Order Restored In Myanmar After Angry Buddhist Mob Attack
Police in Myanmar say they have restored order after a riot during which homes and shops, largely Muslim-owned, were burned to the ground in the country's northwest. Members of a 1,000-strong Buddhist mob torched dozens of homes and shops in Htan Gone, a village 16km south of Kantbalu town in Sagaing region, following rumours that a Muslim man tried to sexually assault a young woman, according to officials and witnesses. State television reported that about 42 houses and 15 shops were burned and destroyed in Saturday's incident, but no injuries were reported. The riot in Htangon, a village 16km south of Kantbalu town in Sagaing region, began after a crowd surrounded a police station, demanding that the suspect in the attempted assault be handed over, a police officer told the Associated Press news agency. Al Jazeera's Veronica Pedrosa, reporting from Bangkok in neighbouring Thailand, said this was part of a growing cycle of religious violence in Myanmar. "This falls into a pattern of violence against Muslims that's been happening for more than a year now," she said. "It seems to start with an isolated criminal act, which rumours say are perpetrated by a Muslim, but then there is mob violence as a consequence. "These thousand people were carrying swords and spears and singing the national anthem as they moved." The predominantly Buddhist nation of 60 million has been grappling with communal violence since the country's military rulers handed over power to a nominally civilian government in 2011. The unrest, which has killed more than 250 people and left 140,000 others displaced, began last year in the western state of Rakhine, where nationalist Buddhists accuse the Rohingya Muslim community of illegally entering the country and encroaching on their land. The violence, on a smaller scale but still deadly, spread earlier this year to other parts of the country, heightening deep-seeded prejudices against the Muslim minority and threatening Myanmar's fragile transition to democracy.- published: 26 Aug 2013

Tensions flared in the northern Sagaing region after a Muslim man was detained by police and accused of raping a Buddhist woman. Police arrested 12 people for taking part in the riot. Muslim farmer Win Naing whose house was destroyed said: "It would make sense if they (the rioters) did this to the person responsible for the crime. We don't know who did it, but this happened to us." Tens of thousands of people have been displaced since fighting broke out between Muslim Rohingya and Buddhist Rakhine in Myanmar last year. BBC NEWS Anti-Muslim monk stokes Burmese religious tensions
This week, religious violence has once again flared in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Hundreds of Muslim homes have been burnt to the ground in Sagaing region after being attacked by Buddhist mobs. In just over a year more than 200 people, mostly Muslims, have been killed and many more displaced as unrest has spread from Rakhine state in the west to towns across the country. Many are blaming a controversial monk and the nationalist organisation he helps lead for the rising tensions. In a classroom at one of Mandalay's most famous monasteries, a teacher is at work. 12 People Arrested After Religious Violence In Myanmar
At least 12 people have been arrested after a renewed bout of religious violence in Myanmar's northern Sagaing region in which dozens of homes were set ablaze. The Ministry of Information said the sectarian unrest in a central village of Kanbalu followed the attempted rape of a Buddhist woman by a Muslim man on Saturday evening. According to the statement, after the man was detained, about 150 villagers and three Buddhist monks gathered at the police station, demanding he be handed over to them. When the police refused, the mob rioted, destroying Muslim bulildings, throwing rocks at police and attacking firemen About 1,000 Buddhists, some carrying sticks and swords, attacked Muslim villagers the same night, destroying more than 40 homes and shops, witnesses said. Calm was restored on Sunday. Witnesses said some Muslims fled to neighbouring villages or sheltered in a Muslim school. A Muslim eyewitness said the cause of the unrest appeared to have been an argument between a young Muslim man and a Buddhist woman, but he denied the man attempted to rape the woman. Myanmar has been grappling with sectarian violence since the country's military rulers handed over power to a nominally civilian government in 2011. The unrest began last year in the western state of Rakhine, where Buddhists accuse the Rohingya Muslim community of illegally entering the country and encroaching on their land. Last week watchdog Physicians for Human Rights said Myanmar risked "catastrophic" levels of conflict with "potential crimes against humanity and/or genocide" if authorities failed to stem anti-Muslim hate speech and a culture of impunity around the clashes. Rights groups have accused authorities of being unable or unwilling to contain the unrest, which has left about 250 people dead and more than 140,000 homeless. The vast majority of victims have been Muslim, who make up at least four percent of the population. Myanmar has rejected the claims.- published: 25 Aug 2013

This week, religious violence has once again flared in Myanmar, formerly known as Burma. Shin Wirathu is taking a class of young monks at Masoeyin through the five precepts or pillars of the Buddhist faith. This morning, he is lecturing on the importance of avoiding sexual misconduct. "Yes venerable monk," the young men chant in unison, as Wirathu softly delivers his advice on the need to avoid temptation. Monk Kaylar Sa said the 969 movement was unnecessary When the class is over, he shows me outside. On the wall of the monastery courtyard are graphic posters of the Buddhist victims of recent religious and ethnic violence in Rakhine state in western Myanmar. They are unpleasant viewing. The pictures from October last year show dead children with their heads cut open and the bodies of women with their internal organs spilling out of their torsos. Wirathu said he put them up as a reminder to Buddhists that the country is under attack from Muslim "invaders". "Muslims are only well behaved when they are weak, " he said. "When they become strong, they are like a wolf or a jackal, in large packs they hunt down other animals." Wirathu believes there is a Muslim "master plan" underway to turn Myanmar into an Islamic state. If he is right, it is a long-term project. Latest estimates suggest that of Myanmar's 60 million people, 90% are Buddhist and about 5% Muslim. "Over the past 50 years, we have shopped at Muslim shops and then they became richer and wealthier than us and can buy and marry our girls," Wirathu said. "In this way, they have destroyed and penetrated not only our nation but also our religion."- published: 29 Aug 2013
