serry flew to Istanbul after the incident. His interpreter, Vadim Kastelli, said he was escorted to the airport without being given a chance to pick up his bags from his hotel and placed on the first flight out. Mr Kastelli, who was with Mr Serry at the time, said the incident began when Mr Serry was blocked by a group of men in civilian clothes after a meeting at a Ukrainian military compound. The men insisted they should take Mr Serry straight to the airport and out of the country, but Serry refused and eventually left his surrounded vehicle on foot, said Kastelli, who became separated from Serry when the envoy left the scene. The envoy later took shelter in a cafe and agreed to leave Crimea to end the stand-off. He was then escorted by police through a crowd of about 100 angry demonstrators, some waving Russian flags. Crimea is under control of Russian forces who seized it last week, although Moscow says "self defence" units of men in uniform without insignia are not under its command. Obama: Crimea referendum would 'violate international law'
US President Barack Obama condemned a proposed referendum in Crimea to join Russia, saying it would "violate international law" and that any decision on Crimea "must include the Ukrainian government." Speaking to reporters at the White House, Obama said US sanctions were aimed at punishing Moscow for its intervention in Ukraine. "This morning I signed an executive order that authorises sanctions on individuals and entities responsible for violating the sovereignty and territorial integrity o... Crimea Update, Obama Sanctions Russia, Israel Intercepts Hamas Rockets, Another ObamaCare Delay
http://usawatchdog.com/weekly-news-wrap-up-3-7-14/ - President Obama announced sanctions on anyone "violating the sovereignty of Ukraine" or "stealing the assets of the Ukrainian people." The Russians said, earlier in the week, they would dump dollars and Treasury bonds and also seize Western assets if sanctions were imposed. Well, it is definitely game on. The Israelis intercepted a load of long range rockets before they were delivered to Hamas in Gaza. According to Israel, these rockets would have been a "game changer." Finally, if you like your health care plan, you can keep it—for one more year. This is, yet, another delay to Obama Care. It allows people to keep what the government calls non-compliant or no-frill plans. Ukraine: OCSE observers turned away from Crimea
Gunmen prevented a group of 40 European observers on a fact-finding mission from entering Crimea on Thursday. They were travelling by road from Odessa, a port on Ukraine's Black Sea coast, towards Crimea, when they were detained by unidentified men in army uniform. The group of observers from 21 Organisation for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE) countries is supposed to be in Ukraine from March 5 to March 12. Earlier the Crimean parliament said a decree making the region part of Russ... Crimea Russia Vote Could Destabilize The World
Crimea Russia Vote Could Destabilize The World
*Ukraine lurched toward breakup Thursday as lawmakers in Crimea unanimously declared they wanted to join Russia and would put the decision to voters in 10 days. President Barack Obama condemned the move and the West answered with the first real sanctions against Russia. Speaking from the White House, Obama said any decisions on the future of Crimea, a pro-Russian area of Ukraine, must include the country's new government. "The proposed referendum on the future of Crimea would violate the constitution and violate international law," Obama said. "We are well beyond the days when borders can be redrawn over the heads of democratic leaders." Russian President Vladimir Putin was almost certainly behind Thursday's dramatic developments, but it was not clear whether he is aiming for outright annexation, or simply strengthening his hand in talks with the West. The U.S. moved to impose financial sanctions and travel restrictions on opponents of Ukraine's new government and the EU also announced limited punitive measures against Putin's government, including the suspension of trade and visa talks. Both Washington and the EU said they were discussing further sanctions...* The Young Turks host Cenk Uygur breaks it down. *Read more here from the AP: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=286617558 ********** The Largest Online News Show in the World. Russian troops fire warning shots at Crimea air base
SEVASTOPOL, Ukraine (AP) — Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered tens of thousands of Russian troops participating in military exercises near Ukraine's border to return to their bases as U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry was on his way to Kiev. Tensions remained high in the strategic Ukrainian peninsula of Crimea with troops loyal to Moscow firing warning shots to ward off protesting Ukrainian soldiers. The massive military exercise in western Russia involving 150,000 troops, hundreds of tanks and dozens of aircraft was supposed to wrap up anyway, so it was not clear if Putin's move was an attempt to heed the West's call to de-escalate the crisis that has put Ukraine's future on the line- published: 04 Mar 2014
