GIFF2014 Live Seminar: Focus Russia: A conversation on postcommunist Russian cinema
Postcommunist Russian cinema mixes genres and styles producing national epics, tearful melodramas, popular comedies with celebrated stars, as well as small-scale art films that provoke mainstream audiences. Historically, cinema is closely connected to the idea of Russia itself. With the rise of Vladimir Putin, Russian cinema has retained its former autocratic qualities. What, then, is the current climate for making films in Russia? The panel seeks to investigate this question by talking to five active filmmakers about the film industry, politics and issues of representation. Participants: Sergej Taramajev and Liubov Lvova ("Winter's Journey"), Taisia Igumentseva ("Bite the Dust") and Vitalij Manskij ("Pipeline") Moderator: Lars Kristensen, Ph. Pushing the Curtain Aside: Russian Cinema From the Past Two Decades
Pushing the Curtain Aside: Russian Cinema From the Past Two Decades
VANISHED EMPIRE Jan. 2nd 7:30 pm "Trapped by obligations to his pre-teen brother, archaeologist single mother, and aging grandfather, the illicit temptations of youth, and the social hypocrisy of life in a USSR fifteen years away from its own inevitable transformation, 18-year-old Sergey rebels by sidestepping responsibility altogether. Aided and enabled by the privileged, westernized diplomat's son Kostya and straight-laced schoolmate Styopa, Sergey pursues girls, vodka, pot, and Western rock and roll with equal abandon. But then the arrival of gorgeous, innocent Lyuda threatens to break Sergey out of his rootless cycle of teenage kicks, even as it tests his already tenuous connection to friends, family, past, and future." -- Kino Lorber THE RIDER NAMED DEATH Jan. 9th 7:30 pm "In the beginning of the 20th century, Russia was shocked by a series of cold-blooded murders. These killings were carried out by the "fighting organization," a socialist revolutionary group that directed acts of terrorism against various high officials of the state in different cities. The group is headed by Georges and includes bomb maker Erne, who is devoted to him, and bomb throwers Vanya, Henry and Fyodor. As they try to achieve their main objective -- the murder of Grand Duke Sergey Aleksandrovich -- the story reveals their feelings and aspirations. They are terrorists for a variety of reasons: for love, revenge, principles and a belief in a better future. As their attempts on the Grand Duke's life fall short, members of the organization disappear. Georges suddenly realizes that he would do anything to kill the Duke." -- Kino Lorber THE RETURN Jan. 16th 7:30 pm "In contemporary Russia young brothers Vanya and Andrey have grown a deep attachment to each other to make up for their fatherless childhood. Running home after a fight with neighborhood kids the boys are shocked to discover their father has returned after a twelve-year absence. With their mother's uneasy blessing Vanya and Andrey set out on what they believe will be a fishing vacation with their taciturn father." Kino Lorber BROTHER Jan. 23rd 7:30 pm "Danila returns from army service to a St. Petersburg transformed into a casual culture high on music and consumerism. The chaotic atmosphere, carefully depicted by Balabanov's moody camerawork, easily invites the smug, belligerent Danila into a world of crime. Soon the youth is accompanying his brother Viktor, a contract killer for the Russian underworld, on violent escapades where wads of cash and a well-gripped gun are the ultimate symbols of power. Bodrov's cynical, brutal performance, reminiscent of tough-guy roles from countless Hollywood mob movies, further conveys the sense that the 1990s St. Petersburg is not a far cry from the blood-strewn Chicago of the late 1920s. And like Bogart and Cagney, Bodrov makes his morally challenged hero strangely likeable." -- Kino Lorber- published: 19 Dec 2013

2010 The Animation Workshop
My Bachelorfilm from The Animation Workshop. Set to the song "Slow Show" by The National, who were kind enough to allow me to use their music. It is a non-commercial short film, intended for festivals.
It is shot in the forests surrounding Viborg, Denmark. My main inspiration was victorian litterature, and "Boxer" by the national. It was painful to finish, as shooting stop motion in the forest at night for longer periods turned out to offer alot of problems :) But it was also great fun and adventure.
