Background: In July Japan joined negotiations for the Trans-Pacific Partnership or TPP. 12 countries hope to create a massive free trade zone with 40% of the world's economic output. The United States is taking the lead. It is pushing for elimination of tariffs. Debate is heating up in Japan. Japanese exporters support the TPP. They see a huge chance to expand in Asia's markets. But farmers and cattle ranchers feel a sense of crisis. They say removing tariffs will be a severe blow to their business. Only a small handful of Japan's farmers could survive. People elsewhere are worried to. Opposition is especially strong in emerging economies. And as advanced economies stagnate Asia's fast growing nations are pursuing their own trade zones.
