A story about a young Chinese immigrant woman's life after placing a personal ad for marriage and marrying an older Chinese man to get into the States. Things get complicated when she meets a young Caucasian businessman who falls in love with her. A second story intertwines the first one wherein a medical doctor is married to a difficult woman who divorces him and marries 3 more times unsuccessfully, finally conniving to get back together with him though some devious means after he is promoted to hospital director with a very high income. In the meantime, he gets romantically involved with an attractive Asian restaurant owner competing with the conniving ex wife. The two stories contain enough common ground to present a unified tapestry.

Fay is his total opposite; her romantic ideal has not yet been attained and is unlikely ever to be due to her impossibly high expectations as a result of living with the perfection that is her parents' rock solid marriage. This unlikely pairing proves the rule that in love, there are no rules and the couple meet and fall deeply in love at first sight. All is faultless, until Fay's parents' marriage breaks down suddenly, out of nowhere, after 40 years of wedded bliss. Fay and their relationship are thrown into turmoil. A young man, blind and dumb, works as an audio tape typist in a hospital and fostering a tender and sincere relationship with a beautiful but introverted nurse. When hit by a car, he is the sixty billionth human being to die on earth, and is on transit to Polaris, en route to a yet more sophisticated form of existence in Vega. Given a reprieve of five days and a chance to be reunited with his love on earth, he cannot reveal his true identity behind the temporary facade he must present to her. Both boy and girl eventually learn, through a tangle of difficult and miraculous events, how love and good things always find ways of creeping into people's lives when people are not greedy and least expect these blessings.
