Explosion of Colour - Holi
Upon hearing 'Explosion of Colour' set to be our theme for this project, Holi came to mind. For those of you that don't know, Holi is a religious spring festival celebrated by Hindus, as a festival of colours. It is primarily observed in India, but as the year passes - various other countries have taken the moment to celebrate this festival.
Now, onto the main story. I didn't just chose to base my concept around 'Holi' because it was convenient, I chose it, because it was a challenge, a hurdle I had to face, for myself. For many years now, I've constantly tried to run away from my origins, avoid the culture and essentially 'lied' to myself about my own history. I was that kid who was ashamed to be 'different', I believed that because I was born on European soil, that I was European and my Sri Lankan origins would fade away.
But then one day, my uncle snapped at me and asked me 'Why are you so ashamed to be Tamil?' - my answer was simple, we were nobody. Most people didn't know what 'Tamil' was, or where it came from, as of 2013, we don't really have a country that we call a 'home' and there was nobody successful who had Tamil background (at least to my knowledge.) And although I denied being ashamed to be Tamil, deep down I knew, that I was embarrassed and so that was my turning point, for the next week to come - all I did was research about our origin and our background. Did you know that "Tamil is one of the longest surviving classical languages in the world" or that is has "one of the richest literatures in the world", I sure didn't. Or how many have fought and given their lives to preserve this culture, this history, this civilisation!
And so I realised, although it was nineteen years late - that we were something! Everyone has a history, and everyone should be proud of who they are. Don't deny your past, because it's not what's considered the 'norm' or 'cool', learn about it, acknowledge and accept it! Yes, we weren't as successful as other nations, and a lot of our population is still stuck in poverty, but that doesn't mean we should adopt a new identity and forget our beginnings. And so me choosing to use Holi as my main concept, is me saying to everyone - yes I'm Sri Lankan. Yes I'm Tamil. And yes I'm proud of our culture and history. And I welcome you, to take a look at our culture, however weird it might be at times … Just kidding!
On a different note, I'd like to thank everyone that was involved in the making of this video, my brother for modelling in the freezing cold while wearing next to nothing, my friend Philip Plested for assisting me and throwing the powder despite it being shot at a ridiculous time in ridiculous weather conditions. My brothers Step Brother for producing the amazing music to go along with the video and the man who's helped me discover my own culture along with editing the video Hannan Malik. Surrounding yourself with talented and passionate individuals will only fuel your desire for success, and I urge you to do so …
Thank You,
Sangiev.

Harish Trivedi: A Translation Roundtable, Part 1
As part of his visit to the Hindi Urdu Flagship in April 2011, eminent Hindi scholar Harish Trivedi conducted a roundtable discussion on issues of translation with members of the UT community (including a number of HUF students and faculty). The discussion focused on three texts:
1. the opening two paragraphs of Premchand’s Rangbhumi, with two English translations (Christopher King and Madhu Jain).
2. a stanza from Kavitavali of Tulsidas, with Raymond Allchin’s English translation.
3. a mystery piece provided by Professor Trivedi.
All three are downloadable as a pdf compilation at: http://hindiurduflagship.org/assets/pdf/Trivedi_Passages.pdf
This first part of the discussion focuses on the Rangbhumi passage (the second part deals with Tulsidas and the mystery piece). Viewers will benefit from having a print-out of the pdf compilation on hand.
Trivedi is Professor of English at the University of Delhi. Here is how he describes his remarkable career:
“Glamoured by modernist British Literature while a student in a high-colonial university in a small town in north India in the innocent 1960s, I felt fortunate to get a scholarship to go to the UK and to write my doctoral thesis there on Virginia Woolf. But the experience cured me, and I returned to India with the belated epiphany that English literature was not, and never could be, my literature. This was some years before Said’s Orientalism, so the first door I knocked on was that of Comparative Literature — followed by Translation Studies, Postcolonial Studies and a critical reading of British Writing on India. When my turn came to serve as the Head of the Department of English at the University of Delhi (1997-2000), I made it my one-point agenda to catalyse a radical reform of the syllabus through which we chopped off much British dead wood in order to make room for (a) literature in English not only from the UK and the USA but from all around the globe, and (b) literature in English translation not only from Europe but also from other parts of the world, especially India. As a result, I can now spend a whole semester teaching a 1st century AD Sanskrit play, a 4th century Tamil epic, a Hindi poet from the 15th century and an Urdu poet from the 19th, not to mention a couple of trenchantly postcolonial Hindi novels. In alternating semesters I still teach Shakespeare, just to keep my hand in, while in an M. Phil. class in translation, my students and I actually soil our hands with several Indian languages as we work together on translating them into English. This is a bed of roses of liberated postcolonial pedagogy and research that I myself helped to make, and it is gratifying to lie in it.”

Antariksha Yatra
Highlights from a thematic dance production by Jayalakshmi Eshwar at Kamani, New Delhi on Sep 11, 2010.
Antariksha Sanchar is a thematic dance ensemble presented by Jayalakshmi Eshwar with her disciples along with the disciples of Shashadhar Acharya (Chhau). It is an enchanting and enlightening performance on the evolution of flight and aircrafts. Using advanced music and stage settings, the performance borrows from ancient Sanskrit and Tamil literature to present a nuanced story of the celestial beings and flying machines of yore.

007 DEVARA PADAVA NUTISU ದೇವರ ಪದವ ನುತಿಸು
DĒVARA PADAVA NUTISU
Text: Abijah Samuel (1837-1879)
Melody: Indian Traditional,
Although B. Rice in his KĪRTANEGAḶU manuscript from about 1898 provides one melody which has a lot of characteristics in common with this tune, the first known notation of DĒVARA PADAVA NUTISU was made by V.J. Samuel in his 'Kannada Lyrics', Belgaum 1956.
From his handwritten manuscript this version presented by Paul and Salome Shindhe, recorded in Kassel 2011, differs a little, but both versions are but variations of the same tune.
"Rev. Abijah Samuel (1837-1879) was one of the first fruits of the Wesleyan Theological Institutions of those days in Bangalore. His ministered labours were divided between Bangalore and the city of Mysore. He was a master of both Tamil and Kannada and had a fair knowledge of English and Hindustani. He made valuable contributions to Kannada literature, especially in the composition of lyrics adopted to Carnatic music. Many of those have received widespread popularity. He was a powerful preacher both to Christian congregations and non-Christians." - quoted from: Masihi Sangeet. Christian Lyrics of India, 1961, page 27
