These what Adam Back, CEO of Blockstream, was up to before he became successful in the crypto/blockchain industry... Did you know... Adam Back taught himself Pascal, a programming language, while doing A levels in college? His first computer was a Sinclair ZX81 which only had 1 kb of memory but expandable up to 16 kb. In 1995, he worked with Nokia and explored the potential of e-cash protocols in cellphones. Adam was one of two individuals cited in Bitcoin's whitepaper.​ The other one was Scott Stornetta, Chief Scientist of Yugen Partners. ​ Though Adam had never met Satoshi Nakamoto and didn't contribute to Bitcoin's source code, ​he was among a small group of people who've communicated with the creator of Bitcoin. ​ Nakamoto reached out to Adam in 2009 about Hashcash and was interested if the Hashcash protocol could apply on a much larger and complex scale. Hashcash is a protocol that turns email metadata (sender/receiver info, time) into random numbers. It is a "proof-of-work system used to limit email spam and denial-of-service attacks". To get rid of these, Adam invented Hashcash. Back in the 90s, the US government didn't allow cryptographic tools to leave the country. To support and point out the absurdity of the US regulation, Adam produced and sold t-shirts that had the PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) encryption protocol printed all over them.​ Before co-founding Blockstream, Adam held senior executive roles in several companies, ​including VMware, EMC, Microsoft, PI and Zero-Knowledge Systems. Adam believed Bitcoin's infrastructure wasn't prepared for enterprise use thus the idea for Blockstream. He took over the role of CEO after Austin Hill stepped down. Over the years, Blockstream gained momentum as a leading developer on the Bitcoin Core. They hired several Bitcoin Core developers and got involved in the development of the Lightning Network.
