Summer, 2008: John McCain secures the nomination, but polls behind Barack Obama. Strategist Steve Schmidt suggests a game changer: picking a conservative female with media savvy, unknown Alaska governor Sarah Palin, as vice president. She's an immediate hit and a quick study - the gap closes. Then, Tina Fey's impersonation, a raft of criticism, and missing her family send Palin into a near-catatonic state: she doesn't prepare for her Katie Couric interview and bombs. Schmidt searches for an answer: don't expect her to learn the issues, but give her a script. Palin does well in the debate with Biden; she finds her voice, goes off script, and goes rogue. A mistake?

On Friday afternoon's Martin Bashir program on MSNBC, host Martin Bashir delivered a scathing attack on Palin, while attempting to contextualize the horror of slavery for her by detailing some of the cruelty recorded in the diary of Thomas Thistlewood, a British overseer at a Jamaican sugar plantation. Bashir concluded his commentary by suggesting Palin is deserving of the same treatment. In his "Clear the Air" segment, Bashir lit into Palin straight away, referring to her as America's "resident dunce" and characterizing her remarks as "scraping the barrel of her long-deceased mind, and using her all-time favorite analogy in an attempt to sound intelligent about the national debt." He then played a clip of Palin's comments from last weekend, in which she told a crowd at Iowa's Faith and Freedom Coalition event, "Our free stuff today is being paid for by taking money from our children, and borrowing from China. When that note comes due — and this isn't racist, so try it. Try it anyway. This isn't racist. But it's going to be like slavery when that note is due." "It will be like slavery," Bashir repeated. "Given her well-established reputation as a world class idiot, it's hardly surprising that she should choose to mention slavery in a way that is abominable to anyone who knows anything about its barbaric history." "So here's an example," Bashir continued. "One of the most comprehensive first-person accounts of slavery comes from the personal diary of a man called Thomas Thistlewood, who kept copious notes for 39 years. Thistlewood was the son of a tenant farmer, who arrived on the island of Jamaica in April 1750, and assumed the position of overseer at a major plantation." "What is most shocking about Thistlewood's diary is not simply the fact that he assumes the right to own and possess other human beings, but is the sheer cruelty and brutality of his regime," Bashir added. "In 1756, he records that a slave named Darby 'catched eating kanes had him well flogged and pickled, then made Hector, another slave, s-h-i-t in his mouth.'" "This became known as 'Darby's Dose,' a punishment invented by Thistlewood that spoke only of inhumanity. And he mentions a similar incident in 1756, his time in relation to a man he refers to as Punch. 'Flogged punch well, and then washed and rubbed salt pickle, lime juice and bird pepper, made Negro Joe piss in his eyes and mouth,'" Bashir recited. "I could go on, but you get the point," Bashir said, concluding "When Mrs. Palin invokes slavery, she doesn't just prove her rank ignorance. Between 1999 and 2003, Cruz served as the director of the Office of Policy Planning at the Federal Trade Commission, an Associate Deputy Attorney General at the United States Department of Justice, and as Domestic Policy Advisor to U.S. President George W. Bush on the 2000 Bush-Cheney campaign. In addition, Cruz was an Adjunct Professor of Law at the University of Texas School of Law in Austin, where he taught U.S. Supreme Court litigation, from 2004 to 2009. Cruz was the Republican nominee for the Senate seat which was vacated by fellow Republican Kay Bailey Hutchison. On July 31, 2012, he defeated Lieutenant Governor David Dewhurst in the Republican primary runoff, 57--43. Cruz defeated the Democrat, former state Representative Paul Sadler, in the general election held on November 6, 2012; he prevailed with 56--41 over Sadler.[7] Cruz openly identifies with the Tea Party movement, and is also endorsed by the Republican Liberty Caucus. On November 14, 2012, Cruz was appointed vice-chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, the committee that seeks to elect more Republicans to the Senate. A Cuban-American, Cruz is one of three Latinos in the Senate. The others—also Cuban-Americans—are fellow Republican Marco Rubio of Florida and Democrat Bob Menendez of New Jersey. "Not any of them. There is no Ronald Reagan on the scene today. If he were on the scene, that's who I would put my faith in. "New Jersey, a blue state, has a Republican governor. Right on; it beats the alternative." Christie, who was re-elected governor by a large margin last week, got a vote of support for 2016 from former presidential candidate Mitt Romney on Meet the Press, who said that Christie could save the Republican party. Last week in an interview, Christie called the federal government shutdown engineered by Republican Senator Ted Cruz and members of the Tea Party "a monumental failure." "When you stand in the middle of the road, you're going to get hit on both sides of the road,'' Palin said. "We need to take a stand, especially on this Obamacare, and support those who are just fulfilling their campaign promises. So many politicians ran for reelection and for election saying they would do anything in their power to de-fund the state of socialized medicine program called Obamacare. Ted Cruz, Mike Lee, some of these guys were actually fulfilling their campaign promises and they ask for debate. That's why they stood up. They took the stand, (and) fought for us to debate the issue of Obamacare." The former Alaska governor and Republican vice presidential candidate is back in the spotlight with a recent speech in Iowa and a national tour supporting her new book, "Good Tidings and Great Joy: Protecting the heart of Christmas." Lauer asked Palin about President Barack Obama's apology at the end of last week after it was discovered that five percent of Americans can't keep their existing policies because they don't meet the standards of the new healthcare law. "What apology?'' Palin said. "He kind of acknowledged a bit that there's a broken website. The broken website is the least of America's worries. This broken website I think is symbolic of a broken administration. Take over one-sixth of our economy and the socialized medicine that's being crammed down our throat, that's what's broken. "Where do you get this five percent?'' she said. "It's not five percent. It's most Americans will not be able to keep the healthcare policy and programs that they had desired. The new programs that are being forced down our throat are unaffordable. Some of them are still being told, 'Well if you like that insurance policy and that coverage, you still will be able to keep it, it's just going to cost you a little bit more.' That's the point. If it's going to cost you more, then it's not the same policy." Lauer asked Palin about the Tea Party's alternative. "The plan is to allow those things that had been proposed over many years to reform a healthcare system in America that certainly does need more help so that there's more competition, there's less tort reform threat, there's less trajectory of the cost increases,'' Palin said. "Those plans have been proposed over and over again, and what thwarts those plans is the far left. It's President Obama and his supporters who will not allow the Republicans to usher in free market, patient-centered, doctor-patient-relationship leaps to reform healthcare." Palin was coy about any of her own future political aspirations, including a possible run for the Senate out of Alaska. In her book, she writes about a saying posted on her kitchen cabinet that reads, "Do today what others won't, so you can do tomorrow what others want." "Sometimes you do have to make sacrifices today in order to progress those around you to create a better environment for all, so making sacrifices today, perhaps doing what you don't necessarily really, really want to do today, but it pays off in the end,'' she said. "I don't know if that necessarily applies to political office though, because people can make a difference without a title, without an office, and we're proving that." In her new book, Palin steers away from politics to write about the Christmas holiday. She believes Christmas is under assault from atheists and secular liberals. "What I'm saying is, we need to protect the heart of Christmas and not let an angry atheist armed with an attorney, a Scrooge, tell us that we can't celebrate traditional faith in America,'' she said. "We have a constitutionally-protected right to celebrate faith, and Christmas is a part of that."

Sarah Palin joined Megyn Kelly Thursday night, and said that she's not too worried about Ted Cruz's efforts being defeated in Congress, saying that the right, temporarily defeated, is stronger than President Obama triumphant, and if they stay united next time, they could pull off an even bigger win. Palin said Obama's just out of touch and railed against the president on a whole range of issues from Benghazi to "threatening to withhold paychecks" from members of the military during the shutdown. Kelly pointed out that Republicans haven't exactly done that well throughout the shutdown, and suggested this strategy has backfired so much that the GOP could lose the House. Palin was far more optimistic, saying, "If we stand united, well, then we won't lose the House, and we could even win back the Senate." She said conservatives are "more energized than ever" after temporarily losing this fight. Kelly pressed Palin on whether she would back primaries against Republican leaders like Mitch McConnell and Lindsey Graham. Palin argued that competitive primaries produce a "better political system," but she took a "wait and see" attitude for the time being so she can see who steps in as challengers.

In his controversial interview with GQ, Robertson had talked about sin: "Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there. Bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men." "It seems like, to me, a vagina—as a man—would be more desirable than a man's anus," he said. He also claimed that he had never seen a black person mistreated in the South during the Jim Crow era. "I never, with my eyes, saw the mistreatment of any black person. Not once," Robertson insisted. "They're singing and happy. I never heard one of them, one black person, say, 'I tell you what: These doggone white people'—not a word! ... Pre-entitlement, pre-welfare, you say: Were they happy? They were godly; they were happy; no one was singing the blues." After the A&E; network suspended Robertson from his show, Palin took to her Facebook page to opine that "[f]ree speech is an endangered species. Those 'intolerants' hatin' and taking on the Duck Dynasty patriarch for voicing his personal opinion are taking on all of us." Fox News host Greta Van Susteren pointed out to Palin on Monday that some "people" were misusing the term "free speech, meaning that you jump someone for saying something and that you don't jump others." "But if the market wants to be such that people don't want to watch someone, then so be it," the Fox News host said. "That's right," Palin replied. "That's why I say attorneys can discuss and argue whether it's a legal free speech issue or not." "It's one thing to express your opinion," Van Susteren noted. "Do you have any problem, you know, about the manners of how he said it. We don't talk about it on television much, but if you actually the read article, there's a rather and offensive — at least, I think — offensive description of it.
