20th Century Fox finally confirmed that Deadpool 2 is indeed moving forward last week, with director Tim Miller back in the director's chair and the entire creative team intact. But that was about all we got in terms of news on the sequel, though luckily Collider's own Steve Weintraub recently sat down with Deadpool director Tim Miller for an exclusive interview, during which the Deadpool sequel (and its predecessor) was discussed at length:
“I’m going to do Deadpool 2. Barring an unforeseen accident, I will be doing Deadpool 2.”
Getting Miller to actually reveal anything specific regarding Deadpool 2 was a bit more difficult, and that’s because they’re still working on the script:
“The writers have been working on the script…The script comes first. You’ve got to get that.”
However, if you’re worried that this is going to be a rushed product and that Fox is making him work under pressure so they can get it by a predetermined release date, Miller seems pretty happy with the current timetable:
“None of the times that have been under discussion have made me go, ‘Oh no, you’re going to make me do something horrible just to meet that [release date].’ They want it to be great, and they’re giving us the time to make it great."
Personally, I thought Deadpool was a pretty good movie, but there’s definitely room for improvement, and Miller agrees that it’s not simply a matter of making the sequel bigger:
“I don’t look at Deadpool and think, ‘Oh, that’s a perfect movie.’ I look at it and go, ‘Oh, God, there’s so much stuff I could do better.’ What you don’t want to do is all the stupid stuff like ‘Oh, now it has to be twice as big because people are going to be bored!’ or ‘It’s going to have three times the villains!’
Miller went on to say that the first film clarified how important casting was, and that when it came to the overall size of the picture and a lot more.

Thanks to IMAX and Fox, last week I got to do something incredibly cool: I moderated a Q&A; with director Tim Miller, producer Simon Kinberg, and Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld following our special screening at IMAX HQ.
As I have said many times, I absolutely loved Deadpool and think everyone involved deserves a round of applause for getting the tone, rating, action, and characters right. All too often studios play it safe when it comes to adult material, but that didn’t happen with Deadpool. Fox deserves a huge amount of credit for making a hard R superhero movie and not shying away from everything that makes Deadpool great. While Hollywood can be obsessed with franchises and sequels even when they’re not needed, this is one of those properties I can’t wait to see more of, and I hope after Deadpool 2 we finally get to see an X-Force movie!
During the post screening Q&A; Miller, Kinberg and Liefeld talked about IMAX, the film’s budget, the rating, the tone, Stan Lee’s reaction to watching the film, why some of T.J. Miller’s jokes had to be taken out, the state of superhero movies, how there is no director’s cut of the film but there are deleted scenes, including more from the workshop fight, what other Fox superhero movies could have an R rating, and so much more.

Few people expected Deadpool to become the massive success it became. It currently holds the record for R-rated opening weekends, worldwide R-rated film, February openings, President’s Day weekends, and the X-Men franchise among other categories. But thanks to Tim Miller making a fine, entertaining movie, the film caught on with audiences and now sits atop a giant pile of money.
Steve Weintraub caught up with Miller and asked about the film’s success among other topics. Miller was straight on his expectations, and said that he thought opening at $50 million would be great (the film opened to $132 million):
Fifty. If we could open at fifty, I would be happy. Because at the budget we were, I felt if we could open at fifty, I would get a chance to make another movie. If it didn’t, then maybe not so much. Or maybe I’d have to wait another ten years or something like that. So I was just hoping for that, and honestly, up until that Thursday when it opened, Fox was only thinking fifty. I distinctly remember a phone call from someone at Fox and they said, “I don’t know what the fuck’s going on here. I’ve never seen this before. I don’t know what this number is.” And I think it’s all due to the fans and social media and people going, “Holy shit. That didn’t suck. Let me tell my friends about it, and they’ll go and they’ll come out and say ‘Holy shit. That really didn’t suck. Let me tell a few more friends.’”
When it came to box office total worldwide, Miller was even more modest when it came to his expectations versus where Deadpool ended up, which is currently $760 million worldwide:
$250 [million] would have been amazing. I had no idea. This is ridiculous. Who would have? If I would have gotten up and said, “Yeah. We planned this,” that would be pretty ridiculous. Nobody saw this. No one planned this."
So what happens when you make a movie that blows all expectations out of the water? What’s life with the studio like now? Miller likens it to a friendly road trip:
It’s like you met some people that you liked and went on a road trip with them. And you thought you liked them when you got in the car, but after the road trip and you had all these great experiences, then you really like them. Nobody threw up in the car; nobody got thrown out of the car. So it’s that feeling. For them it’s, “We trusted you guys to make a good movie, and you made a good movie.” The love is for that. There’s nothing mercenary; at least, I don’t feel that.
And with the massive success of Deadpool, you can expect that Fox will be shelling out for more chimichangas for the next trip.
Deadpool hits Blu-ray on May 10th.

Tim Miller (born September 22, 1958 in Pasadena, California) is an American performance artist and writer, whose pieces frequently involve gay identity, marriage equality and immigration issues. He was one of the NEA Four, four performance artists whose National Endowment for the Arts grants were vetoed in 1990 by NEA chair John Frohnmayer.
Miller was born in Pasadena, California but grew up in nearby Whittier.
He has developed shows based on his personal life as a gay man and as an activist. A member of ACT UP and other campaigning organizations, Miller has participated in numerous demonstrations to call for funding of AIDS research and treatment and to promote equal rights. His civil disobedience has led to his arrest on several occasions.
I was seventeen going on eighteen and I was desperate for love and dick. I searched everywhere for it. I hung around the Whittier Public Library, leaning suggestively against the stacks in the psychology section, waiting to be picked up by some graduate student. I leaned too far, once, and almost knocked over an entire row of bookshelves.

Thanks to IMAX and Fox, last week I got to do something incredibly cool: I moderated a Q&A; with director Tim Miller, producer Simon Kinberg, and Deadpool creator Rob Liefeld following our special screening at IMAX HQ. As I have said many times, I absolutely loved Deadpool and think everyone involved deserves a round of applause for getting the tone, rating, action, and characters right. All too often studios play it safe when it comes to adult material, but that didn’t happen with Deadpool. Fox deserves a huge amount of credit for making a hard R superhero movie and not shying away from everything that makes Deadpool great. Few people expected Deadpool to become the massive success it became. It currently holds the record for R-rated opening weekends, worldwide R-rated film, February openings, President’s Day weekends, and the X-Men franchise among other categories. But that was about all we got in terms of news on the sequel, though luckily Collider's own Steve Weintraub recently sat down with Deadpool director Tim Miller for an exclusive interview, during which the Deadpool sequel (and its predecessor) was discussed at length:
“I’m going to do Deadpool 2. Barring an unforeseen accident, I will be doing Deadpool 2.”
Getting Miller to actually reveal anything specific regarding Deadpool 2 was a bit more difficult, and that’s because they’re still working on the script:
“The writers have been working on the script…The script comes first. You’ve got to get that.”
However, if you’re worried that this is going to be a rushed product and that Fox is making him work under pressure so they can get it by a predetermined release date, Miller seems pretty happy with the current timetable:
“None of the times that have been under discussion have made me go, ‘Oh no, you’re going to make me do something horrible just to meet that [release date].’ They want it to be great, and they’re giving us the time to make it great."
Personally, I thought Deadpool was a pretty good movie, but there’s definitely room for improvement, and Miller agrees that it’s not simply a matter of making the sequel bigger:
“I don’t look at Deadpool and think, ‘Oh, that’s a perfect movie.’ I look at it and go, ‘Oh, God, there’s so much stuff I could do better.’ What you don’t want to do is all the stupid stuff like ‘Oh, now it has to be twice as big because people are going to be bored!’ or ‘It’s going to have three times the villains!’
Miller went on to say that the first film clarified how important casting was, and that when it came to the overall size of the picture and a lot more.

Few people expected Deadpool to become the massive success it became. It currently holds the record for R-rated opening weekends, worldwide R-rated film, February openings, President’s Day weekends, and the X-Men franchise among other categories. But thanks to Tim Miller making a fine, entertaining movie, the film caught on with audiences and now sits atop a giant pile of money.
Steve Weintraub caught up with Miller and asked about the film’s success among other topics. Miller was straight on his expectations, and said that he thought opening at $50 million would be great (the film opened to $132 million):
Fifty. If we could open at fifty, I would be happy. Because at the budget we were, I felt if we could open at fifty, I would get a chance to make another movie. If it didn’t, then maybe not so much. Or maybe I’d have to wait another ten years or something like that. So I was just hoping for that, and honestly, up until that Thursday when it opened, Fox was only thinking fifty. I distinctly remember a phone call from someone at Fox and they said, “I don’t know what the fuck’s going on here. I’ve never seen this before. I don’t know what this number is.” And I think it’s all due to the fans and social media and people going, “Holy shit. That didn’t suck. Let me tell my friends about it, and they’ll go and they’ll come out and say ‘Holy shit. That really didn’t suck. Let me tell a few more friends.’”
When it came to box office total worldwide, Miller was even more modest when it came to his expectations versus where Deadpool ended up, which is currently $760 million worldwide:
$250 [million] would have been amazing. I had no idea. This is ridiculous. Who would have? If I would have gotten up and said, “Yeah. We planned this,” that would be pretty ridiculous. Nobody saw this. No one planned this."
So what happens when you make a movie that blows all expectations out of the water? What’s life with the studio like now? Miller likens it to a friendly road trip:
It’s like you met some people that you liked and went on a road trip with them. And you thought you liked them when you got in the car, but after the road trip and you had all these great experiences, then you really like them. Nobody threw up in the car; nobody got thrown out of the car. So it’s that feeling. For them it’s, “We trusted you guys to make a good movie, and you made a good movie.” The love is for that. There’s nothing mercenary; at least, I don’t feel that.
And with the massive success of Deadpool, you can expect that Fox will be shelling out for more chimichangas for the next trip.
Deadpool hits Blu-ray on May 10th.
