Kinetic art is art that contains moving parts or depends on motion for its effect. The moving parts are generally powered by wind, a motor or the observer. Kinetic art encompasses a wide variety of overlapping techniques and styles.

Kinetic sculptures are examples of kinetic art in the form of sculpture or three dimensions. In common with other types of kinetic art, kinetic sculptures have parts that move or that are in motion. Sound sculpture can also, in some cases, be considered kinetic sculpture. The motion of the work can be provided in many ways: mechanically through electricity, steam or clockwork; by utilizing natural phenomena such as wind or wave power; or by relying on the spectator to provide the motion, by doing something such as cranking a handle.

Bicycle Wheel (1913) by Marcel Duchamp, is said to be the first kinetic sculpture. Besides being an example of kinetic art it is also an example of a readymade, a type of art of which Marcel Duchamp made a number of varieties throughout his life. In Moscow in 1920, kinetic art was recorded by the sculptors Naum Gabo and Antoine Pevsner in their Realist Manifesto, issued as part of a manifesto of constructivism.

Anthony "Tony" Howell (born 1971 in the Lake District) is an English actor, best known for his starring role as Sgt. Paul Milner in the British TV series Foyle's War.

Howell trained to be an actor at the Drama Centre, and his acting debut came when on a world tour with Robert Lepage's Geometry of Miracles. He subsequently starred in Wives and Daughters (1999) before taking a year out to appear in the 1999-2000 Royal Shakespeare Company season in Stratford-Upon-Avon, where he took major roles in the three main plays of that season: Orlando in As You Like It, Benvolio in Romeo and Juliet and Antipholous of Ephesus in The Comedy of Errors.

In 2005, Howell starred in Agatha Christie's And Then There Were None in London's West End. He played the lead in the first stage adaptation of John Fowles's The French Lieutenant's Woman which toured the UK in 2006. In 2008, Anthony Howell appeared in the Primavera production of Jingo: A Farce of War by Charles Wood at London's Finborough Theatre, then toured with the Peter Hall company in Ibsen's Portrait of a Lady and A Doll's House. In 2010, he played a minor role as Gordon Way in the BBC TV adaptation of Dirk Gently (which was loosely based upon the books by Douglas Adams).

Arthur Ganson is a renowned kinetic sculptor. He makes mechanical art demonstrations and Rube Goldberg machines with existential themes. His moving sculptures have been exhibited at a number of science museums and art galleries. Ganson's work appeals to viewers of all ages, and has been featured in an animated children's television show. He has invented mass-produced children's toys, and hosts an annual competition to make Rube Goldberg chain reaction machines.

Ganson was an artist-in-residence at the Mechanical Engineering department of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology from 1995–1999. In addition, he has given invited presentations about his work at the TED conference, and at the Long Now Foundation.

Ganson was born in Hartford, Connecticut in 1955. He has an older sister, Ellen Ford and a younger brother, Richard Ganson. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the University of New Hampshire in 1978.

Ganson describes his work as a cross between mechanical engineering and choreography. His sculptures have been called "gestural, humorous, evocative, and introspective", or "Ingenious. Philosophical. Witty".
