Watch the whole series at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0BP9afJLoKY&list;=PL2asu6bhj2yv1ExX4yI_bor98hfi6lvmo http://grinningstudio.blogspot.com The blog. https://twitter.com/GrinningStudio Follow me on twitter. https://www.facebook.com/GrinningStudio Follow me on Facebook. In this Segment: There are 8 main temples. Three halls are for chanting Buddhist sutras and studying philosophy. The temple of "Mamba" is a school of holistic Tibetan medicine. At the temple of "Juhd" we learn about the source and manifestations of evil. The temple of "Duinhar" is where meditation and Buddhist rituals are taught. Things learned there are practiced in the temple of "Jogchin." This is where most Buddhist ceremonies are held. There is another small temple that houses a 20 meter statue of "Jenresig". "Jenresig" is a Bodhisattva of compassion. Gandan-Tegchilen Monastery has more than 500 lamas. Jenresig is considered to be the most compassionate and merciful of all Buddhas. The statue is of Jenresig standing upright. He has 4 hands holding different items. One hand has a mirror so that he can see everyone's sorrow and suffering. Another has a vase of holy water so he can wash away people's pain and sorrow. The other hands hold a ball which represents the "Dharma," or Buddhist doctrine. The ball is being offered to people in order to help them understand and follow Buddhism. Sometimes one of the hands holds a bow and arrow. This is so he can reach everyone and hit their suffering without failure. The statue was built in 1910 or '11 by an order from 8th Bogd Khan "Javzandamba" to symbolize Mongolian independence after 300 years of Manchurian tyranny. It also symbolizes a plea for peace and an end of suffering. The height of 20 meters equals 80 lengths of Bogd Khan "Javzandamba`s" hands. In 1937 during the rule of the Communists the statue was taken from us. It was brought to Russia where it vanished. The small temple where it stood was closed. Nobody really knows where it ended up or what happened to it. After the arrival of democracy in the 1990`s... To mark our independence and new found freedom... Mongolians requested that the Statue of "Jenresig" be rebuilt. Therefore a new statue was commissioned and completed in 1997. To awaken the statue, many holy items were needed. These were placed inside the base of the statue. Soils, stones, incense sticks and junipers were collected from every corner of Mongolia. We told the 14th Dalai Lama who gladly sent holy items such as clothes and relics that had belonged to previous Dalai Lamas. This was important because the Dalai Lama is a reincarnation of "Jenresig." A great ceremony was held to give life to the statue. Tibetan Buddhism was brought to Mongolia by a Khan named Altan in 1547-48... After he met with a previous Dalai Lama in Tibet named "Sonan Gyatso". It is said that the Altan Khan created the title "Dalai Lama". The Khan was so impressed and inspired that he called the Tibetan Lama an "Ocean of Wisdom." Since then, all the spiritual leaders of Tibet have held the title of "Dalai Lama". Other Khans that followed became believers and Tibetan Buddhism was spread throughout the Empire.
