Ukrainian History: WWI To Present
A look at Ukraine's current unrest through the lens of modern historical events. As the dust settled after World War I, Ukraine was defeated and divided and the Soviets controlled much of the country. In 1922 Ukraine, along with Russia, became the founding members of the Soviet Union... It was made worse by the policies of the new head of the communist party, Joseph Stalin. Then came the Great Terror: Two waves of Stalinist political repression and persecution in the Soviet Union resulted in the killing of some 681,000 people; including 80 percent of the Ukrainian cultural elite and three-quarters of all the Ukrainian Red Army's higher-ranking officers. Then came the outbreak of WWII. German armies invaded the Soviet Union in June 1941, beginning four straight years of non-stop total war. In the battle of Kiev, Axis troops encircled and laid siege to the capital city. More than 600,000 Soviet soldiers were killed or taken captive there. The total losses inflicted upon the Ukrainian population during the war are estimated between five and eight million, including over half a million Jews killed by Nazi death squads, sometimes with the help of local collaborators. Ukraine produced many prominent Soviet sports players, scientists, and artists over this period as well as much of the Soviet leadership, including Leonid Brezhnev, who ousted Khrushchev and became the Soviet leader from 1964 to 1982. Then, on 26 April 1986, a reactor in the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant exploded, resulting in the worst nuclear reactor accident in history. But then the economy immediately sank into depression and lost 60 percent of its GDP from '91 to '99. A new currency, the hryvnia, was introduced in 1996. The economy was stabilized by the end of the 1990's. Corruption under Ukraine's second president set the stage for the 2004 ascendence of then Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych to the Presidency in elections that the Ukrainian Supreme Court ruled were rigged. Yanukovych was then thrown out of power in the peaceful Orange Revolution in favor of opposition leaders Viktor Yushchenko and Yulia Tymoshenko, who became President and Prime Minister. Yanukovych then regained the Prime Ministership in 2006, but lost a snap election just a year later that saw Tymoshenko become Prime Minister again. This map of those 2007 election results shows just how divided Ukraine is politically. Then came the January 2009 natural gas crisis in which Russia stopped supplying gas to Ukraine in the middle of winter. Since Ukraine is itself the main supply route to much of Europe, this was a pretty big problem. Tymoshenko eventually signed an agreement to reopen the pipes, but not before Ukraine incurred major economic losses. As a result of the political fallout, Yanukovych - who just does not go away - was elected President again in 2010. And in October, 2011, Tymoshenko was sentenced to seven years in prison for abuse of office because she signed the natural gas deal with Russian President Vladimir Putin. In 2012 the European Union and Ukraine began negotiations for it to join the 28-nation group. President Viktor Yanukovych urged the parliament to adopt laws so that Ukraine would meet the EU's criteria. Bringing us to the 3-month old Euromaidan protests which began at the end of 2013 when Yanukovych - who was feeling the economic pressure - abruptly suspended efforts to join the EU. He then turned around and signed an agreement with Putin, who offered $15 billion in financial aid and a 33% discount on Russian natural gas. As a result, the protests have escalated and become more violent, with many now calling for the ouster of Yanukovych and a rejection of the Russian deal in favor of a complete embrace of Europe.- published: 22 Feb 2014

Russian armed forces alert prompts Ukrainian mobilisation
The sound of Kremlin sabre-rattling is being clearly heard in Kyiv as 150,000 Russian troops, hundreds of tanks and planes perform military exercises close to the Ukrainian border. Forces in Russia's Western and Central sectors have been placed on "combat ready" alert, and the sectors' air wings have been mobilised to fly patrols. Ukraine has warned Russia that any straying over the border during the manoeuvres will be considered as an act of agression, and warnings over Russian intervention i... Awsome video of former Ukrainian president Yanukovych empty luxury estate.
Awsome video of former Ukrainian president Yanukovych empty luxury estate.
A vast country estate, marble-lined mansions, a private golf course and zoo: the unimaginable luxury of the private residence of departed Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych was flung open for all to see. As parliament voted to oust Yanukovych Saturday and he fled to a pro-Russian bastion in east Ukraine after months of bloody protest against his rule, thousands of Ukrainians wandered awestruck around the breathtaking luxury of his abandoned property some 15 kilometres (10 miles) from Kiev after it was taken by demonstrators. "I am in shock," said retired military servicewoman Natalia Rudenko, as she looked out over the manicured lawns studded with statues of rabbits and deers. "In a country with so much poverty how can one person have so much -- he has to be mentally sick. "The world needs to see this and bring him to justice." Cars backed up for kilometers and a large crowd queued patiently at the imposing wrought iron front gates to get a glimpse of the former leader's lavish lifestyle -- fit for even the most ostentatious billionaire oligarch. "Don't worry, everyone will get to go inside -- it is big enough for all of you," an opposition activist standing atop a column shouted through a loudhailer. He warned people to stay off the lawn in case of landmines and to beware of provocateurs trying to damage the place. "Welcome to Ukraine," he said as people shuffled by. Guarded just hours before by elite security forces, the property -- the scale of which had been kept a closely guarded secret and appears to confirm suspicions of titanic corruption -- was now under the control of anti-Yanukovych activists, patrolling the area and keeping people out of buildings to avoid looting. According to official declarations, Yanukovych's salary as president was around $100,000 a year. The luxury of the estate clearly showed wealth far beyond that. At the entrance a sign was hung reading: "People, do not destroy this evidence of thieving arrogance." Inside, visitors peered with disbelief through the windows of the palatial main house at the baroque, marble-covered living rooms decorated with gold icons and suits of armor. A few boxes strewn around on the marble floors hinted at a hurried exit. Amused or enraged, others posed for photos in font of towering faux-Greek columns and snapped pictures on their mobile phones of the collection of rare pheasants -- imported from as far as Mongolia and Sumatra. For kilometers, they strolled along the waterfront promenade, up to the helicopter pad or over bridges and past horse paddocks to a vast garage housing a museum of Soviet military vehicles. The complex for staff -- who were nowhere to be seen -- was itself the size of a British stately home. "Mum, where's the golden toilet?" five-year old Ross asked as his mother led him around the edge of a floating banquet hall built to look like an Elizabethan galleon. "I also want a pirate ship like this for myself," he said. "Don't worry, we've already seized this one," his mother Katya Ivanova replied. Some of the visitors were still fresh from the violent clashes that left scores dead this week and saw central Kiev turned into a war zone. "It makes it feel even more worth it," said Bogdan Panchyshin, a hardware store owner from the Western city of Lvov. "If only the hundred people who died could see it, I think they'd say the same," he said, still wearing a camouflage bullet proof vest. As they emerged, people struggled to take in the breathtaking scale of Yanukovych's wealth. "That house, that garden, that luxury," mechanic Viktor Kovalchuk, 59, as his wife shook her head in amazement. "It should be turned into a hospital or an orphanage or something for the people killed or injured in the protests," Kovalchuk said. "Whatever happens it needs to be given to the people. It was built with our money after all so it should serve us in the end."- published: 24 Feb 2014

Former Ukrainian president Yanukovich luxury residence Mezhyhirya was open to public
Former Ukrainian president V. Yanukovich`s luxury residence was open to public. Mezhyhirya (Ukrainian: Межигір'я) was the private residence of former President of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych in the village Novi Petrivtsi, Vyshhorod Raion, which he occupies since 2002.The estate is over 140 ha (350 acres) and is situated on the banks of the Dnieper river (Kiev Reservoir). In 1935-2007 Mezhyhirya was a state government residence until it was turned into a private property. In 2012 the State Administration of Affairs rented a space from Tantalit for 99,691 hryvnia per year arranging it for official receptions. Internet newspaper Ukrayinska Pravda in its journalist investigation published a number of documents that confirm a link between those organizations-tenants, family members of Yanukovych and his entourage. The 140-hectares Mezhyhirya complex is enclosed by a five meter tall fence with length along the perimeter of 54 km (34 mi).On its territory are located a yacht pier, equestrian club, shooting range, tennis court and many other recreational tourism complexes as well as hunting grounds.Lease of 1 ha (2.5 acres) in Mezhyhirya for Yanukovych costs 314 hryvnia per month (2010) which is about $39.57 according to the exchange rate.- published: 22 Feb 2014

Tymoshenko's return to Ukrainian politics
Tymoshenko's return to Ukrainian politics
When Yanukovich came to power in 2010, he led the charge against Timoshenko for abuse of power. The accusation was that her energy negotiations with Russia were based on her personal interests, and there is certainly some truth to the story. I personnally think that both Yanukovich and Timoshenko had huge corrupt dealings. But in essence this was a politicelly motivated trial, because Yanukovich nullified his political opponent. And what happened next is even more important, European leaders rallied behind Timoshenko and condemned it as political persecution. And many of Europe's biggest media entrerprises depicted Timoshenko as a pro-Western hero, when in fact she never was pro-West, for that matter she wasnt pro-Russian either. But there is a gap between the reality and her iconic portrayal in the media.
