SAIIA podcast 16: Swaziland, Southern Africa's Forgotten Crisis
SAIIA looks at the upcoming national elections in the Kingdom of Swaziland. The first round of elections began against the backdrop of continuing economic difficulties in Swaziland. The final round of parliamentary elections will take place on 20 September 2013 and King Mswati III, Africa's last absolute monarch, will subsequently appoint a new government. We speak with Alex Vines, Head of the Africa Programme at Chatham House. He and his colleagues have just released a report on the political and economic landscape in Swaziland, based on their recent field work there. We ask him: 1) Your report is entitled: "Swaziland: Southern Africa's Forgotten Crisis." Why a crisis? 2) You say the situation is unsustainable. I presume you mean in part economically. Can you elaborate? 3) King Mswati III's recently talked about his country being a "monarchical democracy"? What did he mean? 4) Parliamentary elections are due to take place on the 20th of September. What can we expect from the ballot? 5) What can South Africa and the international community at large do to improve the governance situation in Swaziland? 6) In the report you say that Swaziland might have much to learn from Bhutan and Nepal. Can you tell us why? This is number 16 in a series of video interviews by the South African Institute of International Affairs (SAIIA). Adapting to climate change in Eastern and Southern Africa
Adapting to climate change in Eastern and Southern Africa
In Africa, millions will suffer from climate change impacts on agriculture, water availability, ecosystem services and biodiversity. It's urgent for countries in the region to take action to reduce vulnerability and enhance local communities' capacity to adapt. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (or IUCN) has been working with three countries to do just that. In Mozambique, Tanzania and Zambia, IUCN staff members have been collaborating with national governments, local NGOs and selected communities on a pilot project, funded by the government of Finland, called the « Climate Change and Development project », or CCDP. The project was developed with the aim of ensuring that policies and strategies lead to activities that emphasize the role of water and forests in adapting to climate change in the region.- published: 13 Jan 2012

FAO - Building Resilience in Rural Communities in Southern Africa
FAO - Building Resilience in Rural Communities in Southern Africa
This video shows some of the activities that FAO is implementing in the field to support rural communities in areas that are periodically affected by natural hazards in Southern Africa, mainly droughts, floods and cyclones. While these natural hazards will happen again in the future, and, as a result of climate change, we may expect to have more meteorological hazards in the future, there are many simple and effective things that can be done to increase the resilience of rural communities. This video reviews some of the successful experiences that have been implemented in the field by FAO and its partners in several technical aspects that are key for an increased resilience of small farmers in agriculture and food security. Amongst these activities, this video highlights the importance of good practices such as adapted agronomic techniques, improved seed varieties, promotion of farmer's associations and small scale irrigation. © FAO: http://www.fao.org- published: 02 Oct 2013
