Since ancient times, the Crimea has presented its strategic position as its main value. Scythians and Greeks created a powerful State, the Kingdom of the Bosporus, 2,500 years ago. Romans and Byzantines took advantage of its advanced position of maritime control and commercial hub, and Jews and Genoese made flourish their cities during the Middle Ages. During the Tatar invasions of the 13th century, these warriors found there not only a strategically important place, but also a land of beauty and agricultural wealth. They set up their own State and settled largely mixed with the previous inhabitants, giving rise to the new nation ,Crimean tatars. http://crimeanomad.com/- published: 28 Mar 2012

Crimean Crisis Teaser
Crimean Crisis Teaser
1300km NW of the Darial Gorge is a small fishing village on the Crimean Peninsula. Russian forces are planning to meet with an unknown Crimean Tatar power figure in an effort to heal old wounds and align forces against the US. US Special Operations assets are deploying to conduct special reconnaissance, civil affairs and direct action missions to disrupt Russian efforts and ensure the Crimean Peninsula remains unsecured. MilSim West presents "The Crimean Crisis." 21-23 February 2014. Registration open now at: http://milsimwest.com/crimean-crisis-registration/ FAQ: Q. Your previous events were cheaper, why the increase in price? A. We have always prided ourselves on our events offering a good value to participants, and this has absolutely not changed. The price has gone up, but so has the value; each additional dollar raised through registration has gone to improving the event. Q. You mentioned a better value, what do you mean by that? A. Lots of pyrotechnics, access to a unique and exciting AO to include a MOUT site, heated barracks and shower facilities, and of course your BBs will be issued as part of the event. Anyone who was at our previous event, Darial Gate will remember the visceral feel of parachute flares going off overheard during the night phases, and mortar rounds exploding during the day phase - expect more of that! Q. Ugh, late February in the Pacific Northwest? Aren't you guys worried about the weather? A. Not at all. Part of the value you are getting from this event is access to military barracks, and shower facilities. It can rain all day, but who cares if you get to go back and take a shower, change into dry clothes, and sleep on a bed inside? Q. I see your event is at Camp Rilea, I went to a previous airsoft event there and it focused too much on the MOUT site and I was unhappy. What will you do differently? A. MilSim West's bread and butter is woods-based events, and always has been. We plan for that to continue, especially at this event. The MOUT site will be utilized, but by no means will it be the focal point of the event. Trust us! Q. Can I wait till the last moment to pay? A. Yes, you can wait till the last minute to pay but we wouldn't recommend it. Our previous event sold out before the close of registration leaving many who were planning on coming, but hadn't registered yet, out in the cold. On top of that, there is a significant discount offered to those who register early (before Jan 7, 2014). Q. When does registration close? A. Typically, registration closes 2-weeks prior to the event. We would not recommend you wait that long as we expect this event to sell out. Q. What are the available sides at this event? A. There are two available sides, and three factions. There is NATO forces on one side, and Russian on the other supported by the local Crimean Tatar militia. Q. What are the uniform and/or kit restrictions? A. NATO is limited to Multicam, however if you bring a squad of 9 or larger you can wear any NATO based camouflage you want - as long as it is not Russian or US M81 Woodland. Russian forces are limited to Russian camouflage only. The Crimean Tatars are limited to US M81 woodland only, and please no plate carriers or helmets - this is a militia unit. Q. What are the weapon restrictions? A. NATO is limited to US style weapons only (AR variant/SCAR/M249/M240/M60/M40/SR25/M14s). Russians are limited to Russian/Soviet weapons system (AK/SVD/PKM/RPK). Crimean Tatars have no weapon restrictions. Q. What airports are closest to the AO? A. PDX (Portland International Airport) in Portland, OR is about a 2 hour drive to the AO. SEATAC (Seattle-Tacoma International Airport) in Seattle, WA is a little over a 3 hour drive to the AO. Q. I want to use a blank-fire weapon system. What is the approval process? A. PM the MSW FB page for more information if you are interested in using a blank-fire weapon system.- published: 05 Jan 2014

Chapter 9: Kazantip
Kazantip on the Crimean peninsula in Ukraine. One of the best music-festivals in the world. The Kazantip Republic, or 'Z' for short, takes place on the Ukranian Black Sea and is the ending point for the Black Sea Run. The white tents and colorful dance-floors stretch along the beautiful Ukranian beach.
We stayed in the small city of Popivka in a cheap hotel for 4 days. The relaxed town was full with partygoers (mostly from Ukraine and Russia) only visiting for KaZantip.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Yalta - Highlights of the Grand Finale
KINGS OF THE CASTLE
Artem Silchenko wins final in Ukraine, Gary Hunt receives 2011 Overall Title
Three 10s for one dive and more than 500 points in total - Artem Silchenko broke a personal and a World Series record at the grand final of the 2011 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series in Yalta, Ukraine. At the seventh and culminating competition, the Russian made it to the top of the podium for the first time this year, beating the reigning World Series champion Gary Hunt (GBR) by more than 50 points. With today’s victory, he secured his second overall place in front of 15,000 fans on boats, rocks and the beach surrounding Swallow’s Nest castle. Third today and overall finished Czech diver Michal Navratil.
From the remote Island of Rapa Nui to Central and North America and back to Europe - a season of the unexpected saw a great showdown on the Crimean peninsula, where the ‘brilliant Brit’ Gary Hunt defended his overall title and only the top six high divers pre-qualified for next season. A qualification competition at the beginning of next year will decide the participants for 2012.

Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 - Yalta - The Grand Finale in Ukraine
Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series 2011 comes to Ukraine for season’s grand finale
Exactly one hundred years after Russian architect Leonid Sherwood started to build it in 1911, the “Swallow’s Nest” stages the culminating competition in the World Series’ third year. The ornate castle near Yalta on the Crimean shore in southern Ukraine provides the perfect backdrop for the crowning of this year’s champion. Gary Hunt from England will once again take the highest cliff diving honours after 2010. The top six positions, though, are still fiercely fought and only the first six classified athletes will automatically advance to next year. Impressive high diving action until the very last dive is guaranteed, as the Crimean peninsula will definitely and finally decide who of the 13-man-strong field of participants gets officially recognised as a member of the world’s best cliff divers. © Red Bull Media House

The Crimean War Of 1853 - 1856
The Crimean War Of 1853 - 1856
The Crimean War (pronounced /kraɪˈmiːən/ or /krɨˈmiːən/) (October 1853 -- February 1856) was a conflict in which Russia lost to an alliance of France, Britain, the Ottoman Empire, and Sardinia. While neutral, Austria played a role in stopping the Russians. The immediate issue involved the rights of Christians in the Holy Land, which was controlled by the Ottoman Empire. The French promoted the rights of Catholics, while Russia promoted those of the Orthodox. The longer-term causes involved the decline of the Ottoman Empire, and the unwillingness of Britain and France to allow Russia to gain territory and power at Ottoman expense. Russia lost and the Ottomans gained a twenty-year respite from Russian pressure. The Christians were granted a degree of official equality and the Orthodox gained control of the Christian churches in dispute. Russia survived, gained a new appreciation for its religious diversity, and launched a reform program with far-reaching consequences. According to Shepard Clough, professor of history at Columbia University, the war: "was not the result of a calculated plan, nor even of hasty last-minute decisions made under stress. It was the consequence of more than two years of fatal blundering in slow-motion by inept statesmen who had months to reflect upon the actions they took. It arose from Napoleon's search for prestige; Nicholas's quest for control over the Straits; his naïve miscalculation of the probable reactions of the European powers; the failure of those powers to make their positions clear; and the pressure of public opinion in Britain and Constantinople at crucial moments." Russia and the Ottoman Empire went to war in October 1853 over Russia's rights to protect Orthodox Christians. Russia gained the upper hand after destroying the Ottoman fleet at the Black Sea port of Sinope; to stop Russia's conquest France and Britain entered in March 1854. Most of the fighting took place for control of the Black Sea, with land battles on the Crimean peninsula in southern Russia. The Russians held their great fortress at Sevastopol for over a year. After it fell, peace became possible, and was arranged at Paris in March 1856. The religion issue had already been resolved. The main results were that the Black Sea was neutralised—Russia would not have any warships there—and the two provinces of Wallachia and Moldavia became largely independent under nominal Ottoman rule. There were smaller campaigns in eastern Anatolia, Caucasus, the Baltic Sea, the Pacific Ocean and the White Sea. In Russia, this war is also known as the "Eastern War" (Russian: Восточная война, Vostochnaya Voina). The war transformed the region. Because of battles, population exchanges, and nationalist movements incited by the war, the present-day states of Ukraine, Moldova, Bulgaria, Romania, Greece, Turkey, Armenia, Georgia, and regions such as Crimea and the Caucasus all changed in small or large ways due to this conflict. The Crimean War is notorious for logistical, medical and tactical failure on both sides. The naval side saw both a successful Allied campaign which eliminated most of the ships of the Russian Navy in the Black Sea, and a successful blockade by the Royal Navy in the Baltic. It was one of the first "modern" wars because it saw the first use of major technologies, such as railways and telegraphs(Preface) It is also famous for the work of Florence Nightingale and Mary Seacole, who pioneered contrasting nursing practices while caring for wounded British soldiers. The Crimean War was one of the first wars to be documented extensively in written reports and photographs: notably by William Russell (writing for The Times newspaper) and the photographs of Roger Fenton. News from war correspondents reached all nations involved in the war and kept the public citizenry of those nations better informed of the day-to-day events of the war than had been the case in any other war to that date. The British public was very well informed regarding the day-to-day realities of the war in the Crimea. After the French extended the telegraph to the coast of the Black Sea during the winter of 1854, the news reached London in two days. When the British laid an underwater cable to the Crimean peninsula in April 1855, news reached London in a few hours. The daily news reports energised public opinion, which brought down the Aberdeen government and carried Lord Palmerston into office as prime minister. Russia, as a member of the Holy Alliance, had operated as the "police of Europe", maintaining the balance of power that had been established in the Treaty of Vienna in 1815. Russia had assisted Austria's efforts in suppressing the Hungarian Revolution of 1848, and expected gratitude.- published: 29 Dec 2013
