Cuban government's control of the economy, and its impact on self-employment in Cuba
Cuban government's control of the economy, and its impact on self-employment in Cuba
Self-employed, in Cuba. http://www.HavanaSpring.com The Story of Free Cuba powered by WebStringers [00:00:06,367] The existence of the private sector in Cuba comes along with the mistrust of authorities towards free enterprise. This is stated by a self-employer from the island that complains about the State preventing hiring his services. The private sector, called in our country self-employment, is a solution to pair the downsizing policy made by the State. Many people complain that government entities do not trust, or are afraid to hire private employees to do capital works. [00:00:45,226] -It is stipulated, we self-employed can work and provide our services to State institutions. When TCP work is written in the political party ordinance. It is a tentative work. But that does not mean it is not a state sector. [00:01:08,443] -Everyone knows that State companies, without underestimating anyone, most of them, do not work out. Because the salary is extremely low, or not satisfying enough, as a reward for what they are doing. And then the robbery, the amortization. If you are not going to hire TCP as State enterprises, please say so. [00:01:33,454] -There are over 80 bathrooms in city of Havana, in schools, that could not be repaired. This has nothing to do with Women in White, nor whatshisname, nor anybody. I am a revolutionary man. What I feel is a huge pain, because I've always lived out of my work. It is a job to bring a decent meal to the table. And if not, give me an answer. Look, let's talk, this is not like that. That's it. I will manage. [00:01:59,761] The truth is that in a country like ours, still developing, the lack of awareness and authority as a habit from many years of centralized economy, are causing serious problems to native individuals who wish to develop their business under the system of self-employment. Specially when there is so much need, in the construction industry, where schools and hospitals, just to give some examples, demand skilled workers, whether from the State or self-employed. Duke Riley--Trading with the Enemy PREVIEW
See You at the Finish Line, Featuring 'TRADING WITH THE ENEMY' opens at Magnan Metz Gallery on Friday, November 1, 2013 from 6-8pm. The show runs through January 11th, 2014.
The smuggling of illicit cargo and people has played a significant role in shaping the culture as well as the economy of the Southernmost American city of Key West since it’s foundation in 1821.
Previous to the embargo, a myriad of boats made the crossing regularly between Key West and its sister city of Havana. In the early days, it was commonplace for ship captains to keep homing pigeons aboard to relay messages of either safe arrival or distress back to several lofts positioned in Key West, including the Pan Am headquarters, Key West Lighthouse and the US Naval Base.
Despite no hostile actions, Cuba remains the only nation against which the United States upholds the Trading with the Enemy Act. Today, millions of dollars are spent annually on a dual Lockheed Martin 275K aerostat surveillance balloon system and high-speed Department of Homeland Security vessels canvasing the Florida Straight and the waters surrounding Key West.
I spent 4 years planning and eight months breeding and homing a kit of fifty pigeons to a loft I built in Key West. My goal was to prove that pigeons could make the 90-mile flight from Havana back to Key West carrying highly coveted contraband Cuban Cohiba cigars. Eleven returned.

Havana Homegrown: Inside Cuba's Urban Agriculture Revolution
Cuba is not only an island nation in terms of its geography, but also its economy and politics as a result of the US embargo and the fall of the Soviet Union, Cuba's largest source of trade and aid until the Berlin Wall fell in 1991. Cut off from the world's pipeline of food, oil, chemical pesticides and fertilizers, Cuba embarked upon an ambitious program to grow as much of its own organic food as possible in the 1990s during what was known as the "special period."
This short video produced by the nonprofit group Kitchen Gardeners International (KGI) peeks into Havana's urban farms and gardens to see what lessons they have to offer other cities working to move toward sustainable food security.
For more information on other homegrown solutions around the world, please see KGI's website here: http://kitchengardeners.org

Entre Luz y Sol [short documentary] 2005
Clorinda Andrade and Kevin Lopez, graduate students from the University at Buffalo, traveled to the Caribbean island of Cuba to explore one of its most apparent paradoxes, its tourism industry. Having traveled through the island for a month, both captured a more personal side of Cuba that many are never exposed to, a view of the country where Cubans are able to speak for themselves.
After the collapse of the Soviet Union, Cuba faced one of the worst economic crises of its history, known as the Special Period. As a result, the government was forced to restructure its tourism sector, which has become the most sustainable economic resource for the country.
Today, Cuba is prepared to receive up to fifteen million tourists per year. Tourism has become the most important sector of the Cuban economy, and researchers predict that once it opens up to the U.S., one million visitors will arrive to the island.
This film, which was partly funded by the Miramax Minority Scholarship Fund, explores the current social effects of tourism on Cuban society.
