About Kuwait
About Kuwait
Kuwait, officially the State of Kuwait Listeni/kuːˈweɪt/ (Arabic: دولة الكويت Dawlat al-Kuwayt ), is an Arab country in Western Asia. Situated in the northeastern edge of the Arabian peninsula at the tip of the Persian Gulf, it shares borders with Iraq to the north and Saudi Arabia to the south. The name "Kuwait" is the diminutive of Arabic كوت kūt, meaning "fortress". The country covers an area of 17,820 square kilometers (6,880 square miles) and has a population of 2.6 million as of 2012. Historically, the region was the site of the kingdom of Characene, of which the capital city, Charax Spasinu, was a major Parthian port for trade between Mesopotamia and India. By the 19th century, Kuwait came under the influence of the Ottoman Empire. After World War I, it emerged as an independent sheikhdom under the protection of the British Empire. Kuwait's large oil fields were discovered in the late 1930s. Kuwait gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1961. In 1990, Kuwait was invaded and annexed by neighboring Iraq. The seven month-long Iraqi occupation came to an end after direct military intervention by United States-led forces. Around 773 Kuwaiti oil wells were set ablaze by the retreating Iraqi army, resulting in a major environmental and economic catastrophe. Kuwait's infrastructure was badly damaged during the war and had to be rebuilt. Twelve years later, Kuwait saw another massive foreign military presence as it served as a springboard for the U.S.-led campaign in 2003 to oust Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein. Kuwait is a constitutional monarchy with a parliamentary system of government. Kuwait City serves as the country's political and economic capital. Kuwait is often described as the most liberal country in the region. The country has the world's fifth largest oil reserves and petroleum products now account for 87% of export revenues and 75% of government income. Kuwait is the eighth richest country in the world per capital. Kuwait is classified as a high income economy by the World Bank and is designated as a major non-NATO ally of the United States.- published: 18 Dec 2013

Big Science Challenge 2012 UK prize
The Big Science Challenge competition, an initiative organised by the British Council with support from Rolls-Royce, the global power systems company, aimed at secondary schools across the UAE, Bahrain, Qatar, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, Iraq, Oman, Jordan and the UK.
Students aged 11 to 16 were invited to research and design an original, innovative solution to a problem concerning water, either locally, nationally or globally.
Entries were judged at a national level by a panel of experts. The winning teams from each Middle East country were awarded a visit to London for a week-long programme of cultural exchange and educational activities (17-23 March 2012). In addition, students had a unique insight into real-life research and engineering processes during a visit to one of the biggest Rolls-Royce centres in the UK.
This competition, supported by the Ministry of Education in each participating country, aimed at encouraging educational and intercultural exchange which is a core part of both Rolls-Royce's and the British Council's long-term strategy in the region. Young people who took part developed interest and enthusiasm in science and technology, and were equipped with additional skills in scientific research and innovation. Through this initiative and by increasing their knowledge, outlook and skills, students are better able to contribute to the global economy and society.

Supply Chain Implications of Jordan Joining GCC
Samer Almadhoun is Jordanian who has been in the supply chain field roughly 15 years. His professional education was earned from international professional institutes such as APICS and The Chartered Institute of Logistics & Transport (UK). Samer has also acted as a consultant and instructor on a part-time basis, while also maintaining his full-time job in the supply chain field.
Supply chain implications of Jordan joining the GCC
The GCC is the Gulf Cooperation Council. It is a political and economic union of the Arab state constituting the Arabian Peninsula, namely Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and the UAE. In 2011 there was a request by Jordan to join the GCC, which is currently being formally considered.
This area has some of the fastest growing economies in the world, mostly due to the boom in oil and natural gas. This is coupled by the building and investment boom backed by the decades of saving petroleum revenues.
The GCC was formed in 1981 with the objective of formalizing and formulating similar regulations in various fields such as economy, finance, trade, Customs, legalization and administration. A common currency similar to the EURO was also established. It also unified a military presence as the peninsula chief force. The current proposed currency is called Khaleeji.
If the GCC monetary union is realized it would be the second most important super national monetary union in the world after the EURO area.
Jordon requested to join the GCC in 2011 and has been welcomed. Despite the fact that Jordan has no coastline and the differences in tribal societies between the GCC and Jordan, it does have a military expertise. Jordan can provide military assistance to combat political reform. This is one of the many assumptions to explain why the GCC would welcome Jordan. Samer believes it has much to do with the political situation of the revolutionary Arabian States.
When it comes to supply chain, joining the GCC would have its impact. Jordan heavy relies on Customs as a form of international income for the country. Joining the GCC will change the formula. In addition, the smooth trade Jordan will enjoy with the GCC Union will definitely re-shape the Jordanian supply chain.
