He was speaking after he vetoed last-minute attempts by the European Union to rescue an agreement that would have signalled a historic shift away from Russia. The president expanded on comments made on his website, where he said several crucial steps needed to be made before the country was ready to enter into an association accord. "There is no change to our plans. We think (we can sign) once we get down to work and find solutions for economic problems, when we get the opportunity to sign a strategic partnership agreement with Russia and everything else that we need to do, so that normal relations can be established between the European Union, Russia, and Ukraine... this is our responsibility," he told reporters. Ukraine's Klitschko Demands Yanukovich Resignation
Ukrainian boxer and opposition leader Vitaly Klitschko addresses protesters in Kiev's Independence Square and demands the resignation of President Viktor Yanukovich. Full Story: Ukraine's opposition leaders on Wednesday (December 11) reiterated calls for President Viktor Yanukovich to resign, the morning after large groups of riot police cleared streets near an anti-government protest camp in Kiev's Independence Square. The overnight moves by hundreds of black-clad police with visors and helmets were the biggest step the authorities have taken so far to bring to an end weeks of protests against President Viktor Yanukovich. At the main protest camp on Independence Square, pop stars, politicians and priests pleaded with police not to shed blood. Opposition politicians called for mass demonstrations to protect the square and predicted that Yanukovich would soon be toppled.

Barroso to Yanukovich: There will be consequences if violence does not stop in Ukraine
As the situation in Ukraine evolves toward civil war, Commission President José Manuel Barroso proposed on Thursday to send the EU's top diplomats to Kyiv to help dialogue and calm down the situation. Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovich reportedly accepted the mediation and assured Barroso that he didn't foresee to install a state of emergency in Ukraine. Asked if the EU was already discussed sanctions against Ukraine leaders or was coordinating its action with the USA who already imposed visa sanctions on some officials, Commission spokesperson Olivier Bailly avoided a direct answer, saying that for the time being Brussels wanted to give chance to the political dialogue, but if the violence continued, the EU would examine the "possible consequences" for Ukraine.- published: 23 Jan 2014

Elsewhere in the city, the violence continued as police moved in to take down barricades in a street leading to government offices. Opposition leaders accuse the government of paying thugs to turn the protests violent and provide an excuse for a state of emergency. Protesters rounded up some of those accused of carrying weapons and trying to instigate violence, making them do a 'walk of shame' through the city's Independence Square. One anti-government protester said: "We don't want any war or any radical actions, but our government forces us, it is against the Ukrainian people. All my friends and family support the protest, no one wants victims." On Wednesday new legislation banning peaceful protests and slander of government officials comes into force.
