New York City
New York is the most populous city in the United States and the center of the New York Metropolitan Area, one of the most populous metropolitan areas in the world. The city is referred to as New York City or The City of New York to distinguish it from the State of New York, of which it is a part. As a global power city, New York exerts a significant impact upon commerce, finance, media, art, fashion, research, technology, education, and entertainment. The home of the United Nations Headquarters, New York is an important center for international diplomacy and has been described as the cultural capital of the world.
Located on one of the world's largest natural harbors, New York City consists of five boroughs, each of which comprises a state county. The five boroughs—The Bronx, Brooklyn, Manhattan, Queens, and Staten Island—were consolidated into a single city in 1898. With a Census-estimated 2011 population of 8,244,910 distributed over a land area of just 305 square miles (790 km2), New York is the most densely populated major city in the United States. As many as 800 languages are spoken in New York, making it the most linguistically diverse city in the world. The New York City Metropolitan Area's population is the United States' largest, with 18.9 million people distributed over 6,720 square miles (17,400 km2), and is also part of the most populous combined statistical area in the United States, containing 22.1 million people as of the 2010 Census.

The Bronx
The Bronx is the northernmost of the five boroughs of New York City. It is also known as Bronx County, the last of the 62 counties of New York State to be incorporated. Located north of Manhattan and Queens, and south of Westchester County, the Bronx is the only borough that is located primarily on the mainland (a very small portion of Manhattan, the Marble Hill neighborhood, is physically located on the mainland, due to the rerouting of the Harlem River in 1897). The Bronx's population is 1,400,761 according to the 2010 United States Census. The borough has a land area of 42 square miles (109 km2), making it the fourth-largest in land area of the five boroughs, the fourth most populated, and the third-highest in density of population.
The Bronx is divided by the Bronx River into a hillier section in the west, closer to Manhattan, and the flatter East Bronx, closer to Long Island. The West Bronx was annexed to New York City (then largely confined to Manhattan) in 1874, and the areas east of the Bronx River in 1895. The Bronx first assumed a distinct legal identity when it became a borough of Greater New York in 1898. Bronx County, with the same boundaries as the borough, was separated from New York County (afterwards coextensive with the Borough of Manhattan) as of January 1, 1914. Although the Bronx is the third-most-densely-populated county in the U.S., about a quarter of its area is open space, including Woodlawn Cemetery, Van Cortlandt Park, Pelham Bay Park, the New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo in the borough's north and center, on land deliberately reserved in the late 19th century as urban development progressed northwards and eastwards from Manhattan with the building of roads, bridges and railways.

Aesop Rock
Ian Matthias Bavitz (born June 5, 1976), better known by his stage name Aesop Rock, is an American hip hop artist and producer. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s (decade). He was signed to El-P's Definitive Jux label until it went on hiatus in 2010. The music site betterPropaganda ranked him at number 19 at the Top 100 Artists of the Decade. He is a member of the groups The Weathermen, Hail Mary Mallon (with Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz), and Two Of Every Animal (with Cage). Regarding his name, he said: "I acquired the name Aesop from a movie I had acted in with some friends. It was my character's name and it sort of stuck. The rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes."
Bavitz was born at Syosset Hospital in Syosset, New York and raised in Northport, Long Island, New York to his father Paul and mother Jameija. Ian has two brothers: Chris (born 1975) and Graham (born 1977). Ian, along with his siblings, was raised Catholic but later on in his life became agnostic. Bavitz attended Northport High School in 1990 and graduated in 1994. He married Allyson Baker, guitarist and vocalist of rock band Dirty Ghosts in 2005. They now reside in San Francisco, California. The couple has now since divorced.

Camu Tao
Camu Tao (born Tero Smith, June 26, 1977 – May 25, 2008) was an American rapper and producer who was signed to the Definitive Jux label. He was a member of several groups: S.A. Smash (with fellow rapper Metro), the underground hiphop supergroup Weathermen, Central Services (with fellow producer El-P), and the music collective Cardboard City.
He was also part of Columbus, Ohio's MHz crew with Copywrite, RJD2, Jakki Tha MotaMouth & Tage Proto. Partnering with Cage to form The Nighthawks, the two crafted an album during a single-three day creative session.
Smith died on May 25, 2008, after a two-year battle with lung cancer. At the time of his death, he was producing a song for Cage's I Never Knew You EP and working on his first solo for Definitive Jux. On July 9, 2009, El-P announced via Twitter that the album, King of Hearts, was finished, and would be released on October 20, 2009.King of Hearts was released on August 17, 2010 by Definitive Jux in collaboration with Fat Possum Records along with a free download EP from Central Services. Cool Calm Pete
Cool Calm Pete is a Korean American rapper and producer with a sometimes hypnotically slow, lazy-sounding rapping style. Pete was born in Seoul, Korea and raised in Queens, New York. Pete is one of the three members of the hip-hop group Babbletron. Cool Calm Pete's debut solo album Lost was released in the United States on Embedded Music, and released in Europe on Definitive Jux. He has since released a 9 track EP entitled "Loosies," featuring several remixes of his older work. Cool Calm Pete has been profiled in major publications such as Urb, and XXL. Cool Calm Pete is known to be an avid New York Mets fan. He can almost always be seen wearing a New York Mets fitted cap. Cool Calm Pete attended Cooper Union and received his BFA in fine art.

DJ Krush
Hideaki Ishi (石 英明, Ishi Hideaki?) (born 1962, Tokyo, Japan), better known as DJ Krush, is a producer and DJ. He is known for his atmospheric instrumental production which incorporates sound elements from nature and extensive use of jazz and soul samples.
Ishi was born in 1962 in Tokyo. Ishi dropped out of school at an early age and joined a local gang, and a few years later, the yakuza. Early into his career as a yakuza underling, Ishi discovered a severed finger wrapped in paper on his desk. Later, after discovering that it had belonged to his best friend, he decided to leave the yakuza and cut ties with the criminal underworld.
In the early 1980s, Ishi went to the movies with his girlfriend and saw the film Wild Style, the first hip hop motion picture directed by Charlie Ahearn. He was inspired to become a hip hop musician, and made the firm decision to become a DJ. The day after seeing this movie, he headed to instrument shops looking for equipment. At this time the term "mixer" was unknown to most of Tokyo's electronic store salesmen. After a hard time buying the things he needed, Ishi started his career as one of the first hip hop artists in Japan.

Mike Ladd has toured extensively for several years throughout America, Europe and Asia, establishing a cult following in the process.

Muddy Waters
McKinley Morganfield (April 4, 1913 – April 30, 1983), known as Muddy Waters, was an American blues musician, generally considered the "father of modern Chicago blues". He was a major inspiration for the British blues explosion in the 1960s, and was ranked No. 17 in Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 100 Greatest Artists of All Time.
Although in his later years Muddy usually said that he was born in Rolling Fork, Mississippi, in 1915, he was actually born at Jug's Corner in neighboring Issaquena County, Mississippi, in 1913. Recent research has uncovered documentation showing that in the 1930s and 1940s he reported his birth year as 1913 on both his marriage license and musicians' union card. A 1955 interview in the Chicago Defender is the earliest claim of 1915 as his year of birth, which he continued to use in interviews from that point onward. The 1920 census lists him as five years old as of March 6, 1920, suggesting that his birth year may have been 1914. The Social Security Death Index, relying on the Social Security card application submitted after his move to Chicago in the mid 1940s, lists him as being born April 4, 1915. Muddy's gravestone lists his birth year as 1915.

RJD2
RJD2 (born Ramble John "RJ" Krohn on May 27, 1976) is an American music producer, singer and musician. RJD2 was born in Eugene, Oregon, and raised in Columbus, Ohio. He currently resides in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was signed to the Definitive Jux label where he released two largely instrumental hip hop albums and has produced tracks for many prominent rappers. However, he has now left Def Jux and has signed with XL Recordings. His 2007 album, The Third Hand, is a striking departure from his usual style and features RJD2 singing and playing instruments on nearly every track.
In 2009, RJD2 established his own label, RJ’s Electrical Connections and reissued three early records as well as a box set. RJD2’s new full length The Colossus was released on January 19, 2010 on his new label, which is distributed by The Orchard.
RJD2's work has been used heavily in media and advertisement, particularly the singles "The Horror" and "Ghostwriter". Since 2007, RJD2's "A Beautiful Mine" has been the theme song for AMC's Mad Men.

Rob Sonic is a hip hop artist from The Bronx. He is a member of Sonic Sum and Hail Mary Mallon.
As a child growing up, Rob Sonic devoted himself to many styles of music. He was a follower of artists such as The Beatles, Run DMC, Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, Public Enemy, Muddy Waters, Ultramagnetic MC's, The Clash among many others.
In 2000, Rob Sonic gained critical acclaim as the front man of the group Sonic Sum, whose first album The Sanity Annex won rave reviews in the United States, Europe and Japan, with Spin voting it the "2nd Best Album of the Year that No One Heard". Word got around and soon came offers from artists like DJ Krush and Funkstörung to work with them on their albums, a collaboration with Slug and Mike Ladd, as well as shout outs from Radiohead, Bobbito Garcia, Autechre and others.
During 2003, Rob Sonic signed to Definitive Jux after he and label head El-P realised they shared the same management. He released the first solo album Telicatessen on the label in 2004, along with the second solo album Sabotage Gigante in 2007. The song "Sniper Picnic" from Telicatessen was featured in the game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Also, the song "Brand New Vandals" was featured in the game Skate 3. He appears on the tracks "Dark Heart News" and "The Harbor Is Yours" from Aesop Rock's album None Shall Pass in 2007.

Ryan was over again, and we were up all night playing retro games. This was actually the last game we played before quitting for the night (we never did sleep though, i feel like crap today), but i'm uploading it first CUZ I CAN. Never actually seen the end of this game before, and we were actually getting scared we wouldn't make it with how many lives we had stockpiled after the hard time we had at the Metropolis zones. Ryan pulls through though. Also at the end I put in some cheats and run around as Super Sonic, lololol. Fun stuff.

SO we decided to tear it up in the VS multiplayer like old times. I happened to have my capture card set up cuz im working on a new project, this is kind of a break video. Also i set up audacity cuz our trash talk is amazing. We MAY have been drinkin so this video isnt for kiddies haha. Enjoy. I dont wanna spoil the end but IF***ing won.

Ryan was over again, and we were up all night playing retro games. This was actually the last game we played before quitting for the night (we never did sleep though, i feel like crap today), but i'm uploading it first CUZ I CAN. Never actually seen the end of this game before, and we were actually getting scared we wouldn't make it with how many lives we had stockpiled after the hard time we had at the Metropolis zones. So me(playing as Sonic) and my Buddy Rob(Playing as Shadow), who you may recognise in older vids, were hanging out one night, and I just recently got back my Copy of Sonic Adventure 2 Battle, which i havent seen in YEARS. SO we decided to tear it up in the VS multiplayer like old times. I happened to have my capture card set up cuz im working on a new project, this is kind of a break video. As a child growing up, Rob Sonic devoted himself to many styles of music. He was a follower of artists such as The Beatles, Run DMC, Kraftwerk, Talking Heads, Led Zeppelin, Public Enemy, Muddy Waters, Ultramagnetic MC's, The Clash among many others.
In 2000, Rob Sonic gained critical acclaim as the front man of the group Sonic Sum, whose first album The Sanity Annex won rave reviews in the United States, Europe and Japan, with Spin voting it the "2nd Best Album of the Year that No One Heard". Word got around and soon came offers from artists like DJ Krush and Funkstörung to work with them on their albums, a collaboration with Slug and Mike Ladd, as well as shout outs from Radiohead, Bobbito Garcia, Autechre and others.
During 2003, Rob Sonic signed to Definitive Jux after he and label head El-P realised they shared the same management. He released the first solo album Telicatessen on the label in 2004, along with the second solo album Sabotage Gigante in 2007. The song "Sniper Picnic" from Telicatessen was featured in the game Tony Hawk's American Wasteland. Also, the song "Brand New Vandals" was featured in the game Skate 3. He appears on the tracks "Dark Heart News" and "The Harbor Is Yours" from Aesop Rock's album None Shall Pass in 2007.
In 2011, Rob Sonic released an album Are You Gonna Eat That? with Aesop Rock and DJ Big Wiz under the alias Hail Mary Mallon. The album was released on Rhymesayers Entertainment.

Ian Matthias Bavitz (born June 5, 1976), better known by his stage name Aesop Rock, is an American hip hop artist and producer. He was at the forefront of the new wave of underground and alternative hip hop acts that emerged during the late 1990s and early 2000s (decade). He was signed to El-P's Definitive Jux label until it went on hiatus in 2010.[2] The music site betterPropaganda ranked him at number 19 at the Top 100 Artists of the Decade.[3] He is a member of the groups The Weathermen, Hail Mary Mallon (with Rob Sonic & DJ Big Wiz), and Two Of Every Animal (with Cage).[4][5] Regarding his name, he said: "I acquired the name Aesop from a movie I had acted in with some friends. It was my character's name and it sort of stuck. The rock part came later just from throwing it in rhymes."[6]

[edit] Early and personal life, the beginnings (1976–1994)
Bavitz was born at Syosset Hospital in Syosset, New York and raised in Northport, Long Island, New York to his father Paul and mother Jameija.[7] Ian has two brothers: Chris (born 1975) and Graham (born 1977). Ian, along with his siblings, was raised Catholic but later on in his life became agnostic.[8] Bavitz attended Northport High School in 1990 and graduated in 1994. He married Allyson Baker, guitarist and vocalist of rock band Dirty Ghosts in 2005. They now reside in San Francisco, California. The couple has now since divorced.[9]
He has tattoos on each forearm. His left arm says the words "Must Not Sleep...", and the right says "Must Warn Others," which are quotes inspired by the 1956 film Invasion of the Body Snatchers. Aesop Rock has used these quotes as lyrics in the chorus of his song "Commencement at the Obedience Academy": "Must not sleep; must warn others / Trust blocks creep where the dust storm hovers." He also used them in his song "Antisocial," in the line "Must not sleep; must warn others / I'll tourniquet your turbulence then trample on your stutters."

After graduating from high school, Bavitz went off to Massachusetts where he attended Boston University, a private research college. He studied fine arts and eventually acquired his bachelors in 1998.[10] This is where he met his future producer, Blockhead where he too was aspiring to be an MC until he first met Ian in '94, the one year he attended Boston University. After hearing him freestyle, he decided to put his dreams of rapping aside and focused on producing instead.[11] Blockhead was involved with a crew in New York called The Overground that consisted of him, some of his friends, & Dub-L.[12] This is how Dub became a part of Bavitz music production earlier on in his career. Aesop Rock is on the prestigious B.U. Wall of Fame, along with people like Howard Stern and Bill O’Reilly. He is also part of Boston U's Board of Trustees as well.[13]
Musical career[link]
1985-1995: N.Y.C. underground music scene[link]
As a youth, Ian and his family would usually commute to New York City. This had a great impact on him and the way he viewed the hip hop culture. Bavitz began rapping in the early 1990s. He states Public Enemy, BDP, KMD, and Run DMC as being his early influences.[6] Bavitz also listened to rock acts such as The Dead Kennedys, Fugazi, and Ministry; he was introduced to these groups by his older brother Chris.[14] Bavitz started to play instruments such as the piano and bass at an early age. He then eventually acquired a sampler.[15]
1996-1998: Early musical efforts[link]
While attending college, Bavitz initially recorded and released two self-financed efforts, Music for Earthworms (1997), a full-length featuring underground artist Percee P on two tracks. Bavitz also released a music video to "Abandon All Hope", which was one of the tracks on the CD. The album sold over 300 copies,[14] largely from a grassroots internet-based promotion at his website AesopRock.com and then-popular web portal, MP3.Com.[16] It was a success. With the money he made from his previous release, he then released his Appleseed EP in 1999 which received critical acclaim in the underground hip hop circuit.[citation needed] Both of his early records were produced by long-time friend Blockhead, and underground producer Dub-L. He completed these albums while also working as a waiter.[citation needed]
1999-2001: Record label acquisition, major debut, and breakdown[link]
After his breakthrough success in the underground hip hop and indie rap community, he was eventually noticed by the Mush label and obtained his first record deal in 1999, just a year after he graduated from college. Aesop released his first major album, Float (2000), with guest appearances from Vast Aire, Slug, and Dose One. Production was split between Blockhead and Aesop himself, with one track by Omega One. During this time, Aesop worked at a photography gallery.[17] In August 2001 tragedy struck – Bavitz had a nervous breakdown. His song "One of Four" on his Daylight E.P. documents his struggles.[18]
Def Jux years (2001–2007)[link]
[edit] 2001–2002: Labor Days, Daylight EP, and Billboard breakthrough
Shortly after releasing Float, Aesop Rock signed to Manhattan-based label Definitive Jux (commonly shortened to Def Jux), where he released Labor Days (2001), an album dedicated to the discussion of labor in American society and the concept of "wage slaves". This album was most well known for its single "Daylight".[citation needed] Because of its popularity, Daylight was re-released in 2002 as a seven-track EP, including an "alternative" new version of the song "Night Light", whose paraphrased lyrics simultaneously refer back to, and stand in stark opposition to, the original's. The song "Labor" (from Labor Days) was featured in Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 4; it also was the first album in his catalog to break through the Billboard charts, peaking at number 15 at the United States Independent Charts, giving Aesop Rock more recognition.
2003–2004: Bazooka Tooth and Compilation[link]
Labor Days was followed by Bazooka Tooth in 2003. For the first time, production was mostly handled by Rock himself, with three tracks from longtime collaborator Blockhead and one from close friend and Definitive Jux label CEO El-P. Guest appearances include Party Fun Action Committee, El-P, and Mr. Lif (all Definitive Jux labelmates) and Camp Lo. With this release Aesop hit a higher level of recognition, releasing "No Jumper Cables" as a single and music video, then another single, "Sary Jane", shortly after. A remix of "No Jumper Cables" was featured on Tony Hawk's Underground 2, furthering Aesop's recognition. In 2004, He released Build Your Own Bazooka Tooth and created a contest in which you had to create a remix of an Aesop Rock song using the a cappellas and instrumentals.
2005–2006: Fast Cars EP and The Weathermen[link]
In February 2005, Aesop Rock released a new EP, Fast Cars, Danger, Fire and Knives. The first pressing of the EP included an 88-page booklet with lyrics from every release from Float until this EP (the lyric booklet is titled The Living Human Curiosity Sideshow); later pressings of the album come without the booklet, but with an additional bonus track, "Facemelter". In addition, a limited number of albums were available direct from Def Jux with Aesop Rock's graffiti tag on them. In response to demands from his fans, Rock did less production on the EP: three songs are produced by Blockhead, three produced by Aesop, and one by Rob Sonic. During this time he was asked to join the Weathermen to replace Vast Aire.
2007: Deal with Nike+iPod, None Shall Pass, and Hiatus[link]
Aesop Rock was commissioned to create a 45-minute instrumental track for the Nike+iPod running system, entitled All Day. It was released in February 2007. Distributed via the iTunes Music Store and featuring his wife Allyson Baker on guitar and scratches from DJ Big Wiz, Aesop has described the release as "something that evolved enough that the sound was constantly fresh and attractive, as though the runner were moving through a set of differing cities or landscapes."[19]
All Day was followed in August of the same year by Bavitz's fifth full-length album, None Shall Pass (2007). The album also contained original artwork by Jeremy Fish. About Jeremy Fish, Aesop Rock said: "Man that guy is my hero. We have a friend in common who hit me up a while back saying that this guy Jeremy Fish had an opportunity to pitch a cartoon to Disney and wanted me to be involved in the music side. I flipped out cuz I was also a fan of his, and owned some of his work." Aesop Rock also teamed up with Jeremy Fish again in a project called Ghosts of the Barbary Coast. Aesop Rock made a song called "Tomorrow Morning", to go along with a slideshow of drawings that Jeremy Fish drew. This was displayed in San Francisco, but was also made available for download online.[20]
When El-P announced that the label, although it will carry on selling its catalog and merchandise, it would be put "on hiatus". Bavitz has since been absent when it came to making any new albums or EPs, albeit being featured on other artist records and producing.
[edit] 2008–present: Rhymesayers, Rob Sonic, Kimya Dawson, and Skelethon
In 2009, Bavitz produced Felt's third album, Felt 3: A Tribute To Rosie Perez. In November 2011, Bavitz announced via Reddit that he is working on his next solo album, and has a majority of it complete.[21]
On April 20, 2011, it was announced that Rhymesayers Entertainment would release Hail Mary Mallon's debut album Are You Going To Eat That?. A music video for their first single off the album Smock was announced that same day.[22]
Aesop Rock is also reportedly working on an album with anti-folk singer Kimya Dawson, famous for being one half of group The Moldy Peaches.[23] The working title for the project is called Hokey Fright, while the group has been named The Uncluded.[24]
On January 17, 2012, it was reported that Aesop Rock finished recording his upcoming solo album Skelethon, and it is scheduled to be released July 10, 2012 through Rhymesayers Entertainment.[25]
On April 10, 2012, The first official single Zero Dark Thirty off of Aesop Rock's Rhymesayers debut album Skelethon was released on both SoundCloud and YouTube. As of April 20, 2012 the song had already received a combined plays/views of 86,434 on the official YouTube and SoundCloud pages.[26]
Lyrics[link]
Bavitz's lyrics are generally seen as complex and abstract while others[who?] just dismiss it as logorrhea or inscrutable ramblings. Critics state that the use of words can be so detailed that it becomes difficult to determine their originally intended meaning.[27] The interpretation is highly subjective, because the messages conveyed are not always clearly defined. The lyrics are sometimes inspired by events which have occurred in Bavitz's personal life.[28][29]
Questioned about his lyrical style in an interview, Bavitz responded:
It’s probably because it’s not the most accessible music in the world. It may pose a slight challenge to the listener beyond your average pop song. I'm no genius by a long shot, but these songs are not nonsensical, that's pretty preposterous. I'd have to be a genius to pull this many nonsensical records over people's eyes. Yak Ballz, born Yashar Zadeh is an American independent hip hop artist, who was brought up in Flushing, Queens, New York. He is one of the original members of The Weathermen. He is also a member of Cardboard City.

Early life[link]
In his youth, Yak spent a lot of his time using his imagination and creativity to draw and paint. He became enamored with the rebel art of graffiti. He was inspired by Cost, Revs, Uend, and his TCK (True City Killers) brethren. Yak turned to writing as an outlet for expression and a form of therapy due to his mother being overprotective about their neighborhood in Queens at the time. Thanks to his best friend’s older brother, Vaz (of 89.9-FM WKCR’s legendary “Night Train” hip-hop show), while in high school Yak landed a gig interning at Bobbito Garcia’s Footwork store in downtown Manhattan where he saw a myriad of flyers promoting Hip Hop shows all over the city. At the age of 16 he entered the Braggin’ Rites MC battle; he took second place and was the youngest person in the competition. Yak would go on to achieve first runner-up honors two more times after that, but more importantly, the aspiring MC grabbed the attention of several interested people in attendance, including Armando “Mondee” Torres and Brett Scott, who approached Vaz about getting Yak to appear on their new mixtape.[1] At the urging of Vaz, the MC agreed to work with Mondee. This would lead to a lasting music relationship.
Breaking Out[link]
Bobbito Garcia, world renown radio personality known for breaking records and introducing new talent in New York City during the Indie Hip Hop boom in the mid to late 90’s, liked Yak’s demo, Flossin’, so much that he put it in rotation on his CM Famalam show on 89.9-FM WKCR in New York. He later invited Yak to appear on the show in 1998. After a few impressive appearances on WKCR, and Flossin’ gaining regular rotation, Bobbito approached Yak about some new original music. Yak's lyrics caught the attention of Cage, who was impressed enough to reach out to him; making him an original member of The Weathermen.
Followup Releases[link]
Soon after, Yak released his first 12-inch, Homepiss in 2000, courtesy of Bobbito and his Fondle’em label. His 4-song EP was released featuring Flossin', The Plague, Nasty or Nice, and Homepiss.[2]
The Freakshow[link]
In 2001, Yak followed up the EP with a stand-out 3 song vinyl 12-inch, The Freakshow,[3] which was one of the first ever 12-inch releases by the indie Hip Hop label Definitive Jux.Vinyl specialty stores and Web sites quickly sold out of the three-song 12-inch that featured cover art by TCK brother Ewok One 5MH.[citation needed] El-P even included The Freak Show on 2002’s Definitive Jux Presents 2 compilation album.
While You Where Sleeping[link]
In 2003, he released While You Were Sleeping b/w The Drill 12-inch with Traffic Entertainment. Once Eastern Conference Records, then home to fellow Weathermen; Cage and Tame One, heard of this single they moved to sign Yak to an album deal. After working on The Weathermen’s Conspiracy mixtape (2003)[4] Yak Ballz released his first album, My Claim[5] in 2004 with guest appearances from both Cage and Tame One. He worked with producer Mondee for production and engineer Joe Raia. His lyrical content on My Claim was fueled by his Queens life and college experiences. After leaving Eastern Conference, Yak put out a mixtape in 2005, The Missing Cassettes consisting of rare and unreleased material.
Scifentology[link]
In 2006 he released Scifentology, a mixtape put out by Yak himself and Scifen clothing company which features cover art by Ewok One 5MH.[6] Yak’s lyrics became more introspective and the beats changed on Scifentology by relying more on rock and synthesized instrumentation[citation needed]. The mixtape started as an innocent idea and promotional tool to help cross-market Yak with the Scifen clothing brand, but it quickly became one of the most talked-about mixtapes of the year within the indie Hip Hop world in ‘06[citation needed].
Scifentology II[link]
January 2008, Yak released his sophomore effort, Scifentology II[7] on FloSpot Records in conjunction with Scifen Clothing. Scifentology II features production from the likes of Aesop Rock, the late Camu Tao, Mondee, Chapter 7, Adept, and Chris Maestro TCK. It also has guest appearances from Cage, Tame One and Slow Suicide Stimulus. The album is packed tight with cathartic rhymes of grit, wit, shuddering images, and has received critical acclaim[citation needed]. Ewok One 5MH, premier urban artist and senior designer for Scifen clothing, also designed Scifentology II's full-color cover. Feb 2009, “Dirt Empire,” produced by Aesop Rock, won the MTVu Best Freshman Video with over 40,000 views.[8]
Current Work and Education[link]
Currently, Yak is working on a extended play called 'Gas Galaxy', due out on Definitive Jux sometime in fall of 2009. Yak has performed the title song in support of Cage's Depart From Me tour. Yak is a graduate from New Paltz State University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Management.[1]
