Ping Pong Diplomacy
By 1971, Zhuang Zedong had already won three world men's singles table tennis championships. He was a leading sports figure and was with the Chinese national team in Japan when he reached out to members of the American team. This gesture helped lead to the April 1971 visit to China by the American table tennis team. "Ping Pong Diplomacy" partially paved the way for U.S. President Richard M. Nixon's 1972 visit to China. Zhuang Zedong's Chinese national team visited the U.S. in April 1972. Mr. Zhuang became a member of the Central Committee of the Chinese Communist Party during the last years of the Cultural Revolution. After his patron, Jiang Qing was toppled in October 1976 along with the other members of the Gang of Four, Mr. Zhuang was jailed. He was subsequently cleared and took on coaching duties. During his visit to USC, Mr. Zhuang will discuss his experiences as an athlete-diplomat and offer a table tennis demonstration.- published: 28 Feb 2014

Title: Ping-pong diplomacy : 40 years later
A reception in New York commemorated the 40th anniversary of "ping-pong diplomacy"-- the series of history-making reciprocal visits by the US and Chinese national table tennis team. The August 28th reception at the Chinese consulate in New York brought together hundreds of guests from both countries who had witnessed the exchanges, including former US secretary of state Henry Kissinger, Jan Berris, vice president of the National Committee on US-China Relations, Consul General Sun Guoxiang and George Brathwaite, a member of the US table tennis team that visited China in 1971. The term "ping-pong diplomacy" describes exchanges in the early 1970s of table tennis players between the United States and China in hope of normalizing the countries' strained relations at that time. A Little White Ball Changed the Globe
A Little White Ball Changed the Globe
(LinkAsia: July 8, 2011) 40 years ago, an American table tennis team broke the icy relations between the U.S. and China. They played an exhibition game against a Chinese team in Beijing. That small event led to Richard Nixon's historic visit to China and the establishment of diplomatic and economic relations. Members of both teams from 1971 are in the U.S. to commemorate what came to be known as Ping Pong Diplomacy.- published: 28 Feb 2014

U.S.–China Cultural Exchanges
As an accomplished journalist and long-time China scholar, Orville Schell has been an important voice in U.S.–China relations for more than 40 years. In a career that spans 14 books – nine of them about China – he has explored and documented the growing U.S.–China relationship. In November 2011, he organized the first U.S.–China Forum on the Arts and Culture and launched a series of cultural exchanges aimed at strengthening mutual understanding between Americans and Chinese. The Forum featured such leading figures in the arts as Yo-Yo Ma, Meryl Streep, Amy Tan, and many others who collaborated and performed with their Chinese artistic counterparts in Beijing. The ties between the U.S. and China grow closer every year, and such landmark events not only suggest a new direction for U.S.–China arts and cultural exchanges, but also illustrate how far we have come since the days of ping-pong diplomacy.
