Blue Collar (1978) - Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel
Richard Pryor, Harvey Keitel, (1978), Directing genius Paul Schrader's story based around three workers, Zeke, Jerry and Smokey, are working at a car plant and drinking their beers together. One night when they steal away from their wives to have some fun they get the idea to rob the local union's bureau safe. First they think it is a flop, because they get only 600 dollars out of it, but then Zeke realizes that they also have gotten some 'hot' material. They decide to blackmail their union. The best reason for that is the union itself. All three are provoked by the fact that the union claims to have lost 10,000 dollars by their robbery. (Drama, 114 mins.) RATED R, TV-14 Theatrical Release: Friday February 10, 1978 (Universal Pictures) Original TV Premiere Date: Syndication 1981 CAST: Richard Pryor as Zeke Brown Harvey Keitel as Jerry Bartowski Yaphet Kotto as Smokey James Ed Begley, Jr. as Bobby Joe Harry Bellaver as Eddie Johnson George Memmoli as Jenkins Lucy Saroyan as Arlene Bartowski Lane Smith as Clarence Hill Cliff De Young as John Burrows Borah Silver as Dogshit Miller Chip Fields as Caroline Brown Harry Northup as Hank Leonard Gaines as Mr Bird, IRS Man Milton Selzer as Sumabitch Sammy Warren as Barney Jimmy Martinez as Charlie T. Hernandez CREW: Director: Paul Schrader Producers: Don Guest Writers: Paul Schrader, Leonard Schrader Music: Jack Nitzsche Cinematography: Bobby Byrne Editing: Tom Rolf Casting: Vic Ramos Country: United States Language: English EXTRA INFO: The film is both a critique of union practices and an examination of life in a working-class Rust Belt enclave. Although it has minimal comic elements provided by Pryor, it is mostly dramatic. Schrader, who was at the time a renowned screenwriter for his work on Taxi Driver (1976), recalls the shooting as a very difficult one, because of the artistic and personal tension among him and the actors and between the stars together; also stating that it was the only occasion he suffered an on-set mental breakdown, which made him seriously reconsider his career. The film was shot on location at the Checker plant in Kalamazoo, Michigan, and at numerous locales around Detroit, including the Ford River Rouge Complex on the city's southwest side and the MacArthur Bridge to Belle Isle. The three main actors didn't get along and were constantly fighting throughout the shoot. The tension became so great that at one point Richard Pryor (supposedly in a drug-fueled rage) pointed a gun at Schrader and told him that there was "no way" he was ever going to do more than three takes for a scene, an incident which may have caused Schrader's nervous breakdown.- published: 20 Dec 2013

Blue Collar Trailer
This is a makeshift trailer to a film on a timeless topic: blue collar workers being taken advantage of and wondering who to trust and where to turn. Although not a comedy, this 1978 urban masterpiece contained possibly Richard Pryor's finest performance. But Yaphet Kotto and Harvey Keitel are also top notch. Co-written and directed by the always edgy Paul Schrader (his debut as a director). The DVD goes for a significant sum because it is out of print.- published: 23 Dec 2008

Like the band's previous album, The Grand Illusion, it managed to achieve triple-platinum certification, thanks to the hit singles "Sing for the Day", "Blue Collar Man" and "Renegade". The band members produced and recorded the album (like their previous three efforts) at Paragon Studios in Chicago with recording engineer Barry Mraz and mixing engineer Rob Kingsland. "I'm O.K" was recorded at Paragon and St. James Cathedral. This would be the last album to be produced at Paragon Studios. The theme of the album, as Dennis DeYoung explained on In the Studio with Redbeard which devoted an entire episode to Pieces of Eight, was about "not giving up your dreams just for the pursuit of money and material possessions". Eight of the album's ten tracks have vocals, and it features two instrumentals, the DeYoung synthesizer showcase "The Message" and Tommy Shaw's closing "Aku-Aku" (although for the latter, there was one lyric spoken, the title of the song). "The Message" serves as a prelude for "Lords of the Ring", and "Aku-Aku" is a postlude for "Pieces of Eight". The album's cover was done by Hipgnosis. DeYoung stated in the same 1991 interview with Redbeard on the "In the Studio" episode that he initially hated the cover but grew to like it as he got older.- published: 10 Nov 2013

RICHARD PRYOR & STEVE MARTIN - 1978 - Talk Show Appearance
Richard Franklin Lennox Thomas Pryor (December 1, 1940 -- December 10, 2005) was an American stand-up comedian, actor, social critic, satirist, writer, and MC. Pryor was known for uncompromising examinations of racism and topical contemporary issues, which employed colorful vulgarities, and profanity, as well as racial epithets. He reached a broad audience with his trenchant observations and storytelling style. He is widely regarded as one of the most important and influential stand-up comedians of all time: Jerry Seinfeld called Pryor "The Picasso of our profession"; Bob Newhart has called Pryor "the seminal comedian of the last 50 years." This legacy can be attributed, in part, to the unusual degree of intimacy Pryor brought to bear on his comedy. As Bill Cosby reportedly once said, "Richard Pryor drew the line between comedy and tragedy as thin as one could possibly paint it." His body of work includes the concert movies and recordings Richard Pryor: Live & Smokin' (1971), That Nigger's Crazy (1974), ...Is It Something I Said? (1975), Bicentennial Nigger (1976), Richard Pryor: Live in Concert (1979), Richard Pryor: Live on the Sunset Strip (1982), and Richard Pryor: Here and Now (1983). He also starred in numerous films as an actor, such as Superman III (1983) but was usually in comedies such as Silver Streak (1976), and occasionally in dramatic roles, such as Paul Schrader's film Blue Collar (1978). He collaborated on many projects with actor Gene Wilder. Another frequent collaborator was actor/comedian/writer Paul Mooney. Pryor won an Emmy Award (1973), and five Grammy Awards (1974, 1975, 1976, 1981, and 1982). In 1974, he also won two American Academy of Humor awards and the Writers Guild of America Award. The first ever Kennedy Center Mark Twain Prize for American Humor was presented to him in 1998. Pryor is listed at Number 1 on Comedy Central's list of all-time greatest stand-up comedians. Stephen Glenn "Steve" Martin (born August 14, 1945) is an American honorary Academy Award winning actor, comedian, musician, author, playwright and producer. Martin came to public notice as a writer for the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, and later became a frequent guest on The Tonight Show. In the 1970s, Martin performed his offbeat, absurdist comedy routines before packed houses on national tours. In 2004, Comedy Central ranked Martin at sixth place in a list of the 100 greatest stand-up comics. Since the 1980s, having branched away from stand-up comedy, Martin has become a successful actor, as well as an author, playwright, pianist and banjo player, eventually earning Emmy, Grammy and American Comedy awards, among other honors. Martin was awarded an honorary Oscar at the Academy's 5th Annual Governors Awards in November 2013.- published: 10 Dec 2013
