Ambassadors of the Jungle (full documentary)
Ambassadors of the Jungle (full documentary)
Among the high peaks of Papua New Guinea, upholstered in thick jungles, ethnicities inhabit the lands that inspired all that terrible sailors' stories at the begining of XX Century. They are the head-cutters, warlike cannibal clans that keep colorful rituals and lifestyles attached to nature. We will meet the inhabitants of the Highlands and colorful body painting, participate in rituals "sing-sing" of the Asaro people, where mud men try to keep out enemies with its terrifying aspect, we will find the "enga mummies" of Kukukuku, bodies of warriors who were smoked for preserving them. On the Sepik river, we finally find the exuberant nature of the region and the men who worship the crocodile, their flagship specie from which they seek the possession of their spirit through frenzied rites and painful scars tattoos they do in their bodies as an imitation of this great reptile skin. Journalist Ross Kemp's Amazing Confrontation With Gunmen In Papua New Guinea
Actor and journalist Ross Kemp is not only an award-winning performer and investigative reporter, he's also a badass. During a recent journey to Papua New Guinea, Kemp stumbled across a group of militia while searching for a local general. While the gunmen he finds are initially friendly and offer him food and some form of cigarette, they quickly turn confrontational and demand that Kemp get on his knees. "They're going, 'get down on your hands and knees, get down on your hands and knees.' Now, you know at that point, you're going to become a victim," Kemp says. Rather than submit to victimhood, Kemp proceeds to grab the barrels of whatever gun is pointed at him and insist repeatedly that he is not going to be killed that day by them or anyone else. "Are you going to kill me?" he asks. "No one's going to f***ing kill me." Out of respect for this ballsy move, Kemp suggest, his would be killers were moved to back down.- published: 31 Jan 2014

Images Of Papua New Guinea - Scene 1
As promised this is the first installment of my journey to the remote islands and villages of Papua New Guinea on the vessel the True North.
I was asked by owners Craig Howson and Mark Stothard to record the journey through the lens of my trusty 5D mk2 in a way that highlights the beauty of this spectacular country.
I was slightly nervous about PNG as you hear stories about it being an unsafe travel destination but this could not be further from the truth. It was so the opposite that I hope my short productions can dispel any doubts people have about this wonderful country.
Northstar Cruises have been building and fine tuning their Adventures in Paradise PNG tour for 5 years now and it's a credit to the crew of True North for it's well planned, interactive, and safe tour through one of the most remote places in the world.
Papua New Guinea is one of the most beautiful, clean and friendly places I have ever visited and am hoping to return one day to see more of this spectacular land.
It's a photographers paradise and as with the remote Kimberley of Western Australia one of the best travel experiences available.
For all of you who care this production was shot by me using the following equipment. Boy was I tired after I got back.
Two Canon 5D mk2's, Canon lenses 16/35mm, 24mm, 85mm, 18mm tiltshift, 400mm. Fostex FR2LE Field Recorder, Rode Mic's, Azden Wireless Mic's, Aqua Tech Water Housing, Various filters, Lee, Polarizers etc. Macbook Pro, MacPro, Final Cut Studio 7.

Children Of Papua New Guinea
I was fortunate enough to be invited back on True North to experience their "Adventures in Paradise" tour which started in Kavieng In Papua New Guinea and finished at Alatou.
It is an amazing journey which allowed us to interact with many villages that still had no resemblance of twenty first century life. It was like stepping back in time to another world. I was given the opportunity to film many of the children in these villages and I have put together a short collage of some of these.
It was an incredibly moving experience. The excitement on their faces at our arrival and the warmth shown to us was something I will remember for a long time.
The "True North" is the only adventure vessel which visits these areas and makes a logistical nightmare seem effortless. It was a trip of a lifetime and I hope to revisit this amazing country one day.

Papua New Guinea - Sepik and Beyond
This November I was fortunate enough to re visit Papua New Guinea aboard the magnificent True North. This time the journey took us to the North Eastern Sepik river region then on out into the Bismarck sea to explore the amazing outer Islands that make up such a pristine tropical paradise.
Once again I was overwhelmed by the natural beauty of this region as well as an amazing cultural experience the likes I had never imagined. Travelling up the Sepik river was like travelling to an ancient world virtually untouched for hundreds of years. We were privileged to be invited to visit the village which is bringing back the ancient tradition of the crocodile scarification where as part of an initiation to manhood young men would go through the painful process of cutting there skin to create a texture not unlike that of a crocodile.
We also snorkelled and dived on amazing coral reefs with there abundance of tropical fish and colourful corals as well as be enthralled by the local villages of these tiny Island as they entertained us with there traditional dance or Sing Sing.
I have put together this short video as a snapshot of what we experienced over 11 days. 11 days which I will never forget. It has got me wanting more from PNG and I'm already coming up with excuses to get back there next year when True North heads back. It truly is one of the most amazing experiences I have ever had.
For some details on the filming process, the whole edit was shot on the Canon C300 with the exception of the under water sequences shot by Oli Oldroyd on a Olympus OMD. Once agin the C300 performed amazingly in very hot and humid conditions and never missed a beat.
I used the following lenses. Canon 17mm f,4 Tiltshift, 16-35mm f,2.8, 50mm f,1.2, 100mm f,2.8 Macro, and the 400mm f,5.6.
Editing was done on Premiere Pro CS6
Live music was recorded through the C300 with Rode mics and the soundtrack was by XPURM from the album "PRUMX"
You can visit the True North here www.northstarcruises.com.au
Thanks to Mark Stothard and Craig Howson for the opportunity to travel again on the best boat on the water.
