Pyrgi lies 25 km from the city of Chios, is one of the villages maintained as it was built. Features that make the village unique are the narrow streets, numerous churches and the 13th century Byzantine church of the Holy Apostles. Pyrgi has become a preserved monument. The houses are tightly bound to each other to form a compact structure, built that way as protection from the frequent raids by pirates and the Turks. Residents could enter and leave the village only through a door which is currently located at Kato Porta (Lower Door).

Το Πυργί είναι το μεγαλύτερο μεσαιωνικό χωριό της Χίου και απέχει 25 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη. Είναι το «ζωγραφιστό χωριό», όπως το αποκαλούν πολλοί λόγω των περίτεχνων διακοσμητικών μοτίβων στις προσόψεις των οικημάτων. Παρ' όλες τις αλλοιώσεις που επέφεραν σ' αυτό ο χρόνος και οι ανθρώπινες επεμβάσεις, το Πυργί αποτελεί ακόμη και σήμερα ένα ζωντανό μεσαιωνικό θρύλο.
Η πολεοδομική του διάρθρωση και η αρχιτεκτονική του μορφή προκαλούν τεράστιο ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον. Η οχυρωματική του διάταξη είναι αντιπροσωπευτική για την αντιμετώπιση των εχθρικών επιδρομών.
Εκείνο όμως που γοητεύει τον επισκέπτη με την πρώτη ματιά είναι τα Πυργούσικα σπίτια με τα «ξυστά», τύπος διακόσμησης της πρόσοψης με γεωμετρικά σχήματα σε μαύρο και άσπρο. Η τεχνική βασίζεται στη μαύρη άμμο του επιχρίσματος, η οποία αφού ασπριστεί με επιμέλεια, ξύνεται ακολουθώντας απλά ή σύνθετα μοτίβα και δίνει μαύρα θέματα πάνω σε λευκό φόντο που θυμίζουν τα ιταλικά sgraffiti. Η τεχνική αυτή του εξωτερικού στολισμού αγαπήθηκε από τους ντόπιους και για το λόγο αυτό την διατήρησαν ζωντανή μέχρι τις μέρες μας.
Pyrgi is the largest medieval village of Chios located at a 25-kilometre-distance from Chios town. It is often called the “painted village” because of the detailed decorative motives on the buildings’ facades. Despite the transformations it has gone under during the years, Pyrgi still maintains its medieval scent. It has architectural interest. Its defensive design is typical of the southern villages.
The houses of Pyrgi however, with their unique decorative designs of black and white geometrical shapes, known as “xysta”, dominate the visitors’ eyes. This decorative technique reminds of the Italian sgraffiti.

Pyrgi
Pyrgi was an ancient Etruscan port in Latium, central Italy, to the north-west of Caere. Its location is now occupied by the burgh of Santa Severa.
Remains of its defensive walls exist in polygonal blocks of limestone and sandstone, neatly jointed. They enclosed a rectangular area some 200 m in width and at least 220 m in length. The south-west extremity has probably been destroyed by the sea. It contained a rich temple of Leucothea, the foundation of which was ascribed to the Pelasgi. It was plundered by Dionysius in 384 BC. Later it became dependent on Caere, though it is not probable that it was originally merely the harbour of Caere; Alsium was c. 8 km (5 mi) to the south.
The Romans established a colony here, which is first mentioned in 191 BC. Later still it supplied fish to Rome, and became a favorite summer resort, as did also Punicum (Santa Marinella), 8 km (5 mi) to the north-west, where are many remains of villas. Both were stations on the coast road (Via Aurelia).
In 1957 excavations found the remains of a large temple with a triple-cella arrangement. The Pyrgi Tablets, containing texts in Phoenician and Etruscan languages, were found here in 1964.

Το Πυργί είναι το μεγαλύτερο μεσαιωνικό χωριό της Χίου και απέχει 25 χιλιόμετρα από την πόλη. Είναι το «ζωγραφιστό χωριό», όπως το αποκαλούν πολλοί λόγω των περίτεχνων διακοσμητικών μοτίβων στις προσόψεις των οικημάτων. Παρ' όλες τις αλλοιώσεις που επέφεραν σ' αυτό ο χρόνος και οι ανθρώπινες επεμβάσεις, το Πυργί αποτελεί ακόμη και σήμερα ένα ζωντανό μεσαιωνικό θρύλο.
Η πολεοδομική του διάρθρωση και η αρχιτεκτονική του μορφή προκαλούν τεράστιο ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον. Η οχυρωματική του διάταξη είναι αντιπροσωπευτική για την αντιμετώπιση των εχθρικών επιδρομών.
Εκείνο όμως που γοητεύει τον επισκέπτη με την πρώτη ματιά είναι τα Πυργούσικα σπίτια με τα «ξυστά», τύπος διακόσμησης της πρόσοψης με γεωμετρικά σχήματα σε μαύρο και άσπρο. Η τεχνική βασίζεται στη μαύρη άμμο του επιχρίσματος, η οποία αφού ασπριστεί με επιμέλεια, ξύνεται ακολουθώντας απλά ή σύνθετα μοτίβα και δίνει μαύρα θέματα πάνω σε λευκό φόντο που θυμίζουν τα ιταλικά sgraffiti. Η τεχνική αυτή του εξωτερικού στολισμού αγαπήθηκε από τους ντόπιους και για το λόγο αυτό την διατήρησαν ζωντανή μέχρι τις μέρες μας.

Pirgi - Corfu holidays, Greece
Pirgi - http://www.onthebeach.co.uk Despite being found next door to the popular Ipsos beach, Pirgi still regularly attracts a number of visitors in the busy summer months. It is a mix of shingle along with sand and offers all the facilities you would come to expect for a commercial beach. Very much favoured by tourists in the resort, a lively atmosphere is created on the beach thanks to the bars found nearby which stay open late into the night.

Παρ' όλες τις αλλοιώσεις που επέφεραν σ' αυτό ο χρόνος και οι ανθρώπινες επεμβάσεις, το Πυργί αποτελεί ακόμη και σήμερα ένα ζωντανό μεσαιωνικό θρύλο.
Η πολεοδομική του διάρθρωση και η αρχιτεκτονική του μορφή προκαλούν τεράστιο ιστορικό ενδιαφέρον. Η οχυρωματική του διάταξη είναι αντιπροσωπευτική για την αντιμετώπιση των εχθρικών επιδρομών.
Εκείνο όμως που γοητεύει τον επισκέπτη με την πρώτη ματιά είναι τα Πυργούσικα σπίτια με τα «ξυστά», τύπος διακόσμησης της πρόσοψης με γεωμετρικά σχήματα σε μαύρο και άσπρο. Η τεχνική βασίζεται στη μαύρη άμμο του επιχρίσματος, η οποία αφού ασπριστεί με επιμέλεια, ξύνεται ακολουθώντας απλά ή σύνθετα μοτίβα και δίνει μαύρα θέματα πάνω σε λευκό φόντο που θυμίζουν τα ιταλικά sgraffiti. Η τεχνική αυτή του εξωτερικού στολισμού αγαπήθηκε από τους ντόπιους και για το λόγο αυτό την διατήρησαν ζωντανή μέχρι τις μέρες μας.
Pyrgi is the largest medieval village of Chios located at a 25-kilometre-distance from Chios town. It is often called the “painted village” because of the detailed decorative motives on the buildings’ facades. Despite the transformations it has gone under during the years, Pyrgi still maintains its medieval scent. It has architectural interest. Its defensive design is typical of the southern villages.
The houses of Pyrgi however, with their unique decorative designs of black and white geometrical shapes, known as “xysta”, dominate the visitors’ eyes. This decorative technique reminds of the Italian sgraffiti.
