Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom: China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know - September 11, 2013
The need to understand China has never been more pressing, yet the complexity of this ever-transforming giant doesn't make that easy. China expert Jeffrey N. Wasserstrom provided answers to the most urgent questions regarding the world's newest superpower in a discussion of his book 'China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know.' Wasserstrom is Chancellor's Professor of History at the University of California, Irvine. This event was co-sponsored by the Edgar Snow Memorial Foundation and the Kansas City Chinese American Association. http://kclibrary.org- published: 30 Sep 2013

Plum Flower.Deer 梅花.鹿 (原创水墨动画)
My wife and I developed the story about a pair of Plum Flower Deer, (native to parts of China), who are separated by an act of man but are rejoined in spirit. The Plum Flower Deer is one of the most auspicious, divine animals in Chinese culture. The Plum Flower Tree itself has been the subject of innumerable paintings and poems, representing courage and elegance. The film drew on Chinese tradition, and art. The film's closing poem, by 12th century Southern Song Dynasty Chinese poet Lu You, tells of the rebirth of spring and the courage of the plum flower through winter.
Story, Design & Animation: Yoho Hang Yue
Production Company: Crush
Additional Story & Art Direction: Queenie Zhu
3D Modelling: Jacques Dell, Yoho Hang Yue
Sound & Music: Apollo Studios
Special Thanks: Gary Thomas, Crush
"Plum Flower Deer" began in 2009. Originally intended as a piece for F5, a design festival in New York, but was never competed and was not screened there. The film grew and became a rumination about love, hope, the natural world and rebirth.
Crush art director, Yoho Hang Yue, and his wife Queenie, also an art director, developed the story about a pair of Plum Flower Deer, (native to parts of China), who are separated by an act of man but are rejoined in spirit. “We wanted to bring this story to life using modern tools, but we wanted to keep the timelessness of the poem intact,†says Yoho Yang Yue. “It is an ageless story that draws on the rich legacy of Chinese culture.â€
The film took two years to complete and to create it Yoho used After Effects, Cinema 4D and shot elements to create this moving painting. Crush contacted Didier Tovel at Apollo Studios in Toronto to create a score and sound design that captured the mood of the visuals. The score takes its cues from traditional Chinese music without falling becoming a shallow pastiche, and still maintains a contemporary feel.

Jeffrey Wasserstrom: "China in the 21st Century: What Japan Needs to Know"
For students of history, it has been a very worrying year. The world's second- and third-largest economic powers are at loggerheads over territory, diplomacy and history. Relations between China and Japan have corroded alarmingly. The Japanese media regularly rehearses scenarios for limited war with its huge neighbor. Public support for Japan among Chinese has fallen to historic lows. Tokyo's decision to nationalize three of the five Senkaku/Diaoyu Islands has added fuel to an already dangerously smoldering fire. One of the key questions for observers of this faltering relationship is, "how much of China's outrage is manufactured -- and can it be controlled by the government?" A long-time analyst of Chinese affairs, Jeff Wasserstrom says Beijing must deal with an increasingly clear fact: dissatisfaction with Japan no longer translates cleanly into popular nationalism."Increasingly, driven by greater information transparency and reforms decades in the making, many Chinese are rejecting the selective memory of official media, and the idea that patriotism precludes criticism of the government." The author of the acclaimed "China in the 21st Century: What Everyone Needs to Know", Wasserstrom is Chancellor's Professor of Modern Chinese and World History at the University of California, Irvine, and also serves as editor of the Journal of Asian Studies. He is the author of four books, the most recent of which are "Global Shanghai, 1850-2010" (2009). What Everyone Needs to Know..." has just come out in an updated second edition. His commentaries and reviews have appeared in a wide range of newspapers and magazines, including the Wall Street Journal, Time and The New York Times. Come along and hear what a veteran analyst has to say about this vital subject.- published: 31 Oct 2013
